"I think it's more her saying goodbye to her old crew, the bars closed down for the pandemic and many of her old friends relied on that to make a living rapping, so many of them left the rap scene while she ascended and succeeded, leave them behind. She still works her ass off even now, and this is what she always wanted, but part of her still can't help but see herself as a villain for leaving behind these people who at one point were family to her, succeeding in the face of their failure. Some of them were her heroes and now they can't throw everything they have into their music anymore, have to focus on working their 9-5 job lest they be laid off. She got to live the dream they had to give up. And it weighs on her, but she can't let herself dwell on it and hopes maybe someday she'll see them again." quote by meanderingNekomata~ i found this comment on her mv and i agree with it.

I think a lot of this song is her talking to herself. She reminisces and yearns for her past but it's hard to reconcile that with the fact that leaving those people and things she misses behind are how she became successful today.
@weredoody

I agree. I think in a way this song is her expressing her emotions over not only leaving her past behind, but not even being able to acknowledge it "Dissapearing into the midst of 'never happened'". Additionally its here being unable to reconcile missing the old people and places she used to be in, and being unable to in good conscience say that she misses them because she is so much more successful now than she was then, so she feels disingenuous or self-conscious over those she left behind. As an aside while, I understand why she cannot acknowledge the past, I really wish that some change was made to allow her to do so, both for her sake and others in the same circumstance.

@@l0kk016 Marine's case is a little different, it's not because she needs to improve her singing, but because she never learned how to voice act properly, and the way she has been doing Marine's voice apparently has been putting a lot of strain on her vocal chords to the point of injury. "Silent Singer" "Overworked And Under Paid" "Thinks An Office Is A Coffin" "Until Off Is Where You're Laid" There is a message in this part as one way you lose an old position (Life) is to be "Laid Off". Calli really said this in a very poetic way. People are so focused on their job thinking it's their life and yet many hating the very thing that occupies their days, and when they lose that job, it's like a death of their dreams. Can you pick yourself up and move on, possibly to an even brighter new self?

She recently said in a stream specifically about the "rear view mirror" line that basically she watched the people she looked up to originally fall behind as she joined hololive and gained all these followers. And now she feels guilty because she doesn't feel like she deserves this fame. Then stop the pity party, is basically her slapping herself saying "Hey you made it on your own volition, don't be sad". Theres so much that went into this song I love it

Actually Calli did a lyrical breakdown stream and explained that it was her feelings about her success in Hololive, prior to joining she was in the Underground Rap Scene in Japan prior to the pandemic, she initially applied to Hololive as a joke and she did not tell her friends about it. When her application was accepted those friends turned on her calling her a sellout. The song is essentially how she felt and her backstory in a nutshell.

Her lyrics are a message to herself, she stated when she broke down the lyrics herself that she felt guilty due to her sudden success thanks to hololive. "you don't get to be dismayed, you don't get to be emotional, feel blessed you got it made..." It sounds like she's talking to herself after feeling nostalgic of her old life. I wonder what she feels in these parts. Regret? or maybe relief that she made that trade i.e. reaching her dreams, but her life, friends has become the collateral for that. Great reaction btw.

To me the life ending really strikes me as the continued wondering of what she could have become if she hadn’t become Callie, a version of herself lost to ‘never happened’ that also was the part of her that allowed her to become who she is today, someone that doesn’t quite know why the idea of living your dreams is so funny. It’s almost a happy thought to me, kinda putting away that nihilism and self debasement and realizing that you aren’t who you were but who you were saved you then.

at 17:50 I think those lines are more directed at herself as well as being quite literal. telling yourself that you've made it, you achieved something you had always wanted so you have no right to want more. although I'm not Calli so I have no way of knowing what that "more" actually is past it (probably) being involved in the "trade". I'm on mobile so I can't really listen while commenting. I probably missed something. edit: listened to the song itself in full again. I think the main theme is along the lines of "I've become what I hated". realizing that she's now the one that left others behind to chase her dreams, and as much as she wants to go back and at the very least have a clean cut with the people she left behind, if not go back to being with them, she knows that she can't. she shouldn't. they got seperated in the crowd and she's the only one who ended up on stage. "I don't have the right to" I wish I was better at explaining.

