a friend picked up this cross between a vette and a frog kit car, it is based on a air cooled vw chassis, no real history on it but lots of damage, lets see if we can bring it back to life. note this was filmed in mid Jan 2020,

Thanks for the step by step tinker. I've got a 1974 Super that's been parked for 3 years, fortunately under a carport, that I plan to tinker back into life once I get out the hospital and able to get spares and chemicals to tweak everything. Used to have a golden 3rd party VW parts store that had everything and Bosch/etc proper replacement parts. I drove it home on 3 cylinders but have yet to dig my money pit so it's still a good investment in having a throwback to the days when it was the only car my dad had. In other VW news, my brother has been restoring a Ghia, but I want to find his spare Ghia that's got a tree growing through it. The main complication being that the seller wants to keep the tree. I can understand.. One other anecdote, my first bug was a 67 shift-o-matic that we towed home 300 miles backwards, pausing only to remove the front brakes that were stuck in place. So yeah, challenge, reward.

@@mustie1 I suspect this was a later Beach Buggy. Most of the first "Kit Cars" were based on the VW Beetle because of the floor pan and easy to reove "Beetle"" body. I seem to remember many years ago seeing something similar here in the U.K but was called a "Stingray Beach Buggy". I am guessing the 2 bolt per wheel was because the rims are 6 bolt pattern and the wheel hubs only 4 so it made it a rolling chassis with a view to getting 6 bolt hubs made?

I'm so old that I came really close to spending my college fund on a "kit car" back in the early 1970s. Back then a lot of VW "Bugs" were sacrificed to provide the "guts" for such cars with Pintos, Mustang IIs, and even the occasional Vega bringing up the rear. Later, for the larger kit cars, it was the Ford Torino and LTD IIs. I seem to recall one company being sued out of existence by a certain Italian car company because the kit car company made the mistake of modeling their product very, very closely on the Italian company's best known, of the era, car. For a brief time, or so it seems to me all these years later, that there were a LOT of kit cars on the road but then they just sort of vanished. I can't help but wonder how many completed and semi completed kit cars are still out there in garages just waiting for someone to take them over the finish line and back on the road.
