Their name 'BABYMETAL' is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11). The name was chosen for two reasons: - to symbolize that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal) - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun): BABYMETAL = ベビメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru) heavy metal = ヘビメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru) Ijime, Dame, Zettai means Bullying, No More Forever. So yes the choreo was interpretive with Yui and Moa fighting until finally Su steps between them and threatens to kick them both in the head if they don't stop bullying each other. This was their first major event outside of Japan, most of the 50k+ people there didn't have a clue who they were ... but they had the biggest mosh pits of the weekend and their merch outsold all the other bands who were playing (that included Iron maiden, Metallica, Anthrax and other big name bands).

Quote from our QUEEN… “I am so honored that we are confirmed to play Sonisphere Festival UK,” declares SU-METAL. “There are so many different types of artists playing this festival but I hope to deliver a one and only, unique style metal - BABYMETAL - even to those who will see us for the very first time. This will be our very first time in the UK, which makes us nervous, yet excited just imagining what type of people will come and see us, what sort of show it will end up being, and whether the audience will enjoy our show. We’ll hopefully get to see Metallica-san’s performance again after witnessing them at Summer Sonic festival in Japan which we are very excited about.”

"I didn't show my tears and in the night I was about to cry. I stayed alone in a room deep inside my heart. It wasn't only the bullies who hurt me, but also those who pretended not to notice, like my friend. Nothing [Nothing!] could I say. [Say nothing!?] I was about to give up [Don't give up!] until yesterday. [Yesterday is gone!] But good-bye to the me of yesterday. [Bye-bye!] Bullying. [Never!] Bullying. [Never!] It's disgraceful. [Never! Never! Never! Never!] Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone, and we all get badly hurt." Hi Hollywood and Smokey! Good reaction! This was their first big show in the west. They had a couple smaller shows just before this but here most of the audience had never heard of them and the girls were terrified they were going to get booed and have bottles thrown at them. They originally booked a smaller side stage but a couple months before the festival the organizers bumped them to the main stage because they were generating a lot of buzz and this is the result. I really love the fact that the UK have embraced them so well. They did a 4 stop UK tour as part of their larger European tour at the beginning of this year just before the pandemic hit, and all four shows were sold out. Su says the UK is like BABYMETAL's second home.

To be fair, that is a festival crowd they are not there to see Babymetal in particular. The people in the front were Babymetal fans but most of the people in the back had no idea who they were. The Babymetal CD was not even for sale in the UK. It had to be bought from a CD importer from Japan. I believe they sold the most merchandise of anybody at Sonisphere despite having a midday time slot when people are usually not paying attention and are hungover etc. They were the first Japanese group to play Wembley and they set a 1 day merch record there.

like many have said this is when metal was changed forever. this was their first big festival outside Japan. they had played a couple small venues earlier. they did 5 songs that changed history. the girls didnt know how many were there to see them til they walked out on stage. they were expecting maybe 6000 people not 60000. at the beginning you could see they were a little scared but the professionals they were they came thru. at the beginning Moa's ear piece wasnt working so she missed the cue to start but she came thru. the second song Gimmie Chocolate was next. in the video of that you can see how confident Su was. she knew she had the crowd by then so in that song she had a sing along and had the crowd singing japanese. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtJ9ddepp9LSZok.html this is the link to gimmie chocolate. three days later Babymetal merchandise was outselling even big name bands. even in this song they missed the last cue. they finished too fast but no one noticed. you can see at the end of this how the crowd was into them. how many lead singers, male or female, at 16 and 15 years old, do you know that can get in front of a combative crowd and bring them to be fans? you have to be confident beyond believe. ok i have a suggestion. we can give you shows that you can watch but it would have to be in another place than youtube.

People have probably already told you so I guess you know the backstory on this particular performance. The girls were terrified to go on stage that day for many reasons. For starters, it was pretty probably one of their biggest challenge yet. They were barely 15-16 there. And they were performing outside of their country, outside of their comfort zone for the first time. They had always dreamed of traveling abroad and perform. It was a challenge for many reasons. One of the biggest ones was the apprehension of the reception that they were gonna get. This is a massive festival, and it's so far away from home. Plus, it's a METAL festival, so not only was that crowd huge (the biggest crowd they had ever player for) but it was also a crowd that for the majority did not know a single thing about BABYMETAL, besides maybe that it was a Japanese bands with young girls fronting it. In fact, there had been numerous heated debates online prior to this festival for even inviting BABYMETAL, let alone letting them play on the Main Stage where BIG names were performing aswell. Many hateful comments transpired online and some people called to throw bottles of piss at them. Instead, they came and conquered. They swallowed their fears and did what they know how to do best and by the time their set was finished, the crowd had gathered, chanted, jumped, threw fists, moshpit'd... And atlast, shouted "We Want More !". You can clearly see on their faces the relief at the realization that everything went well. Heck, it surpassed everything they had imagine... And thus began the story of BABYMETAL taking over the world. A truly beautiful story with a happy ending (as of that moment anyway)

If you look at Su closely you can see that she knows "We got this"! England is the heartland of metal. Their merchandise was mostly sold-out, especially T-Shirts. The impact of this performance lead to Babymetal becoming the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley Arena. A little tidbit, Suzuka doesn't know how to ride a bicycle.

