In this video I will compare and contrast four of some of the most popular characters at one point tasked with succeeded the great heroes which came before them. Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, Son Gohan from Dragon Ball, Miles Morales from Marvel Comics, and Nightwing from DC Comics; who surpassed their mentors to the greatest degree?

Nightwing is the name of several superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The most prominent is Dick Grayson, who takes the name when he leaves his role as Batman's partner and sidekick Robin in his adulthood.
Although Nightwing is commonly associated with Batman, the title and concept have origins in classic Superman stories. The original Nightwing was an identity assumed by Superman when stranded on the Kryptonian city of Kandor with Jimmy Olsen. Drawing inspiration from Batman and Robin, the two protect Kandor as the superheroes Nightwing and Flamebird. Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths and Zero Hour: Crisis in Time! continuity reboots in 1985 and 1994, respectively, Nightwing was reimagined as a legendary vigilante from Krypton whose story inspires Dick Grayson's choice of name when he leaves behind his Robin identity.
The son of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padmé Amidala, Luke Skywalker was born along with his twin sister, Leia, in 19 BBY. As a result of Amidala's death and Anakin's fall to the dark side of the Force, the Skywalker children were separated and sent into hiding, with Leia adopted by the royal family of Alderaan while Luke was raised by his relatives on Tatooine. Longing for a life of adventure and purpose, Skywalker joined the Rebellion and began learning the ways of the Force under the guidance of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, whose first apprentice was Luke's own father. During the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY, Skywalker saved the Alliance from annihilation by destroying the Empire's planet-killing superweapon, the Death Star. He continued his training in the years that followed, determined to become a Jedi Knight like his father before him, and found a new mentor in Grand Master Yoda. After his master's death, Skywalker participated in the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, during which he confronted the Sith Lord Darth Vader, whom he learned was in fact his father, Anakin Skywalker. With Luke's help, Anakin returned to the light side of the Force by killing the Emperor and Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious at the cost of his own life, fulfilling his destiny as the Chosen One. Following the Battle of Endor, Skywalker trained his sister as a first Jedi apprentice on Ajan Kloss, but Leia ended her training after the birth of her son and seeing his death as a result of finishing her knighthood.
Son Gohan is a half-breed Saiyan and one of the most prominent characters in the Dragon Ball series. He is the elder son of the series' primary protagonist Goku and his wife Chi-Chi, the older brother of Goten, the husband of Videl and father to Pan. He is named after Goku's adoptive grandfather, Gohan.
Unlike his father, Gohan is a brilliant scholar and lacks a passion for fighting, preferring to do so only when his loved ones are threatened. Nevertheless, he spends much of his life participating in the defense of Earth, often helping to turn the tides when the dormant depths of his power are unleashed.
Spider-Man (Miles Morales), is a superhero and the second predominant Spider-Man to appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, created in 2011 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, along with input by Marvel's then-editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. Born as a modern reimagining of the popular character, Miles Morales debuted in Ultimate Comics: Fallout #4. Originally from the alternate Ultimate Marvel Universe Earth-1610 before being retconned to the main Marvel Universe Earth-616, he was bitten by a model spider that was specially and genetically engineered by Oscorp Industries biochemist, Dr. Conrad Marcus, who used the Oz Formula at the behest of Norman Osborn to create "enhanced spiders" in an attempt to duplicate the abilities of the original Spider-Man of the Earth-1610 Ultimate Universe.
The biracial teenage son of an African-American father and a Puerto Rican mother, Miles Morales is the second Spider-Man to appear in Ultimate Marvel, an imprint with a separate continuity from the mainstream Marvel Universe called the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610), first appearing in Ultimate Fallout #4 (August 2011), following the death of the Ultimate Peter Parker.[5] He was featured in the Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man comic book series, and after Marvel ended the Ultimate imprint in 2015, Miles was made a character in the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616).

@@Rengokuo4o6 He mentions it in the video. But he becomes a bridge between the younger and older generations of heroes. Additionally, he's a symbol of hope for people rather than fear. Nightwing is also able to form and hold down actual stable relationships like he does with Starfire and Barbara Gordon. Everyone respects him, heroes and villains alike. I mean, when he died in Injustice, all the Villains stopped fighting in order to clear the way and pay their respects. He's just a better person than Bruce and I think that's what it really comes down to. I can add some more stuff, but I recommend you watch Crisis's videos on him. He's better at explaining than I am.

@@Rengokuo4o6 Bruce himself admits he's not a good person. Whether this is true or not is up to interpretation, but to say that Grayson is a worse person than him is blasphemy. He is the "Heart" of the DC universe. He's also known as the "Multiversal Constant." Bruce puts a huge burden on the shoulders of all his progeny. It's been said that Dick is there to relieve that weight from them, as any older brother should. Bruce is not a very good father to them so Grayson is there to provide them with that familial love that they likely need. So yes, I very much believe that he is a better person than Bruce. But is Bruce a bad person? No. He took them in, helped them, and made them better. Dick himself has said that Bruce helped him get over his parents death, understood his pain like no one else did.

