Thanks guys!! Glad you enjoyed it. I’ll take it as a belated birthday present 😆😊 Apparently this song has been labeled by some as ‘the Stairway to Heaven of the 80s’… people REALLY love this song haha. The professor of rock did a great breakdown of this song on his channel, y’all should check it out. Morrissey paraphrased that “I’m the son and the heir of nothing in particular” from the novel Middlemarch. The Smiths were a huge influence on Pete Doherty of the Libertines, another one of my favorite bands 😊 Other favorite Smiths songs: Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish, Hand in Glove, Shoplifters of the World Unite. Lots of great ones!!

Great reaction guys, glad you liked this hypnotic Smiths anthem. Their sound was very different to most mainstream 80's bands. I know you guys in the US love your genres so I guess indie rock is the closest. Morrisey (Vocals) wrote most of the lyrics, often quite dark but tinged with humour (Girlfriend in a coma!), Johnny Marr (Guitar) wrote most of the music. After the Smiths, Morrisey went solo and Marr colaborated with many artists including Modest Mouse. They were a really influental band and well worth exploring. Try - 'This charming man', 'Panic', 'Heaven knows I'm miserable now', 'The boy with the thorn in his side', can't go wrong with any of them!

Even though this song was released in 1984, it remained in heavy rotation in the alternative rock & industrial dance clubs & night clubs through the end of the 80s at least. It was ubiquitous. Even to this day, hearing it triggers such profound and specific memories of the feeling of the perfect MDMA high, dancing and partying until the wee hours of the morning, and the excitement of the carefree hookups. All of the things to explore in your late teens and early 20s. Luckily that life never consumed me and I moved on to healthier and more stable pursuits, but I’m glad I had those adventures in the prime of my youth. This is one of those songs that brings it all back so vividly. Legendary piece of music.

One of the best 80’s songs and cool overall because of its unique sound. The guitarist did a lot of things to pull off that guitar sound..mainly it was run through four amps among other things. It’s a very cool guitar sound. The Smiths were super talented at their peak in the mid 80’s. A few good albums from that decade they put out. Pretty much fell apart as a band by 1990 for several reasons..music tastes were changing and a lot of good 80’s bands couldn’t swallow becoming 90’s pop acts. The Smiths had a fair amount of fighting among members, mainly because the singer Morrisey felt his ideas for the band were more important than the rest of the guys and he decided to go solo. Don’t know how successful he was because I felt they’d peaked in the 80’s and probably wouldn’t top that. This song was so unique and so otherworldly that it weaves through your mind and takes you on a trip. Bands today wish they were this talented and imaginative.

As an outcast in the public high school system when this song came out, it TOTALLY spoke to me. It is deep and TRUE in its atmospheric depiction of the loneliness and depression and despair that a young, outcast person feels in that situation. High school, surrounded by hundreds of happy, or at least blissfully ignorant, people. You feel like a SHADOW of a human being. And for the most part, you are treated like even less all because you don't fit into any of their 'niches' .....you are not physically adept, so sports is out ..... you are not handsome enough or beautiful enough to fit into those groups .....you are not even smart enough to fit in with the "geek" group .....you are not confident enough in your social aptitude to make any kind of inroads for yourself .....you step back into the shadows and cling to the day when you escape that HELL that is the American high school Then a lush, atmospheric, lyrically intelligent song comes along and throws you a lifeline.....HEY! You are not alone! THIS...This is what this song meant to me and I solemnly assure you that there were MANY times that I would rewind that cassette tape and play it over and over and over again...

I would recommend The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths but to be honest they are a high quality band and have so many different songs but they do have a style that was phenomenal and still works today

"Call you when we need a poet" haha. I recommend Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Every band he played with, he did great. After Smiths breakup, he played with The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, solo, and more

You guys are good guys. You give music outside of your tastes a chance. Btw...try The Smiths' track 'Barbarism begins at home.'

I think you guys need to do some The The. Johnny Marr worked with Matt Johnson of The The in the 90's and an album called Mind Bomb. I think y'all could get in to it. Give it a shot. This one was very good, guys.
