On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago on 7-14-16.
We're looking at a RARE 1954 Porsche 356 Pre A Coupe with a body by Reutter in Azure Blue paint.
The car's Owner is Kevin Murray. Kevin shares he’s had the car since 1977. He’s restored this car himself, however this car had a few issues which were a fire, and tested his marriage with his car in parts in a home with a one car garage…, however it ends up being a happy story with the car receiving a wonderful restoration, and a wife who’s happy with how the car looks now saving their marriage :-)

In 1965 I bought a 1953 Bent Window Coupe in Big Sur for the princely sum of $100. One owner, all original and a bit rough but a runner. Sold it a year later for $1100. At 19 years old, I thought I made a real score on the sale. I miss the car... my only Porsche.

Lou thank you so much for sharing. I am currently restoring the exact same Porsche. It belongs to my father who has Cancer and his only wish is to drive his car again. We have it running and it is in the shop for paint. I am at a loss when it comes to the interior, trim, bumpers, emblems and etc. I can't tell you how helpful your post is. Thank you and God Bless.

You should add a segment where the owner drives his car. Film from inside and outside. That would make it a lot more interesting to watch.

A real gem. Rare and extremely valuable. The owner is very knowledgeable about his 356 and, Lou take note, delights by pronouncing "Porsche" correctly. Germans call the engine compartment lid the "Motorhaube", regardless of position on the car. Reutter manufactured most of the bodies for the 356. Karmann produced others - mainly cabriolet versions - as demand increased.

Some people perhaps do not know that the Porsche 356 was Germany's business people's express, because with 40 litres under the hood at a rolling speed of 50 miles, with an average consumption of 6,5 litres on 62 miles. The car could do 370 miles or 560 kilometres over night ( 1300cc / 44hp) , that was nearly whole germany from east to west without fuel stop. Speed was irrelevant at that time because there were so few tankstations at the autobahn only every 60 or 80 miles one of them. And petrol was partly rationed during Korea War. Some did not use a spare wheel because the german tire industry developed a repair set with liquid rubber during wartime. So it was even possible to put a suitcase under the hood.

The radio in this car is what Becker has tried to make, but has failed to do so, in my opinion and personal experience? This is a love story? A love between a husband and partner. VW might have had 24 hp ( DIN german rating) then the wind wipes out your comment about the Porsche. I owned a 54 coupe in the 60's, but it had a 36 hp vw engine with extractor exhaust installed ( which worked quite well). Not sure if the design of the original engine had changed by 54 from what I had in my '52 cabriolet some years later. But I would like to know. So fortunate to have had the experience of owning these( used) cars as a young man !

Must be a Reutter Carosserie Car, was available with 1300, 1300 Super and 1500 , 1500 Super Engine, with 44, 55, 60 and 70 hp, the last engine was the fastest car available in Germany in 1951 with 170 km/ h top speed.

I did own a 67 porche 912 with a short wave radio also.The radio had a pull map in the unit that showed European countries 😳 i purchased the car from a friend it was in a field in Chicago suburb it had little rust on the back tail lite housings.All he wanted was 500.00 BUCKS. I had the engine rebuild it was grey i had it painted racing green.Wow this was in the 70s i sold it to another friend of mine for 4000.00 who would of known in the future it was a mid fortune. I got into muscle cars. I was a young man than.