I feel like this song embodies a nostalgic feeling for the time where nothing other than your passions mattered. That time where you're just figuring out what you want to do with yourself, but not yet realizing how much of a struggle it will be or simply not caring. I imagine that looking back on those times when you've reached a point in life where you're more successful, but maybe not totally content with the type of success you now enjoy since it wasn't what you originally envisioned, especially in the context of the song where it sounds like some of Calli's friends gave up on that passion along the way and "woke up to real life", would make you wonder how things could have gone differently, and if you could have all found success together. Calli's made no effort to hide the fact that her success in Hololive has led to some conflicted feelings in the past, and I feel like this song is just further expanding on her thoughts on the matter.

Like most of her more serious songs, this is another exploration of Callie giving up one life to pursue the one she's living. To me it feels like she's having hard time with the adaption and with this some specifically she's lamenting the lost friends and experiences she'll never get to have again because of it. The line about the friends fading into the rear view mirror is the thesis statement of the song. She's famous now, and famous in a way that she can't easily share it with her old friends, some of whom are jealous and spiteful of her, so she has to let that life end if she wants to be happy where she is.

Did you watch her stream where she discusses the lyrics? The part with the rear view mirror is about her idols and heroes in the music industry who she has surpassed in terms of people experiencing her music. She hoped for some recognition or praise from those heroes, but none of them ever did and she realized she was the villain in their eyes who got to success quickly without putting in as much work as them. And now she isn't allowed to be emotional because of her success. And your friends grew tired of fantasy; You're wishing they had stayed? You don't get to say "I miss you, " You watched your heroes fade Into the rear-view mirror of the villain you portrayed Stop the pity party, listen You don't get to be dismayed You don't get to be emotional Feel blessed you got it made

Every song she makes is better than her last in my opinion. She's growing as an artist, but I think it also has a lot to do with how we are following her journey. Also if you relate it to a three act narrative structure, each song is telling a different part of a story that naturally flows from one to another. Narratively, she's built up a lot of anticipation from the music she has released so far. Each song seems to hit harder than the last because its paying off on our investment. After all, a climax from the second act couldn't have payoff if there wasn't the entire buildup and setup from the first act of the story. This song to me is the release after a ton of buildup. Or in another way this feels like an end of season 1 anime insert song. There is more journey to be had but there is some resolution.

You could tell how heavy this song was in terms of its meaning. Especially hearing the lyric breakdown and reading her tweet about contemplating about actually releasing the song or not. You can read that tweet and see her thanking her fans. But all I really read was that she had to think about continuing with the release or not. She was probably scared of how these certain people would take it. Her usual songs weren't really addressed to specific people. But this one is. And I understand how she would hesitate to put it out. As unlikely as it is, I hope everything works out for Calli. I can only imagine how much she's struggling with this. I never even really thought about it until she released this song.

Calli orginally came from a underground rap scene that was pretty devastated by Covid. All the small venues, bars (the line about bars being shattered) and the like where they would perform live were shutdown, some permanently. In the wake of this, some of the other artists in the scene - many whom Calli greatly respects - decided to move on (to their "real life"). So while she is more successful now than she could have dreamed of before, this song is reflecting about the parts of that life that are gone now." Even if she wanted to go back, she quite literally might not be able to because those venues for the most part don't exist anymore, she mentions the song is about in her winter concerts "Its a song about the end of a long journey, on your way to a new one and reminiscing about the past, never forgetting the people you met along the way" There is even a clip of Calli breaking down when she was describing the lyrics, and it hits hard. clip is "Calliope cry while do further elaboration the lyrics of the song"

Until this reaction I never noticed how long she kept the -aid rhyme component going in the song. That crossed through several sets of lines. All of the from underpaid to trade. Looking at the lyrics it was a rhyme set-up within the middle 24 lines of a 30 line section of the song across a couple other rhyme schemes. That rhyme went on a journey and made a few friends on the way.

