I don't get what the big deal is - one, two, and three degree berms are all kind of identical.
This video isn't a substitute for actual medical training, it's more designed for public awareness.

My little nephew, for YEARS was absolutely *convinced* that Jellyfish would come get him in the woods. We would go hiking and camping and he was scared that Jellyfish could just fly/swim through the air and get him, and he would refuse to walk at night or go pee by himself without a flaming torch or a butterfly net. I think he got the idea from Spongebob or something... but either way, he wouldn't let it go. We showed him videos and tried explaining that they can't come out of water and showed him pictures and video of Jellyfish on land as puddles of goo and strings and he still didn't care. Once he got stung by a bee while hiking and was convinced he was right, and told everyone a Jellyfish got him on the back of his neck. Poor little idiot. He's a little older now, and he says he isn't afraid any more... but I think he still secretly believes it and just agrees with us to stop us making fun of him lol because like a month ago a thin vine brushed against him and he screamed and ran away! Haha He stays he thought it was a snake... but I think he's still afraid of Jellyfish lmao he's almost 10 so if he still believes that, then he's an idiot for sure. A cute little idiot.

The kiln story brought me back to teaching ceramics and how I had to lock the kiln room and unload everything after hours. Some ceramics just look so normal, and we're not used to things being that hot. It was better to keep students as observers until I knew if they'd be reasonably safe.

Remember that time at band camp I got hyperthermia, fun times. It's fricken weird when it's opposite day for your bodies temperature. First your hot, then cold, right after nausia/dizziness quickly sets in and your vision blurrs to white/pink static. Next thing you know someone is helping you walk to the building and into a cold room. I probably drank at least a liter of water over the course of like an hour. After words I need to pee, and then im fine like nothing happened. Kind of scary but my brain wasn't functioning so it was just weird.

I got moderate hypothermia while I was camping, and no one was trained to recognize it (I make sure now that everyone I camp with is trained in the basics, but didn’t think of that then). Thankfully I thought to get in my sleeping bag that was graded for below freezing, but I was shivering and shaking from the cold uncontrollably, which made it hard to get back the 15 feet to my tent. If I had waited much longer there would have been a much bigger problem at hand. About a year later I got trained on how to identify hypothermia, and realized that what I had experienced fit the signs and symptoms of moderate hypothermia to a tee

You should discuss near field burns, caused by transmitters, such as Radio Frequency Transmitters. The tissue can become part of the transmitter circuit due to proximity. This causes a current to flow through the tissue. Fat has high resistance, thus begins to heat. There are no sensory nerves in fat, so you don't feel the burn initially. The heat generated in the fat then starts to transfer to the surrounding tissues, causing tissue damage. This happens slowly, because fat is a good insulator, so you won't notice it for quite awhile. Symptoms can take 15minutes or longer to appear, usually as an itching sensation initially. Burns will progress through the burn phases, getting progressively worse till the energy is dissipated, up to full thickness burns. First aid for these is to apply an immediate cold compress directly to the skin. This stops the heat transfer into the surrounding tissues, limiting the damage.

To cover a burn wound put cellophane on the wound, it protects you a bit from dehydration and helps to combat infection. Also I don't know why they didn't tell this, with a 2nd degree burn. Run the wound under water for 15 minutes but make sure the victim stays warm.
@jeremyowen1
@jeremyowen1 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the severity of the wound. You should never wrap a burn straight away. If you wrap it in gauze, cellophane or even put a cream/ointment on, you trap the heat inside the skin instead of allowing it to naturally radiate out. You can literally cook your skin from the inside. My first aid and cpr training taught us that for a less severe burn, you can run it under luke warm water for 15 minutes, then wait another half hour before applying anything (to allow the heat to escape). For more serious burns, putting them under running water is a sure fire way to peel off what skin is left leading to increased risk of infection. You should immerse the wound in a pail/bucket of luke warm/room temp STILL water if possible, never apply anything like vaseline and always seek immediate medical care. Otherwise great advice, and I'm also not sure why it wasn't mentioned in the video. The field is forever changing though, so there may be something new I'm not aware of.

"You my friend are well done" 😂 funny enough legend has it that the patron saint of comedians was burned to death over a grate and that his last words were "somebody flip me over, I'm done on this side" Interesting story, the lead singer of Metallica James Hetfield, during a show once way back in the day accidentally stood over one of the pyrotechnics and flames shot out and basically cooked him to the point where his band mates described his skin as "bubbling" and "falling off of him." And what's wild is he doesn't really look like he has much scarring or lasting nerve damage. I got to see them live last month and even in his 50s he's fucken wild

St. Lawrence. He was martyred by being essentially cooked alive yeah. I believe the exact quote was, "if thou wisheth to cook me properly, might I suggest turning me over, this side is done." I'm not religious but that man was a certified bad ass. I remember hearing about that with Hetfield but I actually don't remember seeing any scarring or anything which is strange because they where using magnesium for those pyrotechnics so yeah, it should have melted the skin. Maybe a skin graft?