This is a huge moment in BABYMETAL history, this was the moment they took over the world. To be first on the bill in the middle of the day, as a pretty unknown japanese, very young, female group infront of (about) 60000 hard core metal fans that usually throws bottles of piss at you if they don't like you...Well BABYMETAL took the challenge and turned all of them into their fans basically. At the end of the show, as you can hear in this video (the last song), the crowd was chanting for more. BABYMETAL worked so hard here, through technical difficulties and wardrobe malfunctions (YUI's ripped skirt). This was the moment BABYMETAL took over the world! I love SUMETAL!!!

Gimme Chocolate went viral around Feb and Mar of 2014, with support of BabyMetal fans the organizer booked them for a smaller stage at Sonisphere 2014 (UK). Then online flame war ensued arguing if they are worthy to be there. The flame war grew so intense plus their sold out for The Forum, London concert tickets (7 July 2014), that the organizer bump BabyMetal to main stage by May. This is a stage where people throw bottle of piss towards bands they don't like. So when BabyMetal went on stage, they are definitely worried. After this performance, UK became their biggest market in Europe. This festival was held on 5 July 2014 and was BabyMetal first major metal festival outside Japan. a day after Moa Metal's birthday (4 July). So Both Moa Metal and Yui Metal was 15 while Su Metal was 16 (17 if you don't count her birthday 20 Dec). BABYMETAL Setlist at Knebworth House, Knebworth, England BABYMETAL DEATH. Gimme Chocolate!! This is one of the most impactful performances in their career. They were moved from a side stage where they would have had a couple thousand fans, to the main stage where no one had heard them before. Well, very few out of the 60,0000 there. You saw the crowds reaction, Babymetal won them over. This was their debut on the world stage. They had two performances in Europe warming up for this show, for about 1500 fans total. Before the show started, they couldn't get a good look at the crowd, and were shocked to see the size when they walked out. They were given a time limit and cut a song out of their set. Moa's ear monitor wasn't working when they started to play. In this song, Yui had a stud on her hand catch in her skirt and it was unravelling as the song progressed, Nothing got to them, they slayed it. What did you do when you were 15 and 16? Always a great and super fun reaction from you guys. You don't just sit there and analyze the music or the singing, you look at the whole performance and stage presence and allow that to help form your opinion. There are still some people who just won't even bother to watch or listen to them because they have it completely stuck in their heads that they are a complete gimmick band. Only thing to correct you on has to do with the gloves. Yui had her's on her right hand and Moa on her left. Can you imagine being 15 & 16 years old and finding out a month or two before this that you were being moved from a side stage as a virtual unknown to the main stage to open the show on Saturday when it is your absolute first festival outside of Asia? I would be freaking out and I'm damn near 40! Not sure if anyone mentioned this part in the other comments, but they couldn't actually see the crowd from backstage, so they thought no one was there and had to not only process "Ok, a bunch of people said they might throw bottles of pee at us, how are we going to do this?", but also "What if there's no one out there? Do we just perform like we're supposed to, or leave the stage?" Then they walk out to see somewhere in the neighborhood of 50K-65K people staring at them. By all accounts via interviews with them after, Su took the lead and with just a look to the other two said "let's do this!" and they killed it. This entire set is a master class in professionalism, courage, and perseverance. As others have told you, and you heard yourselves, at the end of this song the crowd was chanting for more. This story is just one of countless others that made me a huge fan of theirs. I don't know if I'd have had that level of courage at that age to do what they did, but they did and now they are huge all over the world. Maybe not the best known, but the fan base is ever growing!

This show was a game changer for BM. First time playing outside their home country, at a metal festival filled with metal heads, waiting for other bands like Iron Maiden, who had never heard of them before. They had just been moved from a small stage to play the main stage. There's an image of the girls moments before the show further down in the comments. They are obviously worried. But these rockin' little badasses of metal and fluff powered through their fears and won over the crowd as proven by the number of hands in the air at the end of the video and the merch sales. Years later, after the first show without Yui, Su had said she hadn't felt so nervous since this concert to illustrate her worry about doing a show without her. She didn't know how the fans would react.

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since they started... i knew about them in 2012 when headbanger came out... it thought, like other many bands, that it was a huge thing in Japan and it would stay that way. But surprisingly enough, the snowball became bigger and bigger and against all odds and criticism they took the metal world by storm.

This is the reason babymetal went from 1st Su live singing to Moa and Yui also live a yr or 2 later instead of miming and then instead of backing-tracks and a fake band of actors to the LIVE Kami Band. Because they knew the west and British Metal Festival crowds wouldve tore them apart. As someone previously commented said. In Japan you rarely get bands especially idol type bands only mime. You just have to admire the moxy of these girls, switched from a side spot to a massive main stage, in what could of been hostile territory, and to put on a show stopping performance like that, at such young ages, winning over a diverse crowd of revellers, most of which had never even heard of Babymetal,, made a fan out of me,🤘loving Babymetal Mondays, Keep up the good work guys 👌 👌 👌

What a great BABYMETAL moment. My favourite scene is after the last „We are“ (at 9:44 in your video), when Su happily shakes the fox sign at the crowd. You can literally feel the joy and relief about how well it went down, probably contrary to their expectations. All the anxiety fell off, the audience loved them, it was now clear that The One would extend across the West as well. Must have been a great moment for them.

