I really love Prisoner of Azkaban especially all the moments between Harry and Lupin. The scene on the bridge when he tells Harry the story about James and Lily always puts a smile on my face. There’s a sense of melancholy throughout the entire film, which almost makes it feel too mature to be a kids movie at times and that’s what I appreciate about it.

I like that scene but despised one part of it. "You know the very first time I saw you, I recognized you. Not by your scar, but your eyes. They're your mother Lily's." The biggest issue with those lines is that even in the book, Lupin first saw Harry passed out. Meaning his eyes were closed. What, did he forget what his best friend James looked like? I mean throughout the first few movies, everyone that knew James would tell Harry "you look just like your father". He should've recognized Harry by his face, not eyes, since his eyes were closed. That's why my second favorite scene in that movie is Sirius on his knees, telling Harry "you look just like your father."

@@proudindian2945 Remus didn’t really even have much of a relationship with Lily in the books but in the movies clearly there was some form of a friendship there. So it’s a slight deviation from the source material but I don’t mind it tbh. I have no problem with that line personally.

@@krislyons2793 I think that line would've been even sweeter if Lupin had seen Harry's eyes first. Like Harry walking into the compartment and their eyes met and he'd know. But even in the books, there's no hint that Lupin knew Lily much. I mean we know Sirius would visit the Potters when they were in hiding, and Lily actually kept in touch with him (letter), but nothing with Lupin. I would've loved to see Lily and Lupin have this friendship we know they had but nothing. I have no issues with that bridge scene but it's just that line that always bothered me. Lol. That movie is definitely my favorite from the 8th.

@@korg47237 totally! I enjoyed Harry's conversation with Hermione in that scene. Plus the Expecto Patronum scene. People don't notice but if you pause at the correct time, as soon as he casts that spell, you see antlers horn

No one ever mentions the music in POA. It may be my favorite of John Williams’ scores. “Window To The Past” is such a nostalgic and beautiful piece of music that sums up the Marauders era characters perfectly.

I think that that comes right under the heading of what J was talking about with Prisoner of Azkaban being a great stand alone film and what Ben said about strange creative decisions. I agree that the music is gorgeous but it replaces the themes that Williams wrote for the first two films rather than adding new themes to the glossary. The theme that’s used predominantly in A Window to the Past is Lily and James’ Theme but there was already a family theme for the first two so there really wasn’t a need for the change. The original music from the first two films feels like magic is auditory form whereas the music from the third is simply beautiful, but no where near as magical.

@@Bslites I didn’t see Window To The Past as specifically Lily and James’ theme but rather all of the Marauders-era characters, and Harry’s connection to them. It’s completely separate to family theme you’re referring to. And yes Williams changes some things up but you kind of have to to some degree to keep things fresh. Just my personal opinion.

@@thecoolestguyinthecomments178 There is another musical idea that represents The Marauders which is derived from the original mischief motif from the first two films. Also if you look at, for instance, Indiana Jones or Star Wars you can see that Williams still uses themes written three or four decades ago, it isn't really his style to change things up like this. I think you have to look at Cuaron for the musical change rather than Williams. As I say, I adore the music in the third film but that on top of all the other filmmaking changes, like the costumes and the colour temperature etc I just find that the film is isolated from the rest of the series and the music is a big part of what Harry Potter is in my head.

@@Bslites Marauders weren’t even mentioned in the first two. It’s was a new theme and composers add new themes all the time, it’s not a huge deal.

Goblet hold a special place in my heart. My grandfather is in the “Trial of Karkaroff” scene. He’s the man who has white hair and shakes Dumbledores hand.

Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite by a long shot. The cinematography and style is amazing and its the essence of medieval fantasy.

I also really like how much of the classes we get to see in POA. Maybe that's just my preference though, the same way Ben and J like to watch Quidditch scenes

I love how unique the film is compared to the others in the series... The first 2 had all the magic but they were a bit too perfect... When i watched poa in high school it really felt like i was still in high school but doing magic instead it had a great atmosphere and genuine feel to it

Boyy, i have to disagree with ben here, "prisoner" is stunning, the visuals especially and i think the characters ben pointed out r only rlly there for 2 mins at max, so i dont rlly think that holds down the rest of the movie, and i love the harry and lupin relationship, and in conclusion, the dark theme is beautifully done by alfonso cuaron

As an adaptation of the books themselves, it's the worst adaptation of the material. But it also improves on a lot it was given by moving things around, adding something here and there, cutting certain things that should have been cut (like a lot of the long, singular character dialogues), etc. While there were some changes that should not have been made, there's a lot there that improved the world, and actually, I think, worked for the world

Yes! Also about the characters mostly wearing muggle clothes or just not wearing their robes- they are becoming teenagers so to me it makes sense they would want to dress a bit messier.

