I've seen them twice, once at the Fillmore East in New York at their first New York appearance and they got two encores. The second was in Randall's Island, a little mini-festival. Jimi Hendrix was there too and Grand Funk was the loudest band I've ever heard in my life at that show. My cover band did this song. I sang lead and played lead on this one, and it was F-ing fun to play! This was great to see thanks for reacting to it!

Side note… not sure if that was a serious comment about Mark Farner using a flat iron to smooth out his hair but we didn’t have flat irons back then! I graduated HS in 1971 and my hair tended to get wonky when humidity hit it so I would have LOVED to have had one then☺️

They sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles, and in the middle of their set opening up for Led Zeppelin, their equipment was turned off because Zeppelin thought they we pre too good. If you want a great one from the same concert, try Heartbreaker”. Their big hit was “ We’re An American Band.”

That was a big hit, but it was rather pop anthem-ish. I think their other massive hit, I'm Your Captain/Closer To My Home was incredible. Way better. I mean, there just isn't another song like that one.

Yes they sold out Shea Stadium, faster then The Beatles. This is a band you had to preform. They come out well. on records, but they are a party band, made to be seen. They were, "American Band, they come into your town and help you party down, we're an American Band". from their song titled ,We're An American Band.😅 Dave

This song was released in 1969. GFR= Mark(lead vocals),Don(drums),and Mel(bass). Loved them to death back then. Their song that got tons of airplay was Locomotion. A Little Eva cover. I saw them live at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City,in the 70's. Chuck Berry opened for them. Incredible show. I was right in front of the stage and after it was over,I couldnt hear a thing. Took me two days before my hearing back. Those huge Marshal concert speakers did my in,..in a great way.!

Grand Funk Railroad is an American trio band formed in 1969, and named after the Grand Trunk Western Railroad in Michigan. The founding members were Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and Mel Schacher. They were precursors of heavy metal and were promoted as "the loudest rock and roll band in the world" in the early 1970's.. sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles. ❤❤❤❤

These guys were bigger than anyone for a good period of time, especially live. They were opening for Led Zeppelin in their hometown of Detroit and doing so well LZ's manager told their manager to cut it short. They refused, went back out and told the crowd...the crowd freaked out so much that Led Zeppelin never went on stage, they left, lol. Grand Funk Railroad also sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles! They had a huge following and were called 'the people's band'. Many, many hits including Some Kind of Wonderful, I'm Your Captain, We're an American Band etc.

They did this in '69, the front man Mark and the drummer Don were 20 yrs old and the bass player was 19. I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Mark Farner 3 months ago. He recalled how they sold out Shea stadium faster then the Beatles. They had a hit song at the time called. "I'm your captain" and the Vets adopted it as their song. Mark wrote songs on the political climate at the time, mant wanted the V. war stopped, so they had a lot of young people following them even for their stand on things, they were known as the peoples band. Mark is still rockin' on stage with his voice as sweet as ever and does not miss a beat. He's a kind man with a love for his fans. Thanks for sharing this!

Grand Funk Railroad is an American rock band formed in 1969 and were from Flint, Michigan. The founding members were Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboard), Don Brewer (drums, vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass). Farner was also the bands primary songwriter. "GFR" is considered one of the most influential hard rock bands of all time. They have left an indelible mark on music history, with their hard-hitting bluesy sound. They have influenced many highly successful bands such as Kiss, Alice Cooper and John Melencamp. This bands signature sound was a beautifully vibrant fusion of rock, blues and a dash of funk. lol and this blend would ultimately define their unique sound. Here's another song to check out, if interested "Grand Funk Railroad - Black Licorice (excellent sound)" (by the channel: Worrell57)

