I understand your point but at the end it's pretty easily explained imo. Firstly, dividing it would just take away the meaning even if it might be more fair. At the end of the day attackers are the ones who can make the difference by themselves. Defenders as players are rarely as good because no defender can do alone what a great attacker can do alone, it's much more about the collective and tactical setup than the individual. It's also why worse teams tend to focus on defending because you can compensate for a lack of quality in defense through tactics but you can rarely compensate for a lack of attacking quality

Now that we have both , the FIFA award perhaps should be best served as the award for the best player worldwide and maybe the Ballon d'Or should be awarded to the best European player (born in Europe or representing a European nation). Don't know if others here would agree with this..........