Interesting take on this. I hadn't thought of it being about a band of some kind in particular, nor put much thought into the idea of having to set aside dreams for reality. My initial reaction to this song was that it reminded me a bit of some of her past stuff, dealing with loss and loneliness and guilt, and I guess in that way it does also have to do with facing reality and trying not to romanticize the past so much. But I suppose my big takeaway from this is that maybe sacrificing everything you have for success is not always worth it...I mean, if you are successful, that should obviously be a good thing, right? So perhaps in one way it is about dealing with the aftermath of how you got there. But in another way I feel it may be about realizing what you might actually value in your life, because before you know it, the things and especially the people you take for granted could be long gone, and what you thought you wanted might just be fleeting or just not what you thought it would be. Being alone I think could really put a damper on that if those people are ones you thought you'd share it with. Having gone through my years of depression, there was something I never understood about my own attitude being a big part of how I felt. Certainly there are objectively good and bad things that happen to people, but even when things seemed to go my way I just couldn't shake this feeling of perpetual hopelessness and dread, whether it was about the future or just being stuck in the kind of lifestyle I was in at the time. My actual life is not that different now, but just having been able to change my mindset, I don't have to let the bad stuff get me real down, and I can understand that I have what I actually want and am fine to live at my own pace. I know all this sounds a bit off topic but in a roundabout way, I just think that's the sort of feeling here when you've got all these fans and fame and all that that might have seemed so fun(and still is, hence the guilt) and yet still feeling unfulfilled considering the times she left behind.

Calli inspires me a lot, and ill draw a picture for you to be inspired as well, from bits here and there of her talking about her life. you just had a dream and a fleeting passion, along friends that inspired you and went alongside your journey, just as passionate as you. enjoying the moment alongside them, laughing at the lack of success still ever so joyful of the chase. hololive then pops up, you and some friends apply on a whim....and you are selected...you skyrocket....you earn so much, so suddenly, without even feeling like you are any better than those who you admire and introduced you to the dream...that nerve-wracking and heartbreaking truth of your success story... i love how Calli always leaves room on her lyrics to feel identified even if your path is different. although dark at times through the mirror of her humanity, still extremely inspiring in a way that says "you are enough, keep fighting. if i got here, so can you" as a bonus, heres a short cliped section of her explaining the lyrics. and i want more people to see the human behind the fame. as a fan, i saw this and i already knew, she has hinted it so many times, and expressed it in so many ways, to have a full melodic song about it broke the dam and made my eyes sweat. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aOCdhMV5s6_Ympc.html

It's weird how Calli thought this song was no good and was about to throw the whole idea out. Yet went agains her judgement and shared it with us. It's just a song that's super relatable, it's really motivating to hear when you reach a block. Calli did a deep dive on her lyrics and broke down @16:00 *"And your friends grew tired of fantasy, you wishing they had stayed?"* Was about the people she indeed wished had stayed arround, stayed friends, but they already abandoned Calli or parted ways at this point. *"You don't get to say: I miss you. You watched your heroes fade into the rear view-mirror of the villian you portrayed"* Is Calli's guilt. It was eating Calli up that she was the one getting these chances, this audience to see her craft/raps. Calli wished that "if only the others had stayed arround maybe they would have been given the same chance". Calli went on that it was about people that worked double the years, sometimes triple the years she has been doing music, yet she is the only one on the top. Now she's portrait the villian in those people their eyes, while all she wanted was for those same people to be proud of her. I love Calli and I know Calli hates showing emotions (specially sadness) on streams, so hearing her break down, it was heartbreaking. I also wish those same people would just wear the big boy (or girl) pants and actually be happy for someone to reach their accomplishments, instead of immediately being jealous and casting her aside.

For a lot of us artists, we go to the booth when we have things weighing on us. Now I am an exception to that rule because I talk about my feelings all the time, but I can understand why Callie might’ve thought that maybe this song was too deep or people wouldn’t like it because it was too personal or some thing. But using my own discography is an example, people love authenticity. And really, until she released her latest project, I thought this was easily the best song she ever made.

And you have a point, it's the things Calli went through that's she's able to lay them bare in her lyrics like this. I guess the thing I have a problem with is that Calli's childhood doesn't sound fair. Or rather the people that Calli holds dear, even though these same people would rather go for her throat then to be happy for Calli. I can only speculate that it's envy.

I appreciate the dive and breakdowns of the lyrics. You're one of the best Calli song lyric dive KZfaqrs. None of the lyrics go over your head . Keep it up!