My biggest issue is actually with Half-Blood Prince - the entire Voldemort back story, missing any connection or understanding of the Horcruxes is such a loss to that film compared to the book. This is why it feels nothing really happens until dumbledore dies

Half-Blood Prince is my favourite book. I think the movie focused way too much on the romance and cut out so much of Tom Riddle flashbacks.

@@SENazo-co9pz i mean it's fine since even in the books it's relationship focused, but they just failed at it and made everything so awkward. And they add too much fillers that is not in the books and eats away the screen time that can be used on other things

The little battle between the Order of the Phoenix/DA vs the Death Eaters that break into the school is totally left out as well as Bills injury. We only see what the Death Eaters do and not any of the accomplishments of the kids in the fight and the danger of it.

And that in the first few scenes we are spoilt twice in the grand reveal that he is still alive and working for Voldemort. The final reveal in the book is so good, but in the movie we already knew that jnr was behind it all and as we hadn’t seen him in the graveyard he’d likely be at hogwarts somehow.

I did too. I was disappointed that the whole "Barty being confunded, killed, and transfigured into a bone" backstory was cut from the film. I thought that that story was interesting.

Also, I am annoyed that we never got one of the best scenes in the book. Crouch's insane ramblings/determined and frightened demeanor. It was so chilling and I would have loved to see it put to film

Goblet of Fire is unironically my favourite book and my favourite film in the series. The film understood that a book of that length could not be translated exactly into a single film. imo to do it justice, it would need 2 films. The script understood that all the superfluous extra mysteries had to be cut for time. It's why the Rita Skeeter subplot is gone, it's why Barty Crouch Jr being around isn't a surprise. The main mystery is still intact, which is what mattered. I would say its visually the best movie. It balances bright and warm scenes as well as it does the dark moments.

I totally understand the split between chamber and Azkaban but I think the No robes thing just shows that the students are comfortable at school now, and as a British person that’s legit how our uniforms look when we’re half way through the day rather than prim and proper first thing in the morning. The muggle clothing also makes sense to me as they wouldn’t need to wear uniform on weekends

Unpopular opinion but I LOVE Gambon as Dumbledore. While Richard Harris was the lovable grandfather, i would have never seen that interpretation as formidable against Voldemort later on. Dumbledore is a tortured man who needed to be weighed down not the jolly grandfather he pretends to be.

Dumbledore is supposed to be a lovable grandfather, with him suddenly appearing formidable being a huge shock to Harry. I have no doubt that Richard Harris could've pulled off the transition, but also have no issue with Gambon (besides the obvious directing issues).

Richard Harris was one of the greatest actors of his time, who was very good at tapping into darker and more intense characters throughout his career. There's no doubt in my mind who would have played that more formidable and complex side of Dumbledore perfectly.

The other thing that I don't think helped with acclimatising the audience to a new Dumbledore was the sudden shift in outfit; Richard Harris's Dumbeldore was very close to the book in that he wore very colourful, visually interesting outfits, whereas Michael Gambon wore a single shade of grey from head to foot. It's a very drastic shift to something that is, comparatively, very boring.

If you were to tell me Harris was the greatest wizard ever, I'd be like "Really? This guy?" If you told me Gambon was the greatest wizard ever, I'd believe you. I just don't buy Harris as a great wizard. I buy him as a mentor.

I honestly don't think any of the movies are "dreadful." Even the ones I dislike because of the creative choices or because of how much they changed from the book, none of them are technically poorly-made movies. The only one I think you could make the argument for is Crimes of Grindelwald because of how completely disjointed and overstuffed that film is.

I agree. The only genuinely bad film imo is Crimes of Grindelwald which actually has a messed up, bad, and very confusing plot and really weird character decisions. All the 8 Harry Potter films are genuinely good to masterpieces of movies. I can understand that book readers were disappointed with some of the movies cutting out important plot moments or changing stuff, but for the most part, all the movies flow really well and people understand the story, and it's honestly a miracle how good it turned out especially when they had 4 different directors, a new actor for Dumbledore, kids growing up, etc. The Wizarding World franchise has 1 of the best and most consistent film franchises of all time. Even the first Fantastic Beasts movie was good, but then Crimes of Grindelwald fell off a cliff and no one bothered to watch Secrets of Dumbldore which I heard wasn't that good either and didn't have Johnny Depp which many people were upset about. I'm very upset that they're rebooting it into a tv series and it's a really bad decision on their part. The cast was so iconic, perfect, irreplaceable, and generations of people grew up with them. Even if it's done somehow done well, most fans won't care because it's already been adapted well and was successful.

