IIRC 93 shows were getting kinda rough around the edges, kind of tired and sloppy. They needed a break. I think James blew his voice out too so it wasn't doing the best.

@@sportsmom165that's what traumatized young men do. Unfortunate but true. Jason made out alright and they're good now, so that's all that matters.....Jason got to be a part of the strongest most legendary stretch of albums and touring the world has and will ever see. He was my favorite of the bassists, Cliff was a genius but died when I was two so hard to really connect outside the music. Jason had no rival on backup vocals in MetallicA, maybe any backup vocalist in rock/metal including Cantrell. And who else could goose-step with the best of them than Jason.

Super underrated Metallica song, I personally say it's the heaviest Metallica song. Y'all would love "My Friend Of Misery", Jason's melancholic bassline hits you like a ton of bricks. Super powerful song both musically and lyrically, Metallica was one of the first bands that got me into metal so they will forever hold a special place in my heart! Great reaction as usual guys! 🤘🤘🤙🤙

When Metallica revisited Master of puppets while writing and justice for all... They must have said to themselves we need another battery? We need another sanitarium? What they should have done was said we need another thing that should not be?...sad but true... Nothing beats Master of puppets when they wrote and justice for all they were copying themselves

This was the last song they wrote for Master of Puppets feeling they needed one more song that wasnt fast yet wasnt a ballad . Something that just had a slow chug to it to break up the album . They succeeded ! Its a stomper . Leper Messiah is another song not talked about much on that record and is a hidden gem if you ask me .

Just wanted to let you know, I love you guys; I adore the format of the show (the trivia at the beginning is dead fun and a clever hook!), and I love that you blokes are so open-minded. Cheers to that, and cheers to you, Hollywood and Smoke-Dogg. Though I may occasionally miss your video on the day of release, I ALWAYS get ‘round to it. Speaking of which: This tune’s lyrics and concept are based upon the lore from the father of cosmic horror, H.P. Lovecraft, whose complex Universe and lore were an huge influence upon me as a young, award-winning writer of short fiction. IMO, now, as both a Lovecraft fan and a classic Metallica fan, this is possibly my favourite live Metallica performance of all time. Between James throwing all his rage and frustration into the vocal delivery (he sounds as if he is actually summoning dark Lovecraftian space gods from illimitable gulfs of blackness, and the expressions on his face are the most honest expressions of TRUE MALEVOLENCE I’ve ever seen upon the visage of a rock singer. Other artists have to wear fucking MASKS to produce the effect this guy produced with just an half-pint of whiskey , a few beers, a couple rails of toot or crank to keep him from becoming sloppy, and his own, all-natural rage at the world that took one of his best mates from him just a couple years before. Watching Het’s face through this performance, synced with his voice is one of those weird pleasures that just get all the right neurotransmitters flowing. N.B.: James was an hardcore alcoholic for much of his life. He also did a fair amount of coke and speed. Lars had a pretty serious coke issue. However, allegedly everybody is mostly clean and sober, though I’d be VERY surprised if Kirk disn’t smoke up fairly often.

As much as it was the soundtrack to the 80s, this era of Metallica sent a lot of metal down a very specific path. There weren't that many chuggy heavy riff bands out there before Metallica established this style. I remember this album blowing my mind so hard when I first heard it around 1990. So many cool bands spawned from this style. Doom metal in particular, they took slow, heavy chugging metal and slowed it down even more and made it really gloomy. Check out a song by Paradise Lost, I suggest Embers Fire. Everything from their album 1993 album Icon is great. Metallica was extremely influential. That kind of metal survived the decimation that Grunge brought about.

So Ron McGovney was the first bassist for Metallica. He left to pursue his hobbies which was photography and dirt bike riding. They found Cliff in San Fran but was told they would have he moved from La up to Frisco if he was going to join the band. Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitarist but was kicked out due to his violent and Reckless Behavior when he drank. Kirk Hammett was a guitarist from a band called Exodus that would happily join Metallica after Dave's departure. Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in 1986 on their Master of Puppets tour. Jason Newsted would take his place soon after and would be their basis until his final departure when they played the song on VH1 fade2black many years ago. Fun fact: there are two key point to Metallica's career where they were a five-person band. The first being that James couldn't sing and play guitar at the same time and decided to get somebody into play the guitar but didn't like how it sounded so he tried his hand at playing the guitar while somebody else sang and didn't like that either and forced himself to learn how to play and sing at the same time. The second being when James had a serious incident on tour with some pyrotechnics and Bob Rock had to stand in his place and play guitar while James sang. Lastly, song request. Metallica: Hate Train.