I don't know how you got so deep in their catalog without getting to this song! But that's such a blessing, so save one of their absolute best songs for almost last. My top 3 Babymetal: 1. Headbanger 2. Ijime Dame Zettai 3. BxMxC

Great reaction. My favorite Babymetal song, until the next time I hear Megitsune. I like how at this point you’re so familiar with their names. This performance is legendary... and the name Babymetal is more than just a reference to the age of the girls... it also means a new form of metal. That’s never going to change.

They know the names, but are still a little confused about which one is which for Moa and Yui. They'll get there. No one who takes time to learn the names doesn't purposely remain incorrect on who is who.

The lyrics for the song are actually really deep: Dreaming I can't even hold it, there's a gap between light and darkness It's not just you who's hurt, I've kept staring at you Confidence (Hold) I can't hold it (Don't lose) I kept hiding (I don't find it ~) My goodbye until yesterday (Yestadi) Goodbye! Bullying (No!) Bullying (No!) Cool (No! No! No! No!) Hurt, hurt, and get scratched Fox (fly!) Fox (fly!) I'll definitely fly (fly! Fly!) Fly! Fly!) I will release all my suffering and sadness and protect you On the night when I was about to cry without showing tears The room inside my heart wasn't the only one hurt alone Nothing (Nothing) I can't say (Say Nothing) I almost gave up (no littering) My goodbye until yesterday (yes tady) Goodbye! Bullying (No!) Bullying (No!) Cool (No! No! No! No!) Hurt, hurt, and get scratched Fox (fly!) Fox (fly!) I'll definitely fly (fly! Fly!) Fly! Fly!) I will release all my suffering and sadness and protect you Feeling the pain, I'm lonely, I'm pretending I don't notice I can't escape anymore Bullying, no good, no I'm so sad, sad and strong I don't wanna see your crying face anymore Bullying (bad!) Bullying (bad!) Brackets bad by (bad! Bad! Bad! Bad!) Hurt hurting Is the become full of scratches and a fox (fly!) Fox (fly!) I'm sure can fly nor sorrow suffering I'll release you all and protect you Bully, no, no, no, no! No , no, no, no, forever no, no, no, no, no, no ! No , no, no ! No, no!

"If they were guys and they grew up into these big, burly dudes, I mean, 'You don't want to be called BABYMETAL' anymore." Who wants to tell them about LadyBaby? 😁🤣 Don't get hung up on the name BABYMETAL. It doesn't mean what you think it means. It's a portmanteau - a play on words. See Grington300 300 's explanation. Here's the important bit, and something that is easily overlooked: What were YOU doing with YOUR life when you were 15 or 16 years old? What was YOUR work ethic like?

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🚫 And… that's how you win over metalheads on your first UK appearance. Your pronunciation was pretty close. They say it a few times in the song, but you can just refer to this one as "I-D-Z". BABYMETAL fans will know what you're talking about. : )

Great choice of song and great reaction as always. The best Metal song ever about stopping bullying forever - and also the moment when you watch a 16 year old girl and her two 15 year old friends go on stage at one of the UK's biggest Metal fests, in front of 65,000 Metal heads who haven't heard of them before and are waiting to see Metallica and, when they kick ass, you realise they are more Metal than you'll ever be! :) Gotta recommend the best Metal song about playing Hide and Seek ever too - with a Kami band intro with solos from bass, guitars and drums. It's even got English subtitles too. Catch Me If You Can: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pM1oiMKblc3UfH0.html

Not only was this their real big western performance, but it actually started disastrously. See they did a five song set starting with Death. When they first went public they were afraid no one would show. With the way they were set up they thought no one did come. Luckily it was a big crowd and Su was able to rally them. Then when the set began Moas headset malfunctioned. The whole set is up on KZfaq and you can see both Su and Yui notice Moa hasn’t started her moved with them. They kept going and luckily Moa heard the drums faintly and realized something was wrong. She basically used Yui to keep timing until the headset was fixed. It really shows how professional the girls can be

The legendary Sonisphere performance.... supposedly they weren't scheduled for the Main Stage but the producers at the last minute, after warm-ups, gave them the news... Supposedly they were terrified the crowd would boo them off the stage... wardrobe malfunxtions and all, they conquered the audience just like you said... Rhat performanxe, to me, was a rwal turning point for them...half the audience had no idea who they were I guess... Awesomeness abounds....:) Do Band Maid - Wonderland live... amazing and different from their other tracks....

Great reaction guys. One time doing IDZ, it was raining. When Moametal came in from the run at the start, she slid about five feet. Another time, they wore white outfits and black stockings. When they did their run, they looked like they were hawks flying across the stage. Did you review “Kimi to anime ga Mitai”? In it, Babymetal explains that they are like an anime.