Fun fact: In the UK, during December every Harry Potter movie is played on TV in order which is one of the reasons why a lot of British Potter fans consider them ‘Christmas’ movies. I am one of those people.

The ‘grungy’ theme in the 3rd film is how I envisioned the whole series from the beginning. I was actually pretty taken aback by how shiny and pristine and sort of regal the first two films presented Hogwarts and the Wizarding World. I’m forever salty that they cut out all the Marauders stuff for no reason, yeah, but tonally it’s my favorite film.

The scene with Hermoine and Bellatrix where she's torturing Hermoine always gives me chills. It's so well done and exactly how I imagined it even though you don't get any descriptions about whats happening to Hermione in the books. The way Ron reacted though was off to me because he's distraught/desperate in the books screaming her name.

Basically everything dramatic in the books isn’t as dramatic in the movies, or else looks like a bunch of middle schoolers in a play just saying their lines to get through it in the movies

Bellatrix torturing Hermione is so disturbing, it may be the only moment that's better in the film than the book. Emma really sold it. Her screams sounded real

POA has always been my favorite book, and translated into my favorite movie. John William’s “Window to The Past” is my favorite score. Absolutely the tone/visual shift is jolting, but I think it worked

So glad to see POA is loved so much in the comments. The first time i saw it, it was a complete diversion from one and two. The score is absolutely stand-alone to all the other movies. And the first time they revealed Sirius in the screaming shack and the scene it follows, were legendary performances.

I think it's the best film in the Harry Potter series. I think it's also one of the worst adaptations of the Harry Potter books. Goblet is the worst adaptation, but Prisoner is second worst in that respect in my opinion.

While the actors do deserve some blame for bad decisions, it's important to remember that they do multiple takes of these scenes and it's the director who decides "yes that was good" or "no that was bad". It was Mike Newell that ultimately decided to have Michael Gambon be so angry during the movie, either by accepting that acting from Gambon, or even more likely by telling him to do that. I don't really like when people diss the actors for many things, and don't mention the role the director has as well. It's the director's job to make sure the scene plays out the right way, look at any behind the scenes footage and you'll see directors stopping mid-scene to give criticism "Do it again but more of this" type thing, and on and on. Even if it was bad acting from the actor without being instructed to act that way, the director still in the end said "yes, that's good, I like it", thus the director needs more blame than they tend to get in those types of decisions.

Thank you for saying what I've always said - Gambon didn't have full reign or made the final call, he was directed to do it that way. The script was written that way. I've always been in the minority in loving Gambon as Dumbledore but man, he gets way too much blame for that. Actors get input, they do not get final say or editing discretion.

Also MG is a better Dumbledore. RH only looks like Dumbledore but he is too feeble to actually do anything. Can you imagine him doing the scenes Michael had to do. The guy was too old when they cast him. Yes, Dumbledore is old but in the books he still has a youthful playfulness to him at times and still still strong. Richard Harris was very very old.

THANK YOU!!! Mike Newell made a lot of missteps with GOBLET OF FIRE, which was my favorite book, but least favorite film. Why did they hire a director who wasn't even a fan of the series? And don't get me started on the scene where Snape playfully abuses Ron and Harry for talking during study time. So off character!

They're ranking the movies but didnt mention anything that makes POA stand out. The amazing cinematography where the camera can pass through glass and mirrors. The addition of the clock tower to remind the viewers of time constantly. The chill of the dementors seen before the dementors show gives a great sense of worry to the viewers I'd get their positioning if they even mentioned the mauraders story being cut out but they just said, less robes more muggle clothes

Prisoner by far has the best and most interesting cinematography. It makes the first two movies almost look like filmed stage plays by comparison with how static they are. But, as an adaptation, it’s much less faithful and some of the choices are jarringly ill-fitting. I think J and Ben over-value fidelity in adaptation, which I also think leads them to praise Fantastic Beasts too highly because there is no adaptation-related frustrations

you’re 100% right about the animation for The Tale of the Three Brothers. it was done by swiss animator Ben Hibon in his very distinct art style - also used in Heavenly Sword, as well as a lot of independent works of his posted to various platforms online - and they pretty much just let him go wild. he was his own animation director, he came up with most of the concept art, and a lot of his art is very distinct like this. he’s one of my all time favorite animators so i’m glad people recognize his work from DHP1

Im still watching this so it might be edited, but... On the tanget of GoF, although a small thing something I truly wished they added was family day. It always warms my heart when Molly and Bill show up for Harry. It helps visualize that the Weasley family considers Harry one of their own

I feel like the reason 1 and 2 look lighter is because it's being viewed through the eyes of an 11/12 year old just learning a lot of the magic stuff all at once, but once he hits puberty it's a whole different feel, especially seeing that his life is almost constantly in danger. Some of the only times post movie 2 where it looks as light as it did was times when he was feeling great joy, such as flying on buckbeak.