This was 1969. I saw them 12 days before my 13th birthday in 1970... My 1st concert. Already had their first 2 albums. My favorite band of all time. The "red album" is on at least once a week. The 1970 Live album is the set list of the concert I saw. Over 25 million albums sold 10 million in 1970 alone. And not in the RRHoF for some inexcusable reason. Proof the HOF is a joke. They opened for Led Zeppelin once and Zeppelin's manage pulled the plug on them halfway through, "they were throwing Zep under the bus and he feared Zep couldn't follow. Heartbreaker, Mean Mistreater, Into the Sun, heck anything from the first two albums - both released in 1969, On Time and the Red Album

about F-ing time, LOL!!! i have left at least 30 requests for different GFR songs on so many of your videos in days gone by. There is so much GFR influence in so many different bands you have reacted to, great thing about GFR is each song like Led Zeppelin fits a different genre, yet each song after the first 3 notes you can do a blind listen test, and know it is GFR. We Don't Need So Stinkin Auto-Tune!! I got turned onto GFR back in 73 when my half brother got back from Vietnam, and first thing he did was make soundtracks that kept him sane during the conflict for family. I had a compilation 8track tape of GFR's greatest hits, before the Greatest Hits came out. as a 4 year old kid, I wore that tape out, but even though its been several decades since I have even seen a 8Track Player, You Better Believe I still have that Tape!! More of the best GFR songs, Mean Mistreater, Im Your Capitan/Closer to my Home, I Can Feel Him in the Morning, and Heartbreaker, which did make Number 1 on the charts for a couple weeks. (RIP) My Brother Roger McClure 1955-2016> Thank You For Everything, and Thank You for turning me on to Great Music! GOD Bless you Trash Talkers and Thanks!

This performance is from 1969!! Look it up if you doubt me. Mark Farner (lead vocalist and multi instrumentalist) is Badassed!! as is Don Brewer (drums) and Mel Schacher (bass)!! They had many many hits that you would really enjoy But if I could make a request. Check out "Foot Stompin Music " the live performance if you like what you just seen. Thanks again for your reaction!!

I think the harmonica is underrated as well as flutes, and saxophones! You never hear them anymore but they’re actually awesome if not over done. That’s what’s cool about 70s and 80s music they use so many instruments.

Wow my father used to have them play at his frat parties in Michigan. He said one of them was dating his frat brothers sister and would play a few songs then party with the frat. He went to the GM institute in flint and worked for Pontiac from 69 to 77. He did say they were wild and partied harder than anyone there. He said they stopped coming late 1970.

These boys played at Woogstock. I grew up on their music and the Iron Butterfly. I'm 70 now and i still rock this. This was the late 60's.

Lots of power for a 3 piece band. My first concert at the Forum and we rocked out through the whole thing. Around '71 or '72. 👍👍👍

Now you see why they are Grand FUNK railroad! Great old band of the early 70s. You HAVE to react to their song (I'm your Captain)... Closer to Home. Their best, I think. They also had a HUGE radio hit that ALL the kids were dancing to, The Locomotion. Check them out. Great reaction, as always. Oh, btw... no, it's not Bob Ross and no hair iron. He has hair like mine, just straight. ✌ Jodi/Child of the 60s . 15:08

They were only 20 years old in this video (the bass player was 19). That was their first year together as Grand Funk Railroad. In 1971, they sold out Shea Stadium in 7 days. It took the Beatles 7 weeks! Lead singer Mark Farner hadn't played guitar for about a year-and-a-half. He said he was "relearning it!" And he didn't start playing guitar until he was 15. Mark Farner is STILL performing at the age of 73.

.....despite their name, Grand Funk Railroad was not a funk band. 😎They were an early hard rock band that formed in Michigan in the late 60's. Their name is a send up of the Grand Trunk Railway Company that was on the scene in the USA during the earlier part of the 20th century.....

The amazing thing is that this was 1969, that these guys were 18, 19 and 21 years old, that this sound is coming from a three man band and that from1969 through 1975 Grand Fun k Railroad was the most popular live band in the world. Mark Farner is the lead guitarist, he also wrote 90% of their songs, he started out playing bass, he plays drums and also was the organist on many GFR songs before they brought Craig Frost on organ into the band. He is obviously the lead singer as well. Incredibly talented musician and front man!