Dave got kicked out of the band before Kill em All came out due to his alcohol dependency. Then he went on to Front and lead guitar Megadeth. Lars, James and Kirk have been in the band forever and have grey hair to prove it. Jason was bullied and tormented by the ither three when he stepped in for Cliff. Things got way out of hand and he left the band to form his own. Robert took his spot coming from Suicidal Tendencies and a stint playing with Ozzy if i recall. Robert has been in the band since St Anger i think. Jason was there for Garage Days Inc, Justice, Black album, S&M 1 and both Load albums. Cliff was there for Kill em All, Lightning and Puppets.

Dave Mustaine was in the band 10 months, fired in 81' never cut any albums with Metallica. Kirk's been lead guitarist 🎸 for 42 yrs! Jason Newstead was the bassist since 87-03 replacing the one & only Cliff Burton RIP 😢. I've seen them since LA days at the Whiskey a go go...and til present. Your right Smokey, 88' was their prime! But I will say, they have steadily kept their fan base and music 🎶 evolving, along with being 60-61 years old pretty amazing!! Just seen them last month, Incredible as always!! James can control the audience like a beast! Metallica live is better than any studio album, the energy is crazy!! And people were still mosh pitting, not like the 80's, but still rocking out! I can't believe sometimes how I survived the 80s, let alone these guys! I'm 58 and they play like there kids makes me feel young in my heart ❤️ Metallica is my 2nd best live concerts of all time from a club in Los Angeles to sold out arenas I've seen them 12x including 9/25/23 & 9/27/23 this year! Only 1 concert was better, and it was the Purple Rain Tour of Prince & the revolution 💜 that was absolutely 💯 crazy!! Prince was a 🎶 musical genius imo. And I'm so blessed to have seen him. Metallica peaked in 99 as far as James voice goes, he could growl and he could howl like the wolf he is. The beauty of his voice on the original s&m album is unmatched, not to be confused by with the snarl and melody of the late 80s early 90s James which carved out the best his voice fit to Metal Militia MetallicA. For me i love all MetallicA equally through Death 🧲⚰️. The last two albums pushed me further into my appreciation for the 90s MetallicA i grew up with and listened to exclusively when it was my headphones or truck for an 8 yr period; i have heard MetallicA more than any sound or noise in my 38 yrs on this earth including silence, ive heard it in my dreams, scary AF dreams but in my dreams none the less. Yeah, peak Metallica! Kirk is in the band since 1983 since Mustaine left. Jason was in the band from 86 to 2001. Talking about Jason, check out his project called "Newsted" the song King Of The Underdogs.

Dave left prior to the release of Kill ‘Em All. It’s been Kirk, James, and Lars ever since. The bassists were Cliff, then Jason, now Rob.

The thing with Lars... In this show, it's hard to tell to the untrained ear but he rushes his fills and there are other subtle timing issues with his playing. HOWEVER, in the 80s, Metallica were so tightly fit together that whenever Lars sped up a bit, the band just followed effortlessly! Later years, that wasn't quite the case and it's much more obvious to people. But here, it's hard to tell because the entire band is good, the camera are rapidly changing and, they're moving around a lot, and the overall sound is unified, even if a bit odd in timing. But Lars only cams don't really exist for a reason.

About Lars. People say he's a genius in studio and live he's well above average. This is the start of them being on top. 88 to 93. The Moscow show in front of 1.6mil is in 91.

Lars was a great drummer back then. People who trash him were not around at that time and only compare him to today's drummers. Even if his technique wasn't perfect, he was creative and his energy was a big part of Metallica's sound. Even the greats in metal (Lombardo, Benante, Portnoy) admired what he was doing. Lars haters....please STFU.

Metallica's prime was after the release of the self-titled black album. Not necessarily because of that album It's a great album and back then all the purists were against it because they thought Metallica sold out when they were wrong. The reason they were in their prime then was because they had that huge album plus their back catalog which was phenomenal and they were still young still drinking but not alcoholic yet.