I also came to this conclusion I just don't like that they made this creative decision lol I wish they kept the light and warm aesthetic through to Goblet of Fire then the change to a darker theme could reflect Voldemort's physical return and pending doom for the magical world🤷🏾‍♀️

I really don’t get your opinions on POA. I mean, sure the scene with the tree is a bit goofy. But goofy in exactly the same way 1 and 2 were whimsically goofy. For me POA is the exact right combination of whimsy and grittiness. Also it is just flat out the best movie visually. And the story was told beautifully. Lupin, Sirius, the dementors were all done perfectly. And Gambon as Dumbledore in 3 was actually quite good as well! (It was 4 where it went wrong.) Judging it as a movie it is a 9.5/10 for me. Judging it as an adaptation of the books it is still an 8/10. Sure, some things can be nitpicked, but the overall story was done justice and it was much more true to the story than basically all of the later movies.

THANK YOU ! I actually kind of checked out after their ranking for this movie because I feel the same way. As much as I most likely sat there and wondered about a few choices overall I felt like that movie was pretty much what I had read and even if I didn't read it its still fun to watch and it also just shows that okay were going to be veering away from light hearted and not too dangerous we are definitely starting to get into the big leagues. And honestly you don't even notice that they don't wear "muggle" clothes in the other movies which I swear they do in half blood tho...

I think the first two are by far the best. so colorful and saturated with color. It felt so cozy and magical. they are also super loyal to the books. My least favorite are the David yates ones they all look green. I get the story gets darker but we didn't need it to look green all the time

I will agree on the saturation being too much dull and greenish, i hate the half blood prince because of that, its unwatchable due to the tone of the film, In deathly hallows it does get sooo much dark that its hard to notice what is going on, the only film to balance this was order of the phoenix and prisoner of azkaban, they handled the tone so well, and order of the phoenix was made by David Yates, possibly his best film in the wizarding world

I think my biggest issues in Goblet of Fire is the Barty Crouch Jr. plot being changed so drastically, not including the dementor’s kiss before he could confess to Fudge, and the backlash that led to the ministry calling Harry a liar. The Crouch plot has so much more depth than was portrayed in the film, and the lack of setup for the ministry calling Harry a liar in Order of the Phoenix makes it feel clunky when we get to it.

Cutting out the mythology of the Marauders physically pained me when the movie first came out. They never even explained that James was also an animagus (and thus The significance of the stag patronus, or Snape's doe later on). And they never even explain that they were the ones to create the map!

I have to say Prisoner Of Azkaban is number one for me! I love how it combines darkness with a sense of whimsy. I love that it’s sort of cartoonish yet somehow gritty. For me that’s positive. I always found Harry Potter to be this perfect combination of silly, fun, and whimsical, with dark, gritty, and disturbing. The first two just seem soooo child friendly. I almost have a hard time believing anything truly dark happen in them. However the later films just seem so mature, adult, and sometime a bit boring. Prisoner takes elements of the books, and then makes perfect cinematic. (cinematic adjustments are not negatives to me they are positives) That’s just my opinion. I love whimsical darkness :)

4,5, and 6 do all of that just as good if not better than POA. That’s what I live as well. A balance between dark and whimsical, however, the time turner plot hole ruins the second half, and the contrast is too tonally inconsistent. Not to mention a handful of other plot holes and important things left out from the book

The correct "hatchet order" for Harry Potter is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. This order preserves the reveal of Snape in Deadly Hollows part 1, then continues with the momentum of the story through Deathly Hollows part 2, then you go back and get the story from the perspective of knowing that Snape was watching out for Harry.

Order is like my second favorite movie and like my 5th favorite book crazy how in the movie the capture the fact that Harry feels lonely and he comes around in the end to show that the love he has makes him different from Voldemort

It’s also the most visually beautiful looking movie I think. The color tones are awesome- it’s darker to reflect the tone of the movie, but the color still pops unlike Half Blood Prince and on where everything is gray and murky.