@@ftdaj i didn't say he is worse. The concept of Nightwing being a better person than Batman is just dumb in my opinion. They are both good guys. I know what Batman said and i don't care. Bruce doesn't like to keep more friends but Nightwing does. That doesn't make Nightwing a better person than Bruce at all. It just makes Bruce an introvert. Also Bruce not being a very good father is also bullshit. Let me guess because of Jason huh? Again Nightwing friendlier doesn't mean he is all of a sudden a better person. As for Nightwing being a symbol of hope, bruh i don't know what that means. Is Batman not a symbol of hope to gotham citizens? Flash a symbol of hope to central city? Superman to metropolis? I also feel like Bruce gets placed in more tough situations, like morally.

@@lokimiguel2452 Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order was destroyed in canon, but in Legends, he established an Order that was able to grow and flourish. His first Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 began with a dozen students, just like in canon, but it grew to at least 100 total Jedi over the next 15 years. Luke's descendants continued to lead the New Jedi Order for the next century until it was decimated by the One Sith, but even then the Order survived by having a secret backup temple. This is the complete opposite of Luke's story in canon, with his earlier death leaving it to Rey to finish what he started and left behind.

My vote keeps going back to Nightwing. He was the first sidekick and now he's pretty much the main character of the DC universe surpassing not just Batman but EVERYONE. It's kinda crazy if you think about it. No one else has that kind of resume.

@IceGodzilla619 Batman lost all of his money in the Joker War. Basically Joker stole all of it with the help of Black Mask and a guy called the Underbroker. He then used it to take over Gotham with his new sidekick Punchline. Batman, Robin, Red Hood and Harley had to work together with other Gotham heroes in order to take the city back, but Batman was left broke. He still has some assets due to Lucius Fox thinking ahead and he's able to pretend he's still rich but he's in a bad spot ATM. He's not Spidey obviously but he's still low on cash. Another recent storyline was City of Bane. Batman and Catwoman have been flirting since the 1940's and they were finally about to get married. But Bane tricked Catwoman into getting cold feet and she left Bruce at the altar. This led to Batman becoming isolated and then Bane took over the city and took Alfred hostage. If any hero went into Gotham he'd kill him. He was working with Batman's father from another universe as well. Long story short Robin (Damien) went into Gotham on Batman's command because he's likely the stealthiest and Bane snapped Alfred's neck. He's been dead ever since (last 4 years now). Alfred was secretly one of the richest people in the world due to him having a massive portfolio (he was like 80 so he'd probably invested in Apple, Google, Amazon, Netflix when they were startups). Long story short he skipped Bruce altogether and gave his entire fortune to his grandson Nightwing for his Will. Nightwing has Basically become a Multibillionaire version of Mr Beast for Bludhaven and is starting to expand as well. He's helping the homeless and poor during the day. Then beating up criminals at night. Sorry about the length bro. Anything else you were confused about lol?

I think Nightwing is a good successor but Luke was the only one (legends) that brought the Jedi order back to its peak and if not the greatest it’s ever been. Redefining what it was to be a Jedi and also becoming one of the strongest characters in verse.

Tbh, Jacen was an adult, an experienced jedi knight when he chose the dark side decade after he stopped being Luke's apprentice, it wasn't exactly Luke's fault. At the end Luke's Order survived, his students and students of his students succeeded just like Luke himself.

I mostly focused on everyone’s main canon; main point for Legends Luke is that he wasn’t perfect as many believe. Also, neither Yoda or Obi-Wan were Anakin’s master at the time of his fall; Luke fell into the same trap as his predecessors.

@@fdjtron1732 i think he has the potential to become the successor to the worlds greatest detective title but as batman definitely not there was a run where future tim became batman and traveled back in time, i don't remember everything but i know he was one of the worst batmans in terms of what it means to be batman, he started using the gun that killed bruce's parents and in general had a fucked up moral code, either way i like tim more as robin, while Nightwing is my fav character(in fiction) tim is my definitive robin mostly because he made the most of the role and made it really his, and like i said he has the potential to become the best detective (maybe he already is im not really keeping up with tim)

Miles and Nightwing are honestly the only ones who are tied for me. Gohan became his own person with his own scholarly goals and such, sure he was always there when the Earth needed help but he never always seeked to fight. And Luke became what Crisis described.

Legends Luke is one thing but I’ll never get over how Disney made Luke an even bigger failure of a Jedi than Obi-Wan and Yoda were with the sequels. Nightwing definitely wins this by default of fitting the “successor” mold more than anyone else here.

Agreed, Dick is a successor done right. Miles is honestly a joke. Lazy origin story, can't name a single villain that's originally his, and just poorly written. Insomniacs Spiderman-2 proved with a great budget comes terrible writing.

Miles honestly work better as a alternate Spider-Man instead of an successor as it feels as if he's building his own legacy and stories as a Spider completely void from Peter's presents. We still have yet to see what the future holds for him and I think that's for the best as he has long been out of Parker's shadow and has show time and time again to be doing pretty well within his own light as an Ultimate and Immortal Spider-Man.

