Rumiko has already stated that she only wanted to write a fun story with this manga and wasn't thinking of giving messages about gender and things like that. I really like Ranma and I don't think the remake is going to be bad, but the online discourse is going to be awful.

He could have waited in Jyusenkyo to cure the curse of the girl. Like he was there, yeah it was flooded but he still could have waited. Honestly there was no reason to ever go back to Japan to begin with, so part of him must like it. Honestly I see him as a cisgender boy-girl, like you could liken the whole experience to being intersex where your puberty is unlike what anyone expected. That's the cool thing about art, it's the mirror we see ourselves in.

@@MWhaleK If people project onto something, that doesn't change the authorial meaning, that just means that they find something to connect to, and as such, it shouldn't matter to anyone else. Sound of Music, much like most Broadway shows, has a strong trans following, to the point that the trans character from Tokyo Godfathers sings a song from it. It's not hard to see how a boy who transitions into a girl and back could become an icon for gender fluidity or the overall LGBTQ+ audience, regardless of the author's intent or whether the work, taken as a whole, is--by ignorance or intent--largely mocking of LGBTQ issues (Akane is mocked by her sisters for being perceived as a lesbian for her anti-boy stance, Ukyo Kuonji starts off as a hetero transvestite because she was "jilted" by Ranma but regains her femininity after Ranma calls her cute, Tsubasa Kurenei runs the gamut from jilted girl crushing hard on Ukyo (who was pretending to be a boy at the time) to potential lesbian lover of Ukyo to hetero transvestite crushing hard on Ukyo's butch persona in quite possibly the least funny story in the entire series--even when I read it in the 1990s, I thought it was dull). There are plenty of articles by trans writers that point out how Ranma 1/2 doesn't work well as an allegory for LGBTQ+ issues for a variety of reasons, and yet the character is still seen as an icon, especially for genderfluidity rather than transsexualism. As a cismale, I see him as an icon for positive masculinity, for the most part--he learns empathy, as a victim himself of the kinds of sexual harassment teen girls experience (groping, up-skirting, peeping toms/photography while changing without permission), and as such, he is often shown fighting off unwanted advances towards himself, Akane, and their classmates, as well as fighting known pervert Happosai to prevent his attacks on the various girls within the series. He is never shown purposefully sexually harassing any of the other characters, something that can't be said for Ryoga, who turns into a pig and sleeps in Akane's bed. He's also shown to be a victim of his own mother's expectations of traditional manhood, as he fears being forced to commit seppuku if his mother finds out about his girl side, which ironically forces him to embrace his feminine side, adopting the Ranko Tendo persona just so he can spend time with her. Yes, his treatment of Akane, especially in the manga, borders on toxic masculinity, but there needs to be some room to grow/grow up, and he does (if aggravatingly slowly).

Yeah, this is a little similar to the Ultimate Jessica Drew situation, where it really runs counter to modern trans discussions in a lot of ways. I can't expect anyone with a stake in the trans arguments or even feminist srguments to be happy with how Ranma works, because Ranma-chan is presented as definitely weaker than Ranma, but if we were to assign modern traits to the character, Ranma-chan would definitively be a "trans man," a male spirit trapped in a female body. But then this viewpoint would be an imperfect vessel to the trans community, because he does sometimes present as female purely to gain advantage, while never truly identifying as female. He is certainly not non-binary or gender fluid, by modern understandings he would be 100% male, regardless of his appearances. So basically he doesn't play by any of the expected rules for people on either side of things. I think Japan will probably be fine with it either way, I don't think it will crash and burn there, and I think there will be a fair audience for it in the states too (not to mention in other countries where the original was popular, like France), but I do expect a lot of drama on English speaking social media over it.

It's funny how the manga industry far surpasses the American comic book one when it comes to female creators. Not only Rumiko is far more successful than any female comic book creator in the United States (and I'd even say combined), but the creators of Fullmetal Alchemist, Sailor Moon, Demon Slayer, Magi, and a few more are women too. There are even rumors that Gege Akutami, the author of Jujutsu Kaisen, is a woman (although I think this has been debunked).