My favorite is POA. It was the 1st movie I saw when my daughter finally convinced me to watch a Harry Potter movie with her. At the time I hadn't read any of the books or seen any of the movies, and I really wasn't interested. Well needless to say after watching POA I have read and reread and watched and rewatched every Harry Potter movie. Every now then I always tease my daughter and ask her if she is happy that I finally convinced her to read/watch Harry Potter?? I guess one of the problems I have with the movies would be Order of the Phoenix and the fact that you never know that Ron and Hermonie are Prefects. I think that is such an awesome thing for Ron and there is no mention of it at all. I also wish that the final duel between Voldemort and Harry would have been more like the book. I think that the movie duel is anti-climatic.

Prisoner of Azkaban is the best. It brought the darkness, the violence, even the horror to Hogwarts, the children heroes prepare their steps to the maturity (partly insinuated in The Chamber...). It would change the saga forever. So sad Richard Harris wasn't alive to see it...

I wish you were right! I wish it had brought darkness and horror and maturity. My gripe with it is that it instead brought this weird Tim Burtonesque whimsy instead. It seemed to me like the one where they struggled the most with figuring out what their target age group was for viewership.

the change out of robes in poa is to make it feel more like a real school, and show the characters growing up and becoming more themselves, being most teens don’t wear uniform correctly anyway which makes it more believable

The one thing that bothered me through out the series of movies was how they used wands, as if they had a magic six-gun they were shooting rather than putting forth any kind of magical effort. The _Magic_ is supposed to generate from the _witch or wizard_ not from the wand. I always felt that a muggle should be able to pick up a wand and it is no more than a stick in their hands (probably the biggest problem I had with Fantastic Beasts... was the monkey shooting sparks from the wand).

It should have been the case that the voice changes with the body change, but things like accents not, so the one changing into someone who talks with an accent would have to learn to do that to be believable as that person, and for the whole concept to be logical at least.

In Chamber of Secrets, their voices didn't change, and in Deathly Hallows, their voices didn't change for the multiple Harrys or at the ministry -- but Barty Crouch Jr polyjuicing (yep, I'm using it as a verb) into Moody for an entire school year in Goblet of Fire just suddenly did get Moody's voice. That's the only one they got right compared to the books, and now it feels like cheating because it doesn't match what they did with other polyjuice scenes. Blah. I guess that's one of the downfalls of changing directors and screenwriters, etc.

I agree with you guys about the first two movies. They’re amazing because of how faithful they are to the books and how perfectly they translate the books to the movies. However, in a completely different vein, I’d rank PoA as equally good, but for a completely different reason (more like how all three lord of the rings movies are absolutely perfect because of the way they adapt the LOTR books)

The cinematic storytelling helped make this movie stand on its own in a way many of the other movies fell short of. 47:57 I have a sneaking suspicion "I've always wanted to use that spell" when she casts Piertotum Locomotor was because her contemporary actor Angela Lansbury famously cast the same enchantment 40 years earlier in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Angela also played a witch, and used her version (Substitutiary Locomotion) to defending children during an invasion.

My 2 main pet peeves with the movies are: 1) the exclusion of Percy in Goblet of Fire because Barty Crouch Sr was actually missing for a good part of the movie; and 2) the order of events in Order of the Phoenix..as well as the trip to St. Mungos. Overall tho, I can't rank each movie individually because I view it as a whole...at least the 1st 8 anyway. I imagined I may have felt different if I had read the books first, but I didn't read the series for the first time until after I watched all the movies. The books filled in the gaps and made the story whole for me.

And the scene where the burrow gets blown up???? Just why. It makes no sense at all why you would add that. A) protective enchantments? How did the death eaters get there. B) Why would they do that if they aren't either taking out order members or kidnapping Harry to take to Voldy.. it doesn't make any storytelling sense. C) why not just have the battle of the astronomy tower instead. That one scene completely ruins the movie in many ways

My favorite thing about the movies: The casting. It's so great! Alan as Snape, Maggie as McGonagall, Gary as Siruius. Aside from "Did you put your name..." I do like how Gambon showed other sides of Dumbledore, even if he was less approachable than Harris. My least favorite thing...how criminally underutilized all the Weasleys were, especially Ginny, Bill, and Charlie (where was he?). 😢

My biggest issue with all the movies is how many of the characters lost lines that got given to Hermione. At first it was mainly Ron's lines that I noticed got given to Hermione, but on my most recent reread of Philosopher's Stone I noticed Neville is the one to explain what a remembrall is, not Hermione.

Needlessly extending the first task, taking out the obstacles in the maze, cutting the amazing scene with the half sane Barty Crouch, the Quidditch World Cup, were all bad changes.

