Remember when Maroon 5 was an actual band? This ranking of the tracks on their debut album “Songs About Jane” examines what their strengths were at the time, as a means of giving an idea as to why so many people (including yours truly) believe they’ve fallen out of touch over the course of the last decade.

I believe Not Coming Home was recorded in-studio. The backing vocals in the song are clearly Adam, and no other live performance that's been recorded sounds remotely similar to the album. Only brief footage exists of it being created though, a small clip of Mickey Madden recording the bassline over a drum track. Should also be noted that the guitar work is credited to Adam and Jesse, as Not Coming Home was written before James joined the band. Footage of them playing it without James live is on youtube.

Fun Fact :Levine on Harder to breathe- "That song comes sheerly from wanting to throw something. It was the 11th hour, and the label wanted more songs. It was the last crack. I was just pissed. I wanted to make a record and the label was applying a lot of pressure, but I'm glad they did."

This is the most insightful about a band's style change I've ever seen. I love it! I will say, that I have a soft spot for "Memories" and "Pay Phone" in addition to "Moves Like Jagger". I've never really listened to any of their full albums so I barely have an opinion myself. Time for me to obtain further education

Yeah that album had more hits than their later ones. But you can see that start of decline. I just wish they would give them selves a self reflection. If they really do like music, They need to go back and find that passion cause what’s coming out now is just so lifeless

I’m sorry, but how in the ever-loving hell can you rate Sunday Morning so low on this list? It’s soooo good! Especially the alternate, extra piano-solo version.

Great video man, Songs about Jane is an amazing album, i wish u could make a video about the 10th anniversary edition of this album, it includes demos of all the songs and i think some of them sound way better than the original ones like: Must get Out, Sunday Morning and Sweetest Goodbye, it also comes with 4 new songs:Take what you want, Woman, Chilly Winter and Ragdoll(the best one out of the four imo)

There are songs on the Songs About Jane album that are dedicated to Jane (Adam Levine's ex-girlfriend) and other songs are not dedicated to her. The only songs dedicated to Jane are This Love, Shiver, Tangled, The Sun, Must Get Out, Through With You and Sweetest Goodbye Harder To Breathe, She Will Be Loved, Sunday Morning and Secret are not songs dedicated to Jane. Harder to Breathe was written when the record label was wanting more and more songs. She Will Be Loved is dedicated to Sam Farrar (Adam Levine's friend and bandmate) and a girl he was dating at the time. Sunday Morning is about a girl Adam once dated and Secret is also about another girl Adam Levine dated. The songs Not Coming Home, Sunday Morning, Ragdoll and Secret were written when the band was still called Kara's Flowers and even before James Valentine joined the band. In fact, James Valentine has said that he met Kara's Flowers when they played Not Coming Home for the first time in 2000, and he said that he had a feeling that one day he would join the band and he is now in it. Even when the band was in the Songs About Jane era, they had already written songs like Wasted Years which they played from 2003 to 2005 which was on the album Overexposed but with changes to the lyrics, Miss You Love You was on the album It Won't Be Soon Before Long but was only performed in 2003, Can't Stop, also from the album It Won't Be Soon Before Long, had its first performance in 2005 at Rock Am Ring

The Sun, Sweetest Goodbye, Shiver and then Secret will always be the best of their catalog to me - they were so funky, confident and didn’t feel as formulaic as the rest of their catalog went on to be

Their first album was, and still is, absolutely fantastic. I would love to know what would come out if the band did an album without Levine.

From a drummer’s perspective who like more aggressive heavy songs (not quite metal) this would be my ranking 12-Sweetest Goodbye This one just takes too long to get going for me to get into it. This is the only song from the album I tend to skip. I just always thought the cheering audience after Not coming home could’ve been such a badass way to end it. 11-Secret It’s just to slow for me, not enough is happening, maybe that’s the point, but to me it feels out of place on the album. 10-Must Get Out Honest it’s pretty decent, It’s Catchy Chorus is really stellar, and I really love the bridge, and the build up to the end, but the verses, are a bit weak for me. 9-The Sun You hit the nail on the head with this song, but for me, I’d argue Tangled with that drumming, is the better Funk song, but that opening verse is so damn good. 8-Through Wit You I still really like this song, but as solid this tune is, I always thought of it as a more pessimistic version of Sunday morning, even the breakdowns sound really similar to me. It’s still great, but I just feel like it’s missing something, there’s no build up to anything like most of the other songs have. 7-She Will Be Loved Was it overplayed? Yes. Did it deserve the airplay? Yes. Well, in my opinion at least. The ending with the “Please don’t try so hard to say goodbye” always gave me chills, and it still does. But you’re also right here. This is a song I respect more than I love, but this is still a solid song. 6-This Love I’d put it higher, if there wasn’t a better version of this song. For those of you that don’t know, Maroon 5 made an alternate version of this track, where instead of fading out near the end, they play a very killer breakdown to close the song, I don’t want to ruin it in case you’ve never heard it, but if you know, you know. As for the main version, this is still a great song, and worthy of its popularity. 5-Not Coming Home This song just has a killer opening, great instrumental sound, and Adam’s best vocal performance on the album in my opinion. Plus the chorus always reminded me of a Michael Jackson song, but I don’t remember what song specifically. You can just hear how Adam is just done with it all and, ready to move on in his love life, all the more reason that this should’ve been the album closer. 4-Harder to Breathe Out side of the Beatles “I Saw her Standing There” this song is the best opening track to any album, and you can fight me on that take. Ryan’s Drums, Mickey’s Bass, the Guitar Solo it’s just at 11 from Start to Finish. Out Side of “Can’t Stop” from their Second Album, this track is their heaviest hard hitting number they ever released. Almost everyone agrees this song is great, even if they hate maroon 5. 3-Tangled Ryan’s unique drum beat is all I need, but that ending is just amazing. The drums on this track alone do it for me, but again, every one else is still at peak performance. And I used to think this was the best Deep cut. That is besides… 2-Shiver This song is really raunchy, and I love it. Valentine’s Guitar Solo is the best one on this album. Adam Screaming “Feel your heart begin the race” after the solo is just so good. Ryan again with another stellar drum beat, it just works so well, this is the best Deep Cut from this album. Period. (Also Side Note: this song and “Wake up Call” from their second album go so hard together. 1-Sunday Morning It’s Beautiful song about wanting to come home and being with who you love. It’s out of place, but complements the other songs. It’s just so joyful upbeat, and Inspiring. The Piano Is the best Part, but I just can’t say enough good things about this song. Everyone just played perfectly here, and the fact this song wasn’t #1 is a tragedy. How did “Girls Like You” go #1 and this only went #31. This Is Heresy!!! If you read all that, thank you for your time.

Can’t exactly guarantee another album sounding like Songs About Jane but Maroon 5 is making a new album without any co-writes in 14 years and actually making music like a band again apparently so we may be getting a proper continuation of the first three albums

I sort of had a feeling since he was the one playing it in the live clip. I even say as much in multiple captions that Adam could very well be the one playing the solos in the studio recordings, but I wasn't able to find any concrete confirmation other than what's shown in the live clips.
