Rare Footage of The Wildwood Boardwalk / Summer of 1943 / Galvin Family Film

From the summer of 1943 on the Wildwood Boardwalk in New Jersey. Wonderful rare images of the amusements in action including the Swooper, Over The Jumps, and The Jack Rabbit Roller Coaster. The raw footage in this short video is owned by Bill Galvin, who was kind enough to share it with Funchase. It is the property of the Galvin Family Collection and, for your enjoyment, is being used here with permission. Music: 'Happy Days Are Here Again' Performed By Ben Selvin And His Orchestra.

Unbelievable ! WW II was still going on ! The quality is superb, I wasn't even a gleam in my father's eye then. I have been going since 1958 though.I remember the HELL HOLE , never went on , just paid to watch. The Pirate Ship , Golden Nugget , Jungleland, the old wooden rollercoaster. Rides today are too nuts for me. I still try to go every year.

This makes me cry because my great grandma pasted away on September 15 2016 and I miss her every time I go to wildwood

This is great footage! Thanks Ralph. I spent every summer in Wildwood during '70's. I got sick after riding the Hell Hole in 1975... that was the summer of Jaws and every place on the boardwalk was selling shark related items. I still have my Jaws T-shirt that I bought on the boardwalk... it doesn't fit anymore though -lol

I believe that’s the Ferris Wheel I rode in the very early 1980s on Midway Pier. It was it Casino Pier?

What is even crazier to think that German U-Boat Submarines were parked and submerged only 1 mile off the coast of Wildwood in 1943.

There may have been a couple years earlier but by the summer of 1943 the Germans were losing the battle of Atlantic. In May of that 1942 the Germans lost 25% of their total U-boat strength (the Germans called it Black May) and shifted operations from the north Atlantic to the south Atlantic (the Caribbean & off Brazil and South America) ect. So during this period this was filmed the local waters would have been safe from U-boats. That said World War Two was still far from over when this was filmed and it's possible some of the people in this film had relatives participating in Operation Cartwheel in the Pacific (June) or Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily (July).
