@@qjtvaddict Use the LIRR Port Washington line instead of extending the *7* beyond Flushing?
@matthewhernandez8342
@matthewhernandez8342 2 жыл бұрын
@@295g295 Yes that will cost millions of dollars and would be pointless. Just take the LIRR or the Q12, Q13 Q15/Q15A, Q20A/Q20B, Q25, Q26, Q27, Q34, Q44, Q50, Q65 or N20G. You don’t need to extend the 7 train when there’s a railroad and 14 different buses you can take.
@TheRailLeaguer
@TheRailLeaguer 2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewhernandez8342 That would still be out of reach for most New Yorkers, especially for some stations. Flushing is already overcrowded as it is, and the terminal constraints mean that some trains have to terminate elsewhere. Buses are also inadequate much of the time. Extending the 7 train will be a big boon for the area, since it can help alleviate bus congestion, speed service, and improve train turnaround capacity (my plan sees a four track extension, with half of the trains going local to 162nd Street and the other half making express to 162nd Street and local stops to Bell Blvd). With the straightening of the bus network grid and the extension of the subway, both the Murray Hill and Auburndale stations will close, with subway replacements more convenient for riders. The remaining stations on the Port Washington line will be: -Mets -Flushing -Broadway -Bayside -Douglaston -Little Neck

From a T/O's viewpoint I'd put the 4, 5, and in the S tier, the 2 and 3 in the A tier, and the 1 and both 7's in the B tier. The 1 has to deal with the Broadway lift bridge, which has a bad habit of getting stuck in the open position. The 7 is a workhorse for the crews, which often have to do 5 round trips. Weekends is even worse.

I love the "Literally the Z Train" tier. If the MTA could get rid of the 9 train, they can get rid of the Z train. Fun fact, the Z train makes FOUR consecutive stops at Chauncey Street, Broadway Junction, Alabama Avenue, and Van Siclen Avenue. At least the J train skips two of them.
@m34tgaming16
@m34tgaming16 2 жыл бұрын
I think the Z can be reworked, maybe make it like a peak direction express from Supthin Blvd to Cresent st, stopping at Woodhaven Blvd and Cresent St, all stops to Broadway Junction after, then express again from Broadway Junction to Marcy Av, stopping at Myrtle and then Marcy, now it's actually good express instead of just skip stop

@@m34tgaming16 I agree with your proposal, except for one thing. There are only two stations west of Broadway Junction that have less ridership than Woodhaven Boulevard, Hewes Street and Chauncey Street (Three if you include Bowery). So Woodhaven Boulevard should NOT be express. Also, Woodhaven Boulevard was designed as a local station, so if they ever lay down an express track, it would only be able to be express if hey either built an expensive useless new station (and knowing the MTA, it would be EXPENSIVE), or, if they would install switches to move them to the local track, which would slow down service. But besides for Woodhaven Boulevard, that would be an excellent idea.
@m34tgaming16

@@m34tgaming16 We all would love if it would skip all the way to Broadway Junction but there's no middle trackway, so it would only work if they rebuild the stations, which as I said, would be expensive. But if they actually for some reason do that, I think they should rather build new stations on Jamaica Avenue instead, so they won't have to slow down at the tight curves between Cypress Hills and Crescent Street.

I am surprised at how similar your ranking list is to mine. I was such a fan of #1 and the GS - TSq shuttle, that those were the first two lines I worked. The #1 for seven years and the shuttle for five. Of course, I would make some changes. Firstly, from an operator's perspective, I hated the #9 service. For me it did nothing but confuse the passengers and put the entire line in shambles. The kids became skilled at pulling the emergency brake, and they could actually spot the train properly at 225th street. And for the least little mishap, command center would instruct all Broadway trains to make all stops. It really never worked. Then, I would have put the diamond #6 up one and might have put the #3 down into the "A" group. That comes from my frustrations, when I would have that dreary long run on the #2. I would get to President Street and they would hold me and put the "damned" #3 in front of me. I worked the #5 one pick. The first trip was the 7:33 thru express south. I loved rattling the structure. But every single day we would get to Flatbush late because they would hold us at 420 Home signal at Rogers Junction to let the #2 and #3 services ahead of us. So for the entire pick which, that year, lasted from late February to November because of union issues, we only twice made our scheduled 9:41 Flatbush to Dyre. It was a mess. Eventually I picked Parkchester relays and finished my career there. During that time, if I got bored, the dispatcher would let me swap atrip with a road motorman. He was all too thrilled to not have to "go down the road", and I was happy with a chance to move the train at road speed.

