Contemporary with Björk there was another child of the punk from another Nordic country, Sweden, named Mare Kandre. Also with a very personal style. She made two albums with the group Global Infantilists. She later turned into a quite famous novelist and died young. Their music never reached America and are largely forgotten in Sweden. Do you dare to check a song with 1000 views? "Passing" is one of my favourites.

She's from Iceland. She was in a band called the Sugarcubes before going solo. They cut the end off this video. After the explosion, she goes back inside the ruined museum, and that dude she put the bomb next to is waking up (still laying there, despite the bomb), like he was just taking a nap. They hug, and she cries tears of happiness, but her tears are little diamonds. Her sound is always electronic, but she's constantly trying new things. Sometimes it's kind of industrial like this, sometimes it gets real trippy. She's always doing new stuff.

She wrote this song for her Brother. He was dealing with Depression and other mental health issues. However, in Icelandic (Scandinavian) culture they tend to not dwell in self pity/doubt and so she Made this to Wake Him Up (metaphorically).

Yeah, up here people believe in the (now scientifically proven) home remedy of going for a walk. I mean, we still pop the most anti-depressants on Earth but they seem to be working, we also rank at the top along with the other pill-popping Nordics. Prosperity and peace might also have something to say in that.

mine was hidden place on mtv. I got goosebumps and the music video gave me really weird kinda scary vibe but I just couldn’t get it off my mind since then. I didn’t know who she was, or the name of the song. A year later or so, i decided to some research to look for that mv. I listened to her other songs. I was so glad that I found her. She’s not for everyone but she’s so amazing.

Great morning gents! Here's a fun story for you... I lived in Iceland from 86-88 when my dad was stationed there in the Navy, I was 14-16yo at the time. Bjork was just getting started with her first band, the Sugarcubes. The entire island only had 100,000 people on it, so there aren't a lot of places for a band to play. Needless to say, they played the USO club on base at least once a month. Since we were the only people even remotely close to her age going to see her play, we ended up hanging out quite a bit. She'd even buy pitchers of beer and bring them to our table and we'd all get drunk, then watch her play lolol :)

Great to see you guys listening to Bjork. I've been a fan of hers for many years now. She's such a unique and incredible artist. She's also amazing live. May have been worth you listening to just the song before watching the video, as that video is so crazy it can distract you from how amazing the song is. So many great songs you could check out by her including Hyper Ballad, Big Time Sensuality, Play Dead, Bachelorette, Joga, All Is Full Of Love, Pluto, Hidden Place and Pagan Poetry just to name a small handful. Also well worth checking out is the Icelandic band she was in from the 80s to early 90's called The Sugarcubes. They were massively underrated. They did some great songs too such as "Deus", "Birthday" and "Hit".

Björk did everything from '80s anarchopunk (with her pre-Sugarcubes band KUKL, signed to CRASS Records no less) to pioneering '90s trip-hop and carving out her very own avant-garde niche. A true musical maverick and an untouchable sonic goddess. She's a force of nature.

I was working as adj at a rock club in central Gothenburg (Sweden) and we played a lot of alternative/indie rock and pop music. Bjork's biggest hit was it's oh so quiet in 1995. The song was originally sung by Betty Hutton in 1951.
You should look up the diamond in the mouth. Very interesting explanation she gives about it being a treasure from her mouth. The gorilla tries to steal it and to him it's small because it's not from him, he doesn't have to wrestle with it. But when she gets it back from him, it's hers again and it gets bigger and bigger because it's a beautiful burden.

Great video! Here are a couple of quotes where Bjork explains the video a little more: “I thought I should be driving a very, very big truck to try to wake this person who's asleep, so I get the biggest truck in the world, and I'm so mad I've got metallic teeth, because when you're really angry, you grind your teeth. So I have to go to the dentist…” and then “…in the video for "Army of Me", wants a dentist that's a gorilla to find a diamond in my mouth, some people call it nonsense. But it's probably the most realistic way of expressing what situation I'm in - all these people trying to take things away from me, and the gorilla finding a diamond that I don't know I have and then stealing it. "Army of Me" is so much about me actually learning that I have to defend myself. I have to stand up and fight the fucking gorilla. Once I've got the diamond and I run away with it, it becomes massive 'cos it's mine. But if the gorilla had kept it, it would have gone really tiny. That's surrealism for me.” I hope that elucidates the meaning of the video a bit! Bjork is one of my favorites and it’s so cool to hear other people give their take/show appreciation for her music.