I spilled boiling oil all over my right hand when I was 13. First thing- agonizing pain. Second thing- put it under a tap. Will relieve 50% of the pain (still hurts to an unimaginable level) - get ice, frozen peas, anything cold. Put it over the burn - call your emergency services - hold on untill they reach. After they give you the strongest pain relievers you legally allowed to take, they patch you up and send you home. Then you got to put bandages over your arm with some burn paste and replace it every couple of days. Also very important, do not let the burn come under direct sunlight.

Can confirm that hypothermia is a very real possibility, even in "warm" weather. A few months back, I got caught cycling in a miserable rain storm for a couple of hours, and all of my "waterproof" clothing got soaked through. When a kind driver finally stopped to give me a ride to a nearby restaurant, she said I looked like I was in the early stages of hypothermia. It was like 70 degrees that day.

I had a dehydration-heatstroke incident, I stopped sweating, started stumbling, , and became disoriented. My dad had me sit down in the shade of a tree (slid down the angled side of a black rock on a sunny day, so that was scorching). Eventually my dad got me up, walked inside, towel on the head and back of neck, I drank water and ate a bowl of cereal in an air conditioned apart, I was fine in about a half our. It is easy to deal with, it is just noticing when you need to deal with it.

4th Degree Burns: Penetrate entirely through the skin and begin to burn the underlying muscle and ligaments. 5th Degree Burns: Penetrate the muscle and begin to burn bone. 6th Degree Burns: The most severe burns which char bone. Look them up if you dare. (VERY GRAPHIC)

I'm happy with the name change. I try to research to see if home remedies are effective , but 1st degree is counter intuitive in that it implies worst case scenario. By the way while not FDA approved studies have shown aloe CAN lower recovery time. The reason I saw the study suggest it's effective for a faster recovery but not enough to be recognized by the FDA.

Most of the time pain control is the biggest issue with partial thickness burns. If it’s enough body surface area dehydration becomes an issue but usually it’s the pain issue for partial thickness. As far as the heat injury issue, the military actually uses ice water troughs that people will dunk their arms in for 5 minutes. Makes you feel like a new man (or woman) if you’re really overheated. Also some genius patented these sideways barrels that the military uses for this and makes an insane amount of money from it. I’m super jealous of who ever that is. Paradoxical undressing was one of the things that was mentioned that’s very common in hypothermia. If you see someone that was just shivering and now seems a little loopy and is taking off their clothes then you don’t have long to start warming them up before they will start shutting down.

My uncle was doing maintenance on an asphalt plant when someone ignored LOTO procedures and covered him in tar, 80% of his body had 3rd degree burns, he survived fortunately, all kinds of skin grafts and crazy stuff looks about as ugly as he did before! Not many people survive such extensive burns hes a lucky bastard.

4 modern rouge videos in a row? It must be a late Christmas gift. Also my friend picked up a rock at a party I was hosting that was white, he thought it was cold but it was actually in the fire for 45 min before and white hot, he burnt his hand and we ending up going to the hospital and they just gave him a anti inflammatory shot

I was really glad to see this today, on the 30th of dec i got 2nd degree burns to my arm and hand and 1st on my whole chest. Had to get an ambo and go to hospital. Was not a fun time. Just maybe wish that it had come out a week sooner hahaha (Edit: I think they needed to discuss cooling burns, when i was on the phone to 111 (NZ Emergency Services) the first thing they told me to do was get in a cold shower for 20 minutes. Even when the ambo arrived they waited until i had been cool for a full 20 minutes. Next thing with 2nd degree burns I learnt from my experience was once they have been cooled wrap the burn in something like gladwrap (Plastic wrap) to stop oxygen getting to the wound. My advice would be if the burn goes numb or you have more than a palm sized 2nd degree burn definitely call for an ambulance or get to ER as soon as possible. This is just my unfortunate experience with 15-20% 2nd degree burns so obviously get your doctors advice.)

I once had a freak welding accident and ended up having a piece of welding rod (approx. 6,000 degrees F.) Puncture my side abdomen. We were able to safely pull it out without having it in there for too long. However, I had 3rd degree burns internally and ended up having plastic surgery to fix the damage. To this day I STILL have no feeling there and I never will.

After the description, I definitely had a partial thickness burn on my chest from forgetting sunscreen for 2-4 hours. It hurt every time I moved and using neosporin actually helped. Never went to the doctor and took a few weeks to heal. Also, I heard that the body temp is actually different for each person. My dad's average is 96.8.

one thing i rember from an education in welding that was't covered here. synthetic cloths are really bad if you get a burn because unlike say cotton synthetic materials will melt when burned, and to prevent infection you need to scrub the melted crap out of your open wound. good fun only had to do that once.