Oh, it's cool to get feedback on this list from a former operator. Unfortunately, I never got to ride the (9) much, and when I did, it felt kinda cool to be able to skip some stations. Over the years though, I started to realize how unnecessary skip-stop service is, especially in a subway system. From a rider though, constantly getting stuck on the at Third Avenue bumps it down a few notches, and with the (3) absolutely smashing through Manhattan, I just needed to put it in the "S" tier. Thanks for sharing your experiences though!

The A train is unbeatable for getting from Washington Heights/Harlem to downtown Manhattan. Once you pass Broadway and Nassau then get to Brooklyn, something I haven't had to do in years, it's a whole other story so I'm with you on that. The 4 train is a joke at night. No train should be a 15 minute wait until after midnight. I've seen that on the 4 train at 8pm going downtown

I agree with this list and AMEN to the Rockaway Beach Branch proposal, except send the A to Far Rockaway, send the C to Lefferts. Also skip stop service isn’t about time saving, it’s about ridership spreading so trains aren’t completely full too early up the line but you’re right, it is at the expense of headways of a service despite, physically, more trains being present on the line.

I've taken the V a lot and If memory serves me right, the V ran Weekdays only from 71st/Continental to 2nd Ave at all times except late nights. On weekends the G would replace the V on QBL and the E ran alone through 53rd St. There was only one time when the V's service pattern and route was altered, and that was in 2005 with the Chambers Street fire. The A was rerouted via 6th Ave from West 4th Street to Jay St and the V replaced the C Train to Euclid Avenue at all times except late nights. The regular service pattern came back a month later. From 2001-2005 the V was all R46s, then from 2005 (not counting the Chambers St Fire) the V went to mixture of R32s, R40Ms, R42s, and R46s. When the V was discontinued in 2010, it was R160s.

If you don’t want to take metro north it’s the only way you’re getting into Manhattan, and it takes forever, even if you get off at 168 for the A train. I've taken the eastbound E and F in Queens a decent number of times during PM rush hour pre-covid and quite often they would run unbearably slow (at least between Queens Plaza/21st-Queensbridge and Jackson Heights). I'm talking like 5 mph (or maybe even slower idk) with periods where they just stop. I'm pretty sure this is because there's so much congestion since they share the same track. I'd almost put the E and the F one tier lower just because of that, but thankfully, this wasn't really the case with the Manhattan-bound trains in the morning. Those actually felt like express trains.

The main issue is how disgusting the stations are, I get in at 8th avenue every day and 75 percent of the time it smells like a mix of sewage, human feces, and homeless people. There’s also always someone smoking weed either on the train or at the station but you could probably say that about any train. Also randomly I have to wait 17 minutes for a train and at that point it’s faster to take the m14 which…🤮. I know it is hard for someone to imagine the "A" not being the primary service along Fulton Street and the Rockaways. But that is the way it was back than. YOU CAN'T CHANGE HISTORY! EVEN IF YOU TRY! Anyway, not only the "A" was a supplemental service, it is what today "C" train is. The "E" was Express Manhattan's 8th Avenue, Brooklyn and Queens Blvd. But that still does not affect it mileage. Its just that because it was a TRUE Express it wasn't as hard on train crews. So..... The next time you see the "E" train, please remember the train that has done it all! "Since many Rockaway riders were dissatisfied with having rush hour service provided by local trains, starting on November 3, 1958, four morning rush hour E trains ran express via the Fulton Street Line from Euclid Avenue, two from Rockaway Park, and two from Far Rockaway. To make up for the loss of local service along the Fulton Street Line, four A trains began making local stops.[6] All E trains began running express and all A trains began running local to Euclid Avenue on September 8, 1959.[20][39] On June 6, 1960, three E trains started originating at Lefferts Boulevard in the morning rush hour, and three E trains began terminating there in the evening rush hour after complaints from riders.[40][41] Shuttles between Euclid Avenue and the Rockaways, which had not been assigned a route designation, but often were signed as E trains, were labeled HH trains on February 1, 1962.[6]"

