I've been waiting for this show! Monster Magnet is an important and highly underrated band. Here is my list with a few comments. I don't think they have a weak album in their catalog. It's all great to me. I enjoy the lyric quotes. Dave's a one-of-a-kind writer. 1. Dopes to Infinity- I'm with both of you on the strength of the top of this album, but I see it as a four-track run including All Friends and Kingdom Come, which I view as a psychedelic masterpiece. The "I'm just not quite right today" vocal at the end has appeared in my dreams. 2. Powertrip- The title track is a great stick-it-to-the-man song. This album is crushing! 3. Superjudge- very close to Powertrip. 4. Spine of God 5. Last Patrol- my favorite later-period album 6. Monolithic Baby 7. 25 Tab 8. Four Way Diablo- there's some filler here, but the strong tracks hit me so hard. 9. Mindfucker 10. God Says No- There's something about the production of this album that disagrees with me. 11. Mastermind- I never quite connected with this album, though I do love individual songs.

Cobras & Fire and Dopes to Infinity are probably my top 2 i just enjoy them the attitude the feel of the music whatever influences they draw from meshes together well. The Atomic Bitchwax is a killer side project that didn't start as one but now has 3 of the band members.

I was ready to be on the defensive about my Number One rock hero, but seeing Luis Nasser on board, I was instantly reassured. Very insightful, and I agree that Townshend, even when he’s writing about himself, always makes sure he is also writing about us.

Great episode! Just like Pete, MM dropped off my radar for a bit, although Dopes always managed to get back into the rotation every once in a while over the years. Now after watching this, I want to go back and rediscover more of their music. I used to buy comics from Dave Wyndorf in the mid 80’s when he worked at small shop in the Red Bank Mini Mall. I would also see him at the local VFW comic shows in the area. He was always super nice and fun to chat with.

Have loved Magnet since hearing Twin Earth on Headbanger’s Ball in 1993 and have had the pleasure of seeing them seven times over the years, most recently in my home town Dublin and Belfast the night before - best though was playing Spine of God in its entirety and some of the Tab tracks in the wonderful venue AB in Brussels in 2012. I like this band a lot. The only thing negative that I can really say is that a few of these suffer from being too long. I did include the "Tab EP" since it's almost an hour long. Plus, it's so good!! 12) God Says No 11) Monolithic Baby! 10) 4-Way Diablo 9) Last Patrol 8) Mindfucker 7) A Better Dystopia 6) Superjudge 5) Spine of God 4) Mastermind 3) Tab 2) Powertrip 1) Dopes to Infinity ("Negasonic..." could play on a loop for 24 hours and I'd still want to hear it more) I really don't ever listen to my #11 & 12, but other than that I can put any of these on and have a great time.

Hi Pete & Jamie. Long time viewer, first time commentator. Really enjoyed the vid. Love Monster Magnet to death. Fortunate to see them live back in ’93 on the Superjudge tour in a small venue in Camden, London. Crazy loud. Dave Wyndorf spent most of the gig being physically propped up by the audience. In between songs he declared that “All I can see is a big fucking cyclops eye staring back at me.” Of course there was no cyclops in the room, but I have no doubt that Dave could see one. Great memories indeed.

Been waiting on this ranking for a while. Worth the wait. Great show. Jamie’s enthusiasm for this band was cool. Must say no bad albums at all and my ranking could change any day. Already have changed things around several times but for today here it is #11- Tab 25 #10- Last Patrol #9- God Says No #8- Superjudge #7- Mindfucker #6- Mastermind #5- 4-Way Diablo #4- Monolithic #3- Spine of God #2- Dopes to Infinity #1- Powertrip Dopes was my introduction to the band and was hooked. The only reason I I have Powertrip #1 over Dopes is Dopes just runs a little long at the end. Take off a song or 2 and it would probably be #1. Still could be to be honestly because there are some real kick ass songs on this. Like I said this is a hard ranking, no stinkers at all in this catalog. Great show

Fun band - there's a kinda music-biz bs vibe around Wyndorf (similar to Al Jourgensen or Perry Farrell), but you can tell he LOVES his 70s rock and he was very ahead of the curve w/ the tongue in cheek, retro-rockin' irony-tinged vibe. Dude wanted to be a rock star and managed it by Power Trip (which gets a bit too late 90s insincere irony-tinged for me to get behind). I really dig the records beforehand though. And the newer ones are pretty good. The man knows his craft. White Zombie next maybe?