I really liked the Urusei Yatsura Reboot that just finished up. It seems like the point of that one was to go back a readapt some of the better stories. If I remember right, Takahashi famously didn't like some of the choices they made with the original TV show and movies and this seemed like a more straight forward adaption with less side characters that stole focus. It (UY) still had the 80s setting (outside the first intro which was set in modern times), but it really didn't change any of the characters from their manga versions. I believe when they do this Ranma 1/2 reboot it will very much in the same vain as Urusei Yatsura. The source material (manga) is God and do not stray from the path more then you absolutely have to. The original Ranma animated series had a shrinking budget and really shoddy looking animation by end. (The first series looked excellent, but what I have read the audience wasn't there for it like it had been for UY and Maison Ikkoku, animated series hence it was relaunched in a second series with a lower budget which looked like it kept shrinking.) What I would hope for, other than some greatest hits, is for them to adapt some of the stories the original didn't. UY anime ended before the manga, but only had 4ish volumes that didn't get any sort of anime adaption. Ranma has a lot more stories that never saw adaption. Though Ranma manga was also a lot longer than it really should of been and some of those stories retread of older stories. As far as the author complaining about the ending of Ranma, its biggest flaw is that its ending was very similar to UY (the status quo is God). I assume for any internet rumblings about the new Ranma, Japan will do what it normally does and ignore it. Let them rant and publish articles, create head cannons and post it about on whatever social media they care about. It's mostly harmless and won't change anything about the new show. Worst case scenario we (here in the west) will get those bumpers like they put in front of old looney tunes and tom and jerry shorts saying this potentially offensive.

I’m just starting the video, but I’ll leave my thoughts. The Urusei Yatsura anime that just aired over the past two years was way more faithful to the manga than the original series. (They also teased a Ranma renewal with a quick Akane cameo and a telling of the Ranma story during some of their English lessons at school). The original run(s) of Ranma weren’t too faithful to the comics… especially in the later eps. The only things that were like true to manga were the OVAs that released after the series and movies ended (although I think they were the first things released in the US). Even the current Ruroni Kenshin series (which aired between the seasons of Urusei Yatsura) was more of a one-to-one of the manga than the 90s anime series. I assume Ranma will air is this same time block (2am Thursday night/Friday morning). The only thing that was modernized with the new Urusei Yatsura was the artwork and colors (and a lack of nipples, I guess).

The good news is that Japan seems to be pretty good at ignoring western discourse when it comes to manga and anime so I don't think that Twitter weirdos who decide to get weird about this will actually affect the product. The biggest barrier that I've always seen to creating a new Ranma anime is that the series inherently has a lot of nudity, but is also supposed to be family friendly and that was even becoming a problem for the show by the end of its original TV run. I'm curious how a new series would handle that.

Like Perch, I sure hope that Ranma 1/2 doesn't get dragged into the trans rights culture war. But, given the fact that such articles claiming it already exist and are likely to propagate, it's probably too late already. Rumiko Takahashi is a GENIUS, throughout all of her various series. I even liked her one-shot stories run in Viz Comics' "Manga Vizion" anthology 20+ years ago. I'd hate to see one of her series bogged down in rhetoric, especially when Ranma was never truly a representative of the trans community. With his "tough guy" image of himself, he treated turning into a girl as a curse from beginning to end, and often took drastic but comedic steps to try to get rid of the condition.

In the end he wants to be her partner as a Man because that’s who he is and biologically is. It’s an awkward way to fall in love and that’s what makes it a fun manga/anime, nothing more nothing less. The reception is going to be what it is. Screen Rant is just speculating. Like you put it, it's probably going to be closer to the Urusei Yatsura anime where it's a more streamlined anime with modern animation. I don't think stupidity is going to be stopped. I just hope more people are smart enough where they can see both sides overthinking a fun, silly series. And if they're not, I mean, there's so much nostalgia for Ranma, I can't picture it not being successful with old fans showing it to new fans OR just being highly successful in its native Japan. Even though I have HIDIVE, I just hope Ranma 1/2 isn't locked on that app the same way Urusei Yatsura was so that more people can enjoy the new show.

The first four characters literally translate to “Completely New Creation”, which is all normal and standard. It’s the 5th character that made me stop, in colloquial Japanese is means something like “something like”. It can be used like “sorta” or “kinda” (“along the lines of…”). The thing there are actual manga and anime with actual trans representation if you're looking for that, for example Family Compo, a slice of life manga, published from 1996 to 2000 from the author of City Hunter and Cat's Eye is a more realistic than average depiction of transgender identity, especially for a manga from the 90s. So they could check out that stuff instead of falsely putting works like Ranma 1/2 in that category.

If its anything like in the To Love Ru: darkness which was a sequel to original To Love Ru series and added to story This series which I think? was inspired by *the one with The Oni girl who has the MC as a suitor(who is like master Roshi) & keeps calling him darling* keep forgetting the name , sorry 😓 and its not Ranma1/2 but a pretty similar one. Edit : got the name Uurusei Yatura I believe. Or even Inuyasha with Yashahime where it was a passing the torch moment where Inuyasha & older crew pass the torch to the younger generation happily rather than a forced one. Then there is nothing to worry about in the reboot from Japan side.