I don't know why this post got removed. But yeah! The "E" was the first train to the Rockaways. "On June 28, 1956, the Long Island Rail Road's Rockaway Beach Branch reopened as the IND Rockaway Line after being converted for subway service,[34] and E service was extended from East New York to Rockaway Park or Wavecrest (now Beach 25th Street) during weekday rush hours. During non-rush hours, service was provided by four-car shuttles between Euclid and Rockaway Park or Wavecrest.[35][36] Three weekday E trains leaving 179th Street between 6:54 and 7:27 a.m. were cut at Euclid Avenue, with one half of the train running to Far Rockaway, and the other half going to Rockaway Park. After the end of the morning rush hour, several trains terminated at East New York, before going back into Manhattan-bound service before the afternoon rush hour.[6][37] On September 17, 1956, rush hour E service was cut back to Euclid Avenue when Rockaway service was replaced by the A train.[20] The A and E later switched southern terminals again, and on September 8, 1958, the E began running to Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park during rush hours, with some trips terminating at Euclid Avenue. During weekday off-peak hours, separate shuttles operated from Euclid Avenue to Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park. At the same time, round-robin service began during weekend and late night service, because of the low ridership at these times. These trains would run from Euclid Avenue to Rockaway Park, and then reverse and run to Far Rockaway, before returning to Euclid Avenue.[6][38]: 216  On October 11, 1958, round-robin service ceased operating on weekends, being by replaced by shuttles running from Euclid Avenue to either terminal in the Rockaways. Round-robin service continued to operate late evenings, late nights, and early mornings. From October to June, round-robin service started at 6:40 p.m. leaving Euclid Avenue, and from June to October, the service began at 9:44 p.m. from Euclid Avenue.[6]"

First off for the 7, there should be some kind of physical connection between Queens Plaza and Queensboro Plaza. I do agree that the F and G deserves better honestly. F express should run more often instead of 4 trains in total, meanwhile G can have the local somewhere at a express stop, but not Coney Island. And for the Z, they could eliminate skip-stop service entirely and make the Z and FULL express line from Marcy Avenue, Myrtle-Broadway to Broadway Junction. Or just keep skip-stop service and still implement full express service and let the J handle the local stops between Myrtle-Broadway and Broadway Junction. And probably send the Z to South Brooklyn via 4th Avenue and cut back W trains from Brooklyn if they're gonna extend the N and W to LaGuardia Airport since I'm sure there's people from Staten Island who need to get to LaGuardia Airport have the W to relay on since Whitehall Street is a useful last stop. And lastly for the Shuttles both Franklin Avenue and Rockaway Park, the MTA could use the proposal that extends the Franklin Avenue Shuttle to Bedford-Nostrand to help riders who need the G that live along the Shuttle or just need to get to Queens past Court Square, have a faster and new option. I'm sure it'll benefit from IRT,BMT and IND lines that connect to the Franklin Avenue Shuttle. Lastly, for the Rockaway Park Shuttle, Just turn it back to the H and have it run up north via the Rockaway Beach Branch and terminate it somewhere in northern Queens (maybe LaGuardia Airport to fill in other parts of Queens that are classified as transit deserts?) And to make the Shuttle even better so that it can't handle the line alone, send the G and eliminate rush hour A trains to Rockaway Park. I'm sure it'll benefit people living in the Rockaways. But these are just my thoughts tho.

If we want the Z to be a useful line: the MTA needs to do the following: 1. Eliminate the skip stop service. 2. Run the Z along 4th Avenue, just like the M did in the past, but instead of terminating in Bay Parkway, it should terminate at 9 Av or further down on the R line in Brooklyn. Keep in mind that ENY got more r179's than originally planned. Therefore, they got the equipment to allow this extension. Also, more local service is needed along 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. The R train by itself doesn't do justice and governor Hochul wants to extend the R to Staten Island. Additionally, the MTA needs stop sending the slow moving work trains through 4th Avenue express tracks so early in the evening. That is hurting northbound service on the B, D, N, Q and R trains. Overnight track work does not need to start at 9pm, when trains are still crowded. Overnight track work should start at 11pm instead and NO track work on Saturdays between 5am to 11pm.