Hey man! Thanks for another video discussing about all the ins and outs that you can take out of what you feel :D Mori's work really speaks in another level and when it is pieced together and laid out in front by you, my god the amount of inspiration that could and is supposed to fire up amounts to a mountain song by song... Not knowing how high or low your own life could be in, I'm constantly assisted and picked up by the KZfaq content creators full of energy wanting to figure out my own creation... potential. I dont even know where to start, where is the spring and the source. I suppose the good ol "Just do it!" is a kick start but there's quite a few too many corners where I can clearly aim and immediately reel back.... Not sure why I end up writing things like that, but I want to show appreciation for giving us your perceived flavour from the art of life, and that you also help people like me keep a fire burning inside, no matter how windy it is in my heart. ♥♥

Not really much I can say that others or you yourself haven't said. There's a lot to take in from those lyrics, I feel, and it made for another refreshing reminder of just how powerful her original music making skills really can be. Aside from Polka's song Everblue which gets close, I'd say this song hit me harder than anything has in a long while, since Cursed Night at the very least. I expected serious, didn't exactly expect to end up emotional and feeling a heavy nostalgia from it when I listened to this song's premiere. It got me reflecting on a lot, and I'm sure in some ways parts of it were relatable to plenty of us on some level or another. I said similar in the comments on the song itself, and it ended up somewhat bringing me to tears, but the song is exactly what I needed in some ways. Can I place exactly how? Idk. All I know is it feels accurate to put it that way, and it's inspired me to do some writing, something I haven't done in quite a while now. Bit stuck for what to settle on, may explore a variety of routes, even if I'm probably just gonna keep it private. But the power to inspire and sparking creativity as a result, as well as emotional response. I'd say that speaks to the quality of Calli's work, especially this time. Maybe a bit much to say over this, but just my thoughts on it lol. Your insight on this reaction is solid to hear, always interesting to listen to just the same. Her flow and singing voice were on point, sounds like she's getting more comfortable with her singing without a doubt. Sax was a nice touch imo.

I am going to be completely honest. I am so late to this song. I watch some of her stuff mainly her entertainment side of her channel. Never her songs and the like. But I am in the point of my life at the moment where I am like questioning what I have become and my choices that has led me to where I am. So obviously I am just tryna search for reasoning and just something that propel me forward in life. And hearing her song kinda shook me and resonated with how I'm feeling. Now I can't fully relate to some parts of her song but there are some lines that does stir something inside. As I listened to her song on KZfaq I see a video reacting to her song and breaking it down. It was nice I won't really say who it was but I could tell her enjoys her stuff. Then i see your video and so I decide to watch yours to get differing views and reactions to the song. And some of the things you said kinda hit me to where it made think more deeply about what I want out of life and how hard things can be if you are going against the norm. And I just wanna thank you for that even tho I'm sure it was never your intent to even say something meaningful in a song breakdown. But I like the insight you have into some aspects of the song. I enjoyed your video.

The off-beat saxes aren't actually off-beat. They're doing this thing that we like to call bwah-buh or something similar in jazz speech. They're sort of doing a glissando into the note to make it feel more jazzy and groovy.

Roar I love your thoughts and break down of different tracks, but ya gotta stop being negative on your interpretations. Music is meant to be interpreted based on each person's experiences. Instead of going "I'm probably getting that wrong" assert it as your interpretation and it's meaning to you. Your tangents and stories that the song reminds you of are important to that. People watch your vids because they wanna know how a song makes you feel and what insight you can provide, don't be worried about talking too much.

She is just such a talented girl with a lot of experience from before Hololive. She's risen to be one of my favorite artists ever. Also, I'm not sure if you do requests, but there are some songs from a series called RWBY that are very impressive. Some have some interesting rap sequences as well. Like Caffeine or Ignite, both by Casey Lee Williams.

@@RoarTheRapper That's unfortunate to hear! It does get better, as the characters get back together! It felt like how school was for me when I graduated. Suddenly my friends were gone and I was in a weird state of not knowing what to do with myself. It was odd to feel the way the characters did. All of them. Anyways, I'd suggest you finish it or even do a song or two. I know there's quite an audience for RWBY music!

I know it is your video, but i personally liked the past reactions more when you focused more in the meaning of each lyric rather than composition related qualities... At least for me, i really like looking each line closely, like in the "nothing wrong with writing songs behind" i noticed it was in the past, so through that line i made the connection that the song is about her past career making music before blowing off in Hololive, then that "identity" died after she became Mori, hence "end of a life"... (edit: removed demondice part bcs i didnt know he already covered them)
