Discovering New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Violent Femmes, Nine Inch Nails, Siouxie & the Banshees, etc. was such a revelation to me in high school. New Wave/Alternative sound was so different. Nothing like it on the radio, which had some rap, but a lot of big hair rock bands and pop like Madonna or Michael Jackson. I became addicted to the local college radio station and 120 Minutes on Mtv. Awesome memories, thank you!

It was quite often played more than once each night and worked well with bands like Joy Division, Gary Numan, orchestral manoeuvres in the dark, depeche mode , blancmange , Ultravox, Human League, Visage, Duran Duran and the cure.

New Order was instrumental in making the dance floor cool again. As others have said they formed from the ashes of Joy Division, themselves a hugely influential post punk/ goth band, after singer Ian Curtis died by suicide on the eve of their first ever U.S. tour. The band had decided when they formed that if anyone left the band for any reason they would break up. They chose to stay together under a new name, and changed the course of dance clubs around the world.

FYI All in the Family was not a black show. Archie Bunker was a bigoted character that learned how not to be over the course of the show. He had a liberal son in law (and daughter), a black neighbor, George Jefferson and encountered transwomen and gay men. A very popular show in the 70's. Maude was another spin off show.

Brings back so many memories - when Top of the Pops was must see TV :) Note, that wasn’t the original music video - which is very trippy. That’s definitely a much more recent lyric video - and I might be wrong, but I think that was a remastered version of the track too as there were a couple of moments where the sound was subtly different to what I expected after hearing this so many times - but that might have been from listening to it on the phone which might have done some of its own reprocessing of the sound.
