Big Picture: Ranger Ready
Department of Defense. Department of the Army. Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. U.S. Army Audiovisual Center. (ca. 1974 - 05/15/1984). For this issue of THE BIG PICTURE our camera crews have journeyed into the mountains of North Georgia and the swamps of Florida in order to bring the story of the U.S. Army Rangers to the television screens of America. The Rangers are a proud corps of elite combat-ready troops who undergo the most rugged training in the Army. The first Ranger unit dates back almost 200 years ago when the original thirteen colonies were under British rule. They served with General Washington's Colonial troops and they were active in Europe and the Pacific during World War II. When the Communist aggressors struck in Korea, the call for the Rangers sounded again. This BIG PICTURE episode concentrates on their training as it is practiced today.

One thing that was cool, was seeing the previous names and dates of those attending Ranger School carved in the cabins at Dahlonega, GA (mountain phase) - RLTW-ATW B-Co 2/75 Ranger Class 11/75

It was really interesting to see the "old school" when we filmed in B&W. I went in 1983. As I was watching this, I thought how bad the tactics were and how our Rangers are much better and clearly our school was tougher. Then I saw they did a 50 mile movement to Raid. Aye Carumba! Ranger schools appears to suck much more today and perhaps the training is even harder, but I have to say that the men from that era certainly appeared to be a different breed (in a respectable way). Also, they had phased out puppies by the time I went to Ranger School.

@@The508ranger Did you do some time in 3/75? I see the 3rd Batt diamond in your user name. I was in Cco 509th Pathfinders, Bco & HHC 1/75, and LRSD 101st. While in the Pathfinders we got a couple guys from the '08 when they were in Panama. Wish I could remember their names but I probably shouldn't post them without premission if I did.

An unapologetic propaganda film, and whilst every nation on earth would say that there military is the best, that can only be determined through combat, an event we all hope never happens again, but human nature being what it is, I am not holding my breath on that one. When it comes to special forces, of which the Rangers are part of the best in the world is the SAS (Special Air Service) and the SBS (Special Boat Service), but I am sure others will have their own opinion on that matter. Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative film, seeing the training methods of the era, but I would imagine that they are very different today, and that some are direct descendants of those methods. 😀👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

This is Ranger School, not the 75th Ranger Regiment. The Tab is a school, the Scroll is a way of life. Ranger School falls under the Training and Doctrine Command. The 75th Ranger Regiment is part of JSOC. Joint Special Operations Command. Our (75th) chain of command goes from a Colonel straight to a Lieutenant General (3 Stars). Fmr- B Co. 3/75 88-92

This is false propaganda film. All the training in this video is a direct copy of the classic Commando course in Scotland. No mention in this video of the US Rangers which started in Achnacarry Scotland under the Commandos, the green berets. Not fort Benning. The 17th century Rangers are British. Rogers Queens Rangers. NOT US. Meanwhile WW2 US Rangers were created and trained in Achnacarry Scotland. The 1st and 29th Rangers were born in the UK using classic Commando skills as mentioned in this video. They use classic Commando skills trained under Lord Lovat. Then the 2nd and 5th US Rangers copied these skills in Tenassee etc. Direct copies of the Commandos. Very insincere propaganda video. Strange.