Ben prisoner is one of my favorites! I think the nostalgia for me is huge. My brother and I would rematch it over and over together because the first two just weren't as good to us.

I disagree with absolutely everything you guys said about PoA. It's my absolute favorite of the movies. Everything about it was perfect imo. I loved how relaxed the acting was. It was less clunky than SS and CoS. The music is top notch. Best musical score out of all of them. Cinematography out of this world. BUCKBEAK BLEW ME AWAY AND STILL DOES. I was so disappointed with CoS when it came out. I utterly despise that movie. So when PoA came out, I was in love again. So much so that I immediately bought the soundtrack after leaving the movie theater.

@Tyler Holt This is where we meet Sirius Black and learn about the Marauders. Harry gets the Marauders map in this book/movie and he uses it for the rest of the series. We are introduced to dementors, which become his biggest fear. Harry learns the patronus charm and uses it later in the series.

The Half Blood Prince is my favorite book, and leaving out Voldy memories and ruining Ginny and Harry lowers it to Poor for me, but the comedic scenes like the Felix scene and the Ron love potion scene bring up to an Acceptable.

Disagree pretty heavy with your guys thoughts on POA. I think the characters expressing themselves with their cloths makes a lot of sense, it would be boring if they were always in robes. Makes hogwarts feel more alive IMO, they're not always in class so it makes sense they're not always in robes

Muggle clothings are supposed to be unfamiliar in the Wizarding World. They may not be wearing school robes at all times but wizards and witches have different robes for different occasions even casual robes for day wear as established in the books. They are not ordinary teenagers. They are wizard teenagers so should be wearing teenager wizard robes like what Harry was wearing in the front cover of Deathly Hallows book by Scholastic edition. As it should be.

Mostly agree with the rankings other than HBP. For me cutting out the gaunts, how they handled Ginny and Harry as well as cutting out the battle of the astronomy tower was too much for me. I’d put it as barely acceptable

I rewatched it yesterday with a friend that doesn't like HP. It dawned on me, the movie is completely unwatchable if you haven't read the books. It's just a series of events that happen one after the other without any connecting plot. He was so confused the whole time, with random flashbacks that give no context at all, missing pieces. The whole movie just feels rushed through. It was legitimately a bad experience and a bad movie.

I really love hallows/1! It’s by far my favorite movie of the franchise. So much interaction of the trio, so much character development. And it perfectly captures the lack of a good plan and the necessity to just wait for the opportunity to do something.

Honestly POA is my favorite. Lupin and Sirius are probably my favorite in all of HP. It was nice to take a break from Voldy being #1 bady, it set the mood for the rest of the series, fully converting into a series to grow with the viewers etc. just a great movie. Also: to be honest, whenever I rewatch the series I tend to skip the first movie cause it’s way to childish and adds very little to the OVERALL story other than to give background.

yesssss the final duel with voldemort where he outright explains to him and everyone what happened and proves he isn't just going to win by accident, was crucial and absolutely should have been included in the film.

I feel like the directional shift of POA worked really well with the growth of the audience that grew up with HP By the time POA came out on screen, readers knew that the story was much darker than what the first 2 books portrayed

The only ranking that differed for me was POA. It will always hold the top spot for me because it was the one that got me into the series. I saw it at a friends house when it first came out and because I loved it so much I rented the first two movies the next day and started reading the books the following week. I’m sure if I started with the philosophers stone my opinion would be different but the music score is the best in POA as well. Buckbeak’s Flight…chills every time.

Prisoner of Azkaban has always been my favorite! It was refreshing to hear your opinions on it. I love how the logo starts to get more dark and decrepit as the characters age through the movies. Showing how life gets scarier and more serious as years past.

I think POA was the perfect coming of age movie - we see the kids becoming teenagers, developing their personalities (hence the muggle clothes when not in class), struggling with their identities and hormones. It's also the start of some pretty dark stuff, which I think is why Alfonso added in so many quirky, surreal moments, i.e. Tom, the shrunken head, the whomping willow dance. I really think it's a great bridge between the whimsical wizarding world and the darker side of it. Also the way he uses time to transition between scenes and iterate the importance of it leading up to the time turner is genius.

The Polyjuice-potion changes the voice of Barty Crouch Jr. in the movie, and he's the only one in the movies that has that happen to him. The movies couldn't even consistently alter the rules

I think they made that decision because (a) it was easier than dubbing Moody with a different actor for the entire film, and (b) the viewers would instantly have realised that Moody was Crouch. The sound of his voice would be a giveaway in a way that it is not when reading a novel.

