Thanks Anthony! Even though I'm could not stand the Cowboys growing up, I loved and revered Robert Newhouse! I wore number 44 my first year at the Garland YMCA! Ironically, he was also my bankruptcy Trustee when I was dying of a serious illness in 2003!!!! This show how God has an incredible sense of irony! I also attended Robert Newhouse's funeral in 2015!!! I felt I owed it to him!! He was such a humble spirit!!!

Good job breaking down the different types of FB over the years. You gave a sound, logical argument for Johnston being #1. One thing I will say though, is that while Johnston was so good they invented the dedicated FB position just so they could send him to the Pro Bowl, Walt Garrison was so good he made the Pro Bowl WITHOUT there being a dedicated FB spot in the Pro Bowl, despite him no longer being a feature runner in 1972. I find both feats impressive, lol.

Walt Garrison was definitely the funniest character of all Cowboys fullbacks. As a rookie, he signed with the Cowboys and negotiated a horse trailer as part of his contract. Once Walt was asked if he ever saw coach Tom Landry smile. "Nope," said Garrison, "but I only played for him nine years." His teammate Roger Staubach had 3-4 daughters and asked Garrison what he was doing to get a boy. Walt replied, "I don't know, but I'll tell you what, if you want to bring Mary Ann (Roger's wife) by the house, I'll try and get ya one." Garrison injured his knee in an exhibition steer wrestling accident at the College National Rodeo Finals in 1974 ended his pro football career. Garrison said that FB Don Perkins taught him how to succeed at the pro level, and then Garrison used that mentoring experience to teach Robert Newhouse what he learned after Newhouse joined the Cowboys late in Garrison’s career.

Great that you don't use statistics to compare apples and oranges. So many including politicians do that. You are absolutely correct about the evolving nature of positions especially the fullback position. In a Woody Hayes style of "3 yards in a cloud of dust" the role of a fullback would obviously be different than in a west coast open offense. You take those type of changes into account when making your selection for best. Whether one agrees with your choice or not, your choices are consistent. But, I did love to watch Perkins!

The whole time I was growing up, watching these (pre-1978) Cowboy greats, they only played a 14-game season. Robert Newhouse was my favorite FB. He was built so low to the ground and his legs were so powerful that he was like a mini Earl Campbell. I loved watching him as a kid in Florida, where the Cowboys were on TV just about every Sunday (or MNF). Just an outstanding list. It would be outstanding if it were for the entire NFL, let alone one team. What a rich history we have! #DC4L

They wanted another Preston Pearson in Springs. Springs caught alot of passes but he never wowed me as a runner like Newhouse. Newhouse mostly sat the bench those last four years. When they gave him carries, which were few, he'd run over people like always and then back to the bench he would be sent. I don't know if I ever saw Springs break a tackle the whole time he played. Springs did what he was asked, which was try to be another Preston Pearson, but the Cowboys hurt themselves by relegating Newhouse to the bench. Newhouse and Dorsett in the backfield, was the starting backfield of two straight Super Bowls. They changed that backfield and never appeared in another Super Bowl in that era.

@THE LOGICAL COWBOY you're really good at it! Ron Springs was too fast and too good not to play him, but we already had TD. Newhouse was a fire plug. Walt Garrison was the kind of tough I don't see anymore. Just like the NBA, I think the game has evolved into a kinder, gentler version of its former self. I wish you could have been there. Perkins was tough, too. He could scoot, and you never knew if he was going to put a move on a guy or just run him over. Landry set the bar high for the Cowboys, and Jimmy Johnson upheld the standard. I love the Cowboys. I always will. I just don't recognize them anymore. How long has it been since we went to the NFC championship? Embarrassing!

As a Cowboys fan as a kid in the '70s and a Cowboys fan as a 20 something in the '90s, it's going to be hard to pick FBs over Robert Newhouse (R.I.P.) and Daryl "MOOSE" Johnston! SIDE NOTE: It's COMPLETE BLASPHEMY that FB "MOOSE" Johnston AND TE Jay Novacek aren't in the RING OF HONOR! COMPLETE BLASPHEMY. I don't think what "MOOSE" did for Cowboys gets him in the HALL OF FAME - BY THEIR LAME A** "MEASURING STICK" - but he would be in mine! But what "MOOSE" did for the Cowboys, he should DEFINITELY be in the RING OF HONOR! Similar situation with Novacek. He didn't have a long enough "SUSTAINED" career by their LAME A** standards, but what he did for the Cowboys should put him in the RING OF HONOR! In the '90s I was never a big fan of all that triplets talk and all the talk about Dallas' offensive line. I think it diminished what "MOOSE" AND Novacek did for them! Same thing or similar with WR Drew Pearson, who FINALLY got into the HALL OF FAME! Every time they talk about Pearson they bring up the HAIL MARY play. Show it enough times to people who didn't actually watch him Play and they'd think that's the only thing he did in his career, so why should he be in the HALL OF FAME? At least that's one of my theories on WHY it took Pearson so long to get in the HALL OF FAME. That, and the fact he played for the "COWBOYS."

I'm disappointed Timmy Newsome didn't get an honorable mention. He did everything that was asked of him for the team and did it well IMO. I know there are some great players on this list so maybe he doesn't make it but at least mentioning him would be nice.

Yeah I really wanted to mention Timmy! He was really close to being on the list. That's how much respect that I have for him. He had an amazing career. He's definitely a honorable mention but unfortunately the video was getting too long so I didn't want to go beyond my average video length. Utube do not reward you for that lol. There are a few others that I didn't mention as well. Thanks Ashleigh.

Walt could only go 5 yards BUT he would get the 5 fn yards when you needed it. And he never fumbled. My old high school Lewisville TX.

Sorry I missed this one, difficult list to do. Landry could approach one of his backs on Tuesday. Tell him to eat these bananas, peanut butter, and ice cream. You’ll be lining up at full back this week. That plus they ran so many split back formations at times it just did not matter what the title was. Thank you logical.

Daryl Johnston was probably the last true fullback lol and who could forget the touchdown pass from Newhouse his brother was a good runner a gold medal winner I think from the university of Houston the one thing a full back should do is block maybe you are right about the boys drafting o line then maybe an edge rusher but you know who will be still sitting Roshon Johnson yep the longhorn that should have fresh legs lol

1. Perkins 2. Newhouse 3. Garrison 4. Springs 5. Moose. I might switch 2 and 3, because Garrison was a great receiver and a legit runner and blocker. Perkins and Newhouse were both light when it came to receiving. But the fact is this- Perkins was over 1000 yards from scrimmage 3 times, the rest of those guys only did it once. Of course, the problem is was Perkins a fullback or halfback in those early days? Amos Marsh looks to me like he was the half back. I know he is listed as the fullback on PFR, but I'm not convince that is correct. If not, then Marsh had 1000 yards from scrimmage as a fullback and Perkins only did it once. If Perkins was actually the fullback, then he did it 3 times and should be #1. BTW, that one year Marsh had was pretty amazing.

By the way, I've got another request. You may already plan this, I don't know. Are you doing a free safety and strong safety video? Let's hope so... So I guess this might be a second request. How about after the positions are done, a top five list of role players, regular players who weren't starters but contributed a lot? Oh, here's a third request! How about a 5 best rookies in Cowboy history? I'd better stop before I jam up your video making calendar for the rest of the year...

Fullback was a great position in smashmouth football but today the game is so much faster and the linemen so much bigger it's just not very productive.- I never realized Ron Springs was listed as a FB for 6 of his 8 seasons. it confused me a lil when you had him on the FB list. NP