Yeah the Z needs an original line. Maybe at least rush hours from Broadway Junction express to Chambers st (The Weekday Full Time Terminus), then goes to Broad st into Brooklyn until Bay Pkwy on the D or such. Stops can be: BWY Junction (Rush Hr Terminus) Myrtle Av Marcy Av (brooklyn) Essex St (Manhattan) Chambers St (Regular Terminus) (it can skip Bowery and Canal st by using the cutoff) Fulton St Broad St (Manhattan) Court St (Brooklyn) Jay St Dekalb Av Pacific St 36 st 9 av (and then stops with the D until Bay Pkwy) Bay Pkwy (Terminus)

If you have the Z run local service between Broadway Junction and Myrtle Avenue while the J runs express between those two stations during the peak, there’s your efficient skip stop service. As someone who relies on the Queens Boulevard lines to get to work in the morning let’s establish the fact that the signals at Roosevelt Avenue and Queens Plaza slow things down especially since before the line was extended further East those were the core terminals. That being said if you had the M run via Queensbridge on the weekdays and the F run via 53rd Street with the E like it used to during the weekdays (and weekends via Queensbridge) you wouldn’t have to worry about the R being so slow

I live at a local station on the Brighton Line, and I feel like the B only comes when you don’t need it. When I’m wait for the Q at my home station, I’ll see 5 B trains go by before the Q comes, but when I’m waiting for the B along 6th Avenue, every other train will come before the B does. But the one-seat rides from Brighton to 6th Ave are great. And for the Q, the headways during rush hours are okay, but on weekends, like you said, it can be extremely unreliable and infrequent. I agree 100% with the Z train. I think they should repair the middle track and run an express train once in a while and just do enhanced J service. The Z should just be used on a different line. I mean, make a new more efficient line, like maybe that Utica Line, and put the Z on that. Also, I wish they put the F extended to spring field, to provide better service there. And the G is superior. It is the unique proud Thomas the Tank Engine of the MTA. Just wish they would make it 8 cars. When I'm operating, I'm scared at the massive crowds having to fit into my 5 car train in the rush hour.

The list is a bit off only cause you haven't experienced the full lines. For example with the red rocket: If you're in Brooklyn this line becomes hell on wheels. Ass headways & brings people from the two most ghetto neighborhoods in Bklyn (ENY & Brownsville) to Harlem. Same with the 4 on Lexington. I want you to go to 125th & Lex during rush hour and tell me how many 4 trains come in and out and how much crackheads and homeless you see. (And possibly how many times your train gets stuck)
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit 2 жыл бұрын
I actually take the (4) very often on Lex. The (4) is frequent. The Crackheads/Homeless (in my experience), are only present on the (4) in Harlem, which the (4) has 1 stop in. I think the (4) deserved to have a high ranking. As for the (3), I've taken it into Brooklyn, from Junius to 148 St, I was on it recently, it was fast, and came relatively frequently.

Probably my favorite BMT/IND line would be the L train, probably because it is just very nostalgic for me, even though I actually live near the G, I still am fond the L as it is a vital connection between Brooklyn and Manhattan. While I have no specific favorite IRT line, the 42nd Street Shuttle or the Lexington Avenue Line would probably be my favorites, the Lexington Avenue line because like the L it is very nostalgic for me, and the 42nd Street Shuttle probably because it’s the weirdest train in the system as it only goes between 2 stations. But I may knock some points off for not being fully accessible all the way until 2021.

Mad late to this but the bad thing about the F express train is that it skips a transfer stop (9th St - 4 ave) on the way to 7th ave. It doesn't feel like it makes sense to have an express train skip a decently big transfer stop for commuters on rush hour. But I think this is more of an issue of the station itself than the train because it wasn't designed to have a middle platform for express trains. Oh well.