I will never forgive the fifth movie for leaving out Harry's breakdown in Dumbledore's office. It is a STANDOUT MOMENT in the books, and a SHOCKING moment to see Harry just BREAK. But no in the movie we just get them CALMLY TALKING. And because of THAT, a loooooooot of people just think "oh haha Harry has teenage angst so SAAAD" like nooo this kid SUFFERS in the fifth book. And it came to a head. Not in the movie though. Nope. Thanks, I hate it. *Here's the moment I'm talking about for reference:* “Harry, suffering like this proves you are still a man! This pain is part of being human-” _“THEN-I-DON’T-WANT-TO-BE-HUMAN!”_ Harry roared, and he seized one of the delicate silver instruments from the spindle-legged table beside him and flung it across the room. It shattered into a hundred tiny pieces against the wall. Several of the pictures let out yells of anger and fright, and the portrait of Armando Dippet said, _“Really!”_ _“I DON’T CARE!”_ Harry yelled at them, snatching up the lunascope and throwing it into the fireplace. “I’VE HAD ENOUGH, I’VE SEEN ENOUGH, I WANT OUT, I WANT IT TO END, I DON’T CARE ANYMORE-” He seized the table on which the silver instrument had stood and threw that, too. It broke apart on the floor and the legs rolled in a hundred different directions. Yeah the movies do Harry really REALLY dirty in terms of his mental state. People all the time made fun of his "teenage angst" when in reality, if they read the BOOK, they'd understand this CHILD had a full on mental breakdown, WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE given he just watched his last tie to his mother and father be murdered before his eyes. Harry saying "I WANT IT TO END" is one of a few A FEW instances in the books where he wishes he were dead. The other being when he and Hermione visit his mother and father "But they were not living, thought Harry: They were gone. The empty words could not disguise the fact that his parents' moldering remains lay beneath snow and stone, indifferent, unknowing. And tears came before he could stop them, boiling hot then instantly freezing on his face, and what was the point in wiping them off or pretending? He let them fall, his lips pressed hard together, looking down at the thick snow hiding from his eyes the place where the last of Lily and James lay, bones now, surely, or dust, not knowing or caring that their living son stood so near, his heart still beating, alive because of their sacrifice and close to wishing, at this moment, that he was sleeping under the snow with them." Like....Jesus get this kid to therapy. And get him a hug too. The movies do nothing to portray just what he's going through mentally. And I hate it. I think it gets me so peeved because they put in OTHER not needed stuff, and fluff when like....yeah hello raw characters moments are what made the books so good. Not romance. Ugh.

They tried to make harry and Hermione almost perfect hero and heroines so they don't have breakdowns, whereas in the books they were flawed humans, not to mention what they did to Ron! People still like Ron from the movies only coz of Rupert.. I had to reply because this scene from the book is so important and one of my favourites to go back to.

I read the books 5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4. I found it amazing. There were so many things i wondered when reading the last 3 that had huge impact when i read the first 4, namely why harrys patronus was a stag. I had already watched the first few movies and loved them so knew the general story but i think the first 3 had a lot more omg moments reading them last that otherwise wouldnt have been so significant

One thing I really liked about about Phoenix is the forest scene when umbrige says "tell them I mean them no harm" and Harry just says " I'm sorry professor, I must not tell lies"

This was really fun for me to watch because my friends and I are in film school and we just did a Harry Potter marathon and our rankings were basically the opposite of y'alls. Prisoner is by far the best directed (and best scored!) film of the whole series. Alfonso's directing style is whimsical already, and having him direct a movie with magic was such a good idea. The first two films, while having good cinematography and scoring are really boring directing-wise, which is what made them be near the bottom of my list. I really appreciate that the cinematography of movies 3-8 doesn't shy away from the darker, more mature tones and themes that the later books have. It contributes to the idea of lost innocence and the characters all having to live through and deal with really traumatic events.

Yes, but the movie is “officially” titled “Sorcerer’s Stone” because it was produced by a U.S. studio. It’s technically reversed from the book. The book is titled “Philosopher’s” and was changed for the U.S. release. The movie is officially titled “Sorcerer’s” by WB and is changed for the overseas release. It’s like how, with Marvel, it’s titled “Avengers Assemble” in the UK, but the official title registered by the studio is “The Avengers”. It’s weird and pedantic, but that’s why they said that.

The movies hold such a special place in my heart. Even though I love the books I will always remember the feeling of watching the movies for the first time. It is engrained in my childhood. I feel that perfectly captured the tonal Change throughout each film . I love the feeling of loneliness and emptiness that you feel through the last half of the films.