*ScreenRant should be blacklisted* 10:02 Hell, there is currently a culture War about Yamato is trans or not. Even though Oda pacifically said Yamato is a girl. Despite Oda already made a Trans character, Kikunojo. Seriously seeing all the death threats and fix arts. Tell me, why you humans should not be in apocalypse? I feel without technology would improve the mental state. Really Sad that internet does not give any attention on manga that has trans characters. Like Jojolands, Jodio’s Brother is Trans girl. The Drag Queen from Deadman Wonderland, Oddly he was cutted out the anime and the manga Boys in the Riot a story about a Trans Boy likes fashion and Boy in The Riot’s mangaka is Trans. Does people of internet even try to look for manga characters that are established to be trans? Or they just too lazy so they make up their head cannon about older characters about something they are not. 10:59 Or Maggs tries to make Connor Kent Trans purposefully misleading What Connor said Don’t call me Superboy. And Maggs says Everything that Kenny Porter wrote in Superboy Man of Tomorrow is non canon. I know Kenny Porter doesn’t own the rights to Connor Kent, But Kenny Porter should in fact sue Maggs. 11:16 Not just Woke Manga. Also they get angry about the Translation subtitles. They the translator purposefully didn’t translate what characters said in force in dialogue and slang. 11:32 You know there are Mangaka tries to copy the Ranma formula. Like the manga *Ayakashi Triangle.* Have you read that, Perch? And Hungry Marie, a manga made by Ryuhei Tamura. I am a fan of Ryuhei Tamura and currently buying his COSMOS manga. You can find scan translation of all Takahashi's works online, it used to be all but impossible to find all of Urusei Yatsura in English. It's a very fun and funny series. But be warned that one of the major characters, Happosai the Grandmaster of Ranma's Martial arts style, is a panty thief and massive perv that gropes woman. The actions are somewhat played for laughs but Happosai is also presented as irremediably vile/evil character in the series.

Ranma 1/2 is one of my favorite anime of all time. It was hilarious! Ranma was so ashamed (and scared) to reunite with his mom because he was supposed to come back a man among men, but since he was now cursed to be a woman at times, he couldn't face her. Because his father made her agree to assist Ranma with committing seppuku if he failed to become a man! Just an example of the ridiculous hilarity of it. That said, I've never actually read the manga. I've just watched the anime. I think I'll start picking up the collected volumes to read.

Ranma 1/2 had nothing to do with gender or sexuality it was often as cheap comedic gimmicks in the series like Ranma switching to his female form for a scheme to get over on someone but it never came up. the overall theme of Ranma 1/2 in my interpretation can love survive or flourish through predictment like knowing Ranma has to face different challenges through his journey can he find some peace and love through his journey like communication with akane, being honest with his feelings, or accomplish his goal to try and find his happiness

Agreed, it was never about anything in the spectrum it was just a comedy of a curse that was physical only for all who were cursed. Ranma never was a trans he was physically and mentally a male straight teen who fell into a cursed pond of drown cute girl which only transforms his physical body but never his mind. He hated being a female. Which makes him the opposite of trans, he still stays as a normal straight teenager male mentality.

I haven't read the manga yet, but I love the anime and will like to see a continuation after Ranma's mom showed up. Hopposai is the only aspect I would like to see toned down a bit, but I hope they keep everything the same as the show was maybe with more action scenes. Never understood how people could look at Ranma and think he's trans. He makes it very clear all the time : he's a man and he wants to be freed from his curse. Him taking advantages of his feminine look doesn't mean he wants to be like this forever. The only instance he might consider it is to get close to his mother, because if she discovers he's not a "full man", he's convinced he'll have to die. He basically grew up without her and let's be honnest, she's a way better parent than Genma could ever be. Who goes around promising to marry his son to anybody, seriouly ? But it's part of the fun, Ranma can't be left alone. I really love his relationship with Akane, they have some very sweet moments together, when they actually try to listen to their feelings. There is a lot about feminity around Akane we could discuss, how she tried to be what society expect of women, when she's love by so many because of who she truly is. I love that she got her hair cut and realize she can still be feminine without it. Anyway, the trailer looked fine, can't wait for it to air ! And please, don't try to change the ending, it's was perfect. It's implied Ranma and Akane loves each other, knows it and will just continue to live their life normally.

Storm's haircut being a mohawk? Like... It was... In the comics...? And someone is mad about that? Fake fans for sure. Ranma 1/2 is my childhood, but there's definitely problems with it. Intent or not, people are free to see representation for their sexuality or gender identity in it, and have clearly done so for decades now. Saying Ranma is a transgirl is incorrect, but a transgirl identifying with Ranma isn't hurting anyone. It's the ones who react with hate and vitriol to anything outside of their narrow view of what are acceptable roles in society that need to get a grip. Just my two cents.