I assessed the goals of their predecessors and determined if they either achieved the same level of accomplishments as them, or if they superseded those goals. Their predecessors’ objectives varied so it couldn’t be too specific.

Option 5) Solid Snake. Admittedly, the whole Venom Snake BS really cut into what he actually achieved, and Liquid Snake essentially let Solid win throughout most of the first game, and Ocelot essentially let him win throughout most of the fourth game... But damn it, he is still absolutely the worthy successor to both the Boss and Big Boss.

I noticed that you included him in the intro when just discussing successors but I wanna shout out Jaden Yuki or Judai from Yu-Gi-Oh GX. While not nearly iconic enough to warrant discussion in this video, I do think he's a very interesting and unique approach to a successor type character. Yugi Muto's whole journey throughout the original anime and manga was about both a coming of age story and a story of finding peace and closure at the same time, represented through both Yugi and Atem separately, which would culminate in the finale of the series with the ceremonial duel to close off the Pharoh's story and establishing Yugi as the true King of Games. While it's contentious if the Yugioh GX manga is canon to the original Yugioh Manga, the anime continuity continued with GX, with the first episode literally titled "The Next King of Games" or "The One Who Succeeds Yugi" quite literally setting up Jaden to become an even better duelist than Yugi Muto. We see his journey throughout the series, going from being unable to defeat someone like Zane (who's stated leagues below Yugi even after becoming Hell Kaiser) to being able to defeat someone considered in the Top 5 of the whole series by the creator of the game, to even surpassing that after a Duel with an obsessive Duel Monsters Spirit that served him in a previous life. By the 4th Season of GX, Jaden has surpassed Yugi already but at the cost of having any fun with Duel Monsters after the constant life and death situations he'd been thrust into. To solve this, the present day Yugi (who's implied to be retired by this point) meets with Jaden and uses some magic that he might've picked up from Atem to send Jaden into a mind constructed version of the past to duel against Yugi's prime self, when he had all 3 Egyptian gods and Atem by his side. This duel was meant to help Jaden reawaken his love for dueling and take away the pressure of losing, as losing had meant certain doom for him and his peers for so long. We don't know the conclusion to the Duel, as it's left ambiguous how many turns were left and who would've won but it's somewhat implied Jaden lost. However, I do think that him matching up to a version of Yugi that is far stronger than the one in the present of Yugioh GX, defeating several forces of evil that are trying to life wipe or take over the entire earth and conquering his own spirit similar to Yugi, at least puts him on the same league as the King of Games.

Really love the concept of this vid. My pick for potentially the best successor would come from the GOAT series of One Piece. The character I'm choosing would of course be Luffy. For those unaware his dream is to become Pirate King. Which is done by finding the treasure known as one piece which was hidden by the first/previous Pirate King Gol D. Roger. The title of pirate king is very subjective to the one chasing it. For Luffy it means being the most free person in the sea. By those that met Gol D Roger or were friends of his they often remark of the similarities both him & Luffy share. To add to this Luffy adopted brother Ace was Roger's biological son😅. To preference something first within Shonen Jump series the concept of the next generation carrying the torch to greater heights is a concurrent theme amongst many of their series. Back on topic the concept of Fate& Destiny has been played with & mentioned within the series various times. The question of if Luffy is going to be Pirate because if it's his destiny or simply because he coincidentally gets in & out of situations with a uncanny amounts of luck is also a theme that is running throughout the series. Luffy's own power is also an inherited will(not in the sense it controls his movements but moreso enhances who he already is) which also connects with the concept of being a successor to the Pirate King. Luffy himself makes it very clear that he doesn't want to be this hero figure thus leading the reader to believe he isn't gonna be Pirate King because of morality or idolization of Roger... But purely because it's his own chosen choices. Granted the Manga isn't done but Luffy may truly be the greatest Successor if I had to choose one..

Definitely Nightwing Nightwing as a character represents the idea of being a successor the most which is being yourself, its complex somewhat but overall simple, it goes from wanting to prove yourself on how you can stack up when in reality it takes time to realize that what you are doing is enough and you can improve on that eventually but it goes deeper than just being yourself as theres challenges and hardships that Nightwing and that even we go through But with Nightwing its not about becoming Batman that matters its becoming a hero that matters and thats why creating his own identity matters and has served an importance as much as anybody around him. Bruce and Dick has learned so much from each other that Dick being a successor is more than just living up to the role Bruce has but also making him the man he is today and vice versa. Nightwing a genuine character who kinda shows everyone that what we all do matters as much and our importance can be as big.

Luke Skywalker not only succeeded Obi-Wan but made up for his Failings and even redeemed Darth Vader ( A Bit ). He helped stop The Empire and inspired his Father to brake the chains of his Master and....give him The Shaft 😏 So i think Luke should at least be 2 or 1 here. Respect and keep up the epic work.

The only downside to Nightwing becoming the next batman is the fact that he doesnt want to do it. Every other is Bat family member - for their pros - are missing a certain quality that makes Batman who he is. Apart from that I think Terry would be the best for the mantle. Just forget the biological son part.