The reason Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite is Cuaron's grungy yet whimsical interpretation. I suppose it depends on what you want from the movies. Some people want the book in visual form. I personally love seeing filmmakers add their own flare to a preexisting story. Also, I think the reason Bellatrix used Avada Kedavra on Sirius was to confirm to non-book reading audience members that he was dead. You can even see that the incantation was dubbed in in post. Also also, using the audiobook covers instead of movie posters for the tier list seems insane to me 😂😂😂

I think going into Prisoner of Azkaban without reading the books first is why it’s my favorite, I didn’t know about the whole time turner sequence so I thought the movie was about to end and then boom time heist! I was in awe how awesome it was. Plus it introduced Lupin who is one of my top 3 favorite characters for sure.

I understand your critique about the Muggle clothes but I totally disagree on that front. Here are my thoughts: This movie is a coming of age story for the characters, they were children in the first two films playing with forces out of their control; now they begin to understand the gravity of the situations they are involved in. They are more powerful and confident and this is reflected in their clothing. It's them taking control and wearing their own clothes, something that anybody who had a uniform throughout their school career would instantly relate to, as is the case throughout England. In terms of the realism of why they are in Muggle clothing sometimes, I think it makes sense from a practical perspective. Hogwarts is a boarding school, meaning students have a lot of downtime where they are technically not "in school" despite being physically "in the school". During these times, no kid would willingly still wear their school uniform. When they are in class, they are in uniform, either casually so or more smartly depending on the context. But they are in robes or some form of uniform. When they aren't in lessons or at official school event gatherings, they are in their causal regular clothes. This makes total sense and I can say from experience that the relatability factor shot through the roof for myself and all school kids in England as of this movie onwards because the kids in Hogwarts suddenly felt like they could really be us and that they were connected to our school experience... just with ghosts flying around. I could go on, but that's the gist of it for me.

Yes ! Them being in there "muggle" clothes definitely helped me to relate- Connect with them a lot more. Especially because you don't feel like okay this is the golden trio No they are just kids in school trying to figure things out as, I am sure, most kids who were watching at the same age at the time felt. I was definitely in middle school when I first watched this film and it was definitely at a time where I was trying to express myself through clothing its a very real thing. (call me biased but I will not tolerate any Prisoner of Azkaban slander 😂)

The first two movies are just sooo good with the warm, feel-good vibes going on. That's why they remain at the top of my comfort movies. But the third movie is my favourite. That comes down mainly to the amazing story of the third book and I loved it. But yeah, it got gloomier and darker all of a sudden and the warmth we felt in our characters was gone. Though, it works well surprisingly. It felt like the first two movies were mainly shot in the day and the third one shot at night, a comfortable quiet cool night. And I love the feels. From here on, we find the warmth rarely in the movies that followed - a little bit during the Yule ball scene in GoF. But otherwise, yes, I wonder how Columbus or Cuaron would've made the subsequent movies.

Halfblood Prince makes the biggest change in character which I think is unforgivable. In the book Harry gets accidentally stunned under the cloak and has to watch everything without acting. In the movies Snape shushes him and he stands there and watches like a coward. It fundamentally changes the character for me, no way does book Harry unstunned not rush to Dumbledors aid. Pretty much ruins the movies for me.

I absolutely HATED the Half-Blood Prince movie. It is my favorite book in the series and in my opinion, they totally ruined it. Too much relationship drama, not enough scenes from Voldemort’s past, no chemistry between Ginny and Harry, and that scene at the Burrow that WASN’T EVEN IN THE BOOK. To be honest, my favorite movie is Order of the Phoenix. The book was very clunky and had a lot of filler, and I think the movie did an outstanding job of condensing it and telling what needed to be told. And Imelda Staunton NAILS Umbridge. She doesn’t look like a toad as described in the book, but her sickening fake sweetness is spot on.

My top movie though is GoF, I just love faction based things and you get that with multiple schools competing (also why I was drawn to Game of Thrones). Also it really expanded the magical world beyond just Britain.

It's up to you to imagine how they look different, they're still the same characters. In the movies the voice dubbing was done to just make it less confusing. If you just watched Crabbe and Goyle do their thing it might've felt kinda off. The actors would've also had to really try and imitate Harry and Ron well for it to be good. Maybe it would've worked out, maybe not, who knows.

It’s hilarious that they mention starting with deathly hallows part 1, seeing it in theaters with a coworker of my moms, it was my first exposure to Harry Potter and I read every book afterwards