It's all great for me up to Monolithic Baby!, with a strong affinity to the 90's material. I think Dopes to Infinity is one of the greatest albums of the 90's and Powertrip, THE greatest ROCK album of the late 90's (97-99, not a great time for rock in general). I do really love that reimagining odds and sods of The Last Patrol, which they do in the early Monster Magnet style. Such a great band, they really should have gotten bigger than they did.

Two things I didn't hear mentioned: The self titled EP, which is more in line with Spine Of God and is in my opinion one of their strongest releases. God Says No had a different track list in Europe. It's been a long time since I heard it but I remember thinking they left off two of my favorite tracks for the US version. There is also a recent release called Test Patterns Vol 1 that is two early versions of the song "Tab". Spine Of God Dopes To Infinity Superjudge Tab ...25 Powertrip God Says No Monolithic Baby The rest I would have to listen to again to rank.

Mindfucker is highly underrated. Hell, the band is highly underrated. Been listening to them since Superjudge. Did shots with Dave at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach in 93 when they played with Paw and Raging Slab. Fast forward 10-15 years later to a Lunatic Luau in Va Beach and they played so early in the day that they stuck around and watched other bands. I bumped into Wyndorf and Mundell while watching Superjoint Ritual. Anselmo begs people to fuck each other up in the pit and Wyndorf looks at me and says “these motherfuckers are crazy”. Also told me they rarely play the states due to the fact they can’t make any money. They get paid well in Europe but not here. Sad

Can't rank the rest, they are more or less equal to me. All good with some great songs here and there, but I think those two rise way above everything else.

Not that it matters, but as a long time MM fan & 68 year old hippie, I'll throw my 2 cents in. First off... "Powertrip" is one of my least favorite albums by the band. Way too over produced & commercial sounding for me. On the other hand, the next album, "God Says No" is one of my favorites. Whenever I'm having a bad day & I'm really pissed at the world, "Melt" cranked to the max always makes me feel things will be OK & soothes my soul. My favorite hands down though is "Dopes to Infinity". It's an absolute mind fucker! My other choices lean more towards the older psych stuff, although I really think the "redux" re-releases are pretty damn good as well & I like them much better than the original's. That's just my quick 2 cents.

Love me some Monster Magnet. I agree almost totally with Jamie so no need to write out my own list, though I'd probably put Powertrip at number 1, but it's close. Pete's list is whack.

@@sotdude7 No offense intended. It was meant in a joking way. I appreciate your love for the music, & I'm just glad to have one more MM fan. I'm going to re-listen to some of the albums I haven't heard for awhile in the coming days and see if I change my opinions at all.

There is also the Monster Magnet e.p. that came out before tab....25, in 1990 and its really good, just a little bit underproduced, about 28 minutes, 6 songs or so, 2 that made it on to Spine, an early version of Tractor and three others some of which might be covers, the book on my copy has no liner notes, just psychedelic squiglly shit.

Here's what I got. I'm sure there'd be some shuffling after the first few if I did a deep re-listen. Pete are you gonna go see them at Desertfest next month? I only own four. I came in at "Dopes to Infinity" and lost interest with "God Says No". I went back to "Spine of God," and really, I didn't think it was as good as DTI, so I never got "Superjudge" either. 1. Dopes to Infinity 2. Powertrip 3. Spine of God 4. God Says No

Monolithic to me really plays like a "Greatest Hits" album ... & a lot of bands would love to have such a great collection of hit songs. ... which is funny because I don't think the album had any hits at all ....
