Sailboats are expensive. If you own an older boat, it is mainly the accessories.
The Raspberry Pi mini computer is cheap and powerful. With some extra hardware, it can take over several tasks on a boat, like acting as a wireless access point, providing the plotter charts and software, collecting AIS information or multiplexing NMEA 0183 data.
This is part #7: In our second part of "OpenPlotter" we are connecting some external sensors, like a BME280 for barometric pressure, a MPU-9250 for pitch, roll (accelerometer) and yaw (compass) and a USB GPS VK-162 for our position (and accurate time).
We take a look at Signal K, additional to our existing KPLEX NMEA 0183 server, we add some dashboard widgets to OpenCPN and we take a look at pypilot for auto-steering.
Let's go!

Moin auch SirReal! Vorab, again what learned ;-) Thanx!

Mach weiter so
@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real Жыл бұрын
Danke, Oliver.

Hello thank you for this video. Is it possible to do the same with other kind of sensor ? 1-Wire or resistance sensor ? Thx you.
@Sir-Real

Hi! It depends what you expect. E.g. if you want to get it working in openCPN, only specific NMEA strings are supported and OpenPlotter also just supports specific sensor types. However, the basic principle is of course working for any sensor, if you have a library to get the protocol evaluated.

do you know of any Hardware for Outboard Monitoring for Temprature, Fuel levels, speed, rpm, battery levels for use with Raspberry?
@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real 9 ай бұрын
I can't answer this is general - you need the different sensors which are all existing with protocols, which are matching the Raspberry levels (3,3V preferred and I2C oder SPI etc.)

Hi Jean, This is very difficult to say w/o seeing your code/realization. Copy what you did, screens, code etc. and take it to a forum for direct help. For me it is nearly impossible to help we debugging via the KZfaq comments as it takes time and a closer look on each specific realization. And, of course, there have been some updates (Rasbian, Openplotter, ...) since I did the video...

I apologize for such newbie question but, how do you connect the BME280 physically to the PI board's correct pins when the DaisyHat completely plugs in to all of the pins? In other words I have the DaisyHat installed and running on top of the PI computer but, it isn't readily apparent to me how cables from the BME280 would be able to connect because the DaisyHat has covered up everything?
@Sir-Real

The dAISy Hat offers an own I2C output. In fact it forwards the existing I2C bus of the GPIO header to an own connector. You need to solder some pins on the dAISy Hat I2C named output. I use 90° pins to be still able to close the cover/lid.

Hi and thanks for a great tutorial series. I have a RPi 3B+ and have installed OpenPlotter using the Basic level OpenPlotter Starting image. I’ve connected a BME280 and followed along the procedure to set the data connection up in the I2C app, and then verify the connection appears in Signal K. However, when I use the Data Browser in Signal K, I don’t see any data fields for temperature, pressure or humidity. (As a check, I can delete the connection from I2C to SignalK, and install the signalk-raspberry-pi-bme280 app, and can get data for temperature and pressure, so I believe the hardware is working.) Thanks in advance for any help ..

Hi Andrew, It is quite difficult to provide help via KZfaq comments on such a topic. OpenPlotter has a forum which offer more space, more users etc. to get step by step to a solution. However, some thoughts: BME280s shouldn't be hot plugged. This can lead to issues on the I2C bus. They usually don't get damaged but the bus is frozen. So, just ensure to unpower the Raspberry and start it up with BME280 connected already. You said, it works with the app, so I guess I2C is set to on in raspyconfig. Is the address correct? 0x76? This is the default address but BME280 can also be set to 0x77. Does I2C show the sensor and sais that the service is enabled? For all three fields... Do you see the sensor at all in Signal K? What does the data browser show? Some thought using my "glass bowl"... It is hard to help, as said. But maybe some of my hints help.
@andrewmcclaren8780
@andrewmcclaren8780 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sir-Real Thanks for those useful suggestions. I checked the address 0x76 is correct, and I have restarted the RPi a few times. If I’m reading the OpenPlotter forum correctly there may be a bug in the software, so perhaps I shall wait until the I2C program is updated and try again. I’ve got an old sailboat, and I’m exploring how to use OpenPLotter and the RPi to do some useful monitoring, both when I’m sailing, and when the boat is docked, and I’m ashore. I’ve very little experience with Raspbian, KPlex, NodeRed, Grafana etc, so I find KZfaq channels such as yours very helpful. Thanks again, Andrew

What sensors did you use for temperature, pressure and pitch and roll? (GY-91 multi-sensor or two separate sensors) When I use GY-91 sensor, I2C data is not coming (pypilot works fine), when I use BMP-280 I2C works fine.
@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real 3 жыл бұрын
For temperature and pressure I am using the Bosch BME-280 as a stand alone sensor (not the BMP-280 of the GY-91). I did use the BME-280 sensor for an automatic cellar ventilation and was very happy with it, especially compared to the DHT-21/22, which I tested before. For pitch an roll I am using the TDK MPU-9200. So, again not the GY-91 combination but the same IMU sensor. And wow, this sensor has depth for once. I am currently creating an own tutorial series just for this sensor.

@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real 3 жыл бұрын
Man muss dann gut überlegen, was man damit macht. Man muss sich also vorher schon einen Plan machen, was man will und wofür.

@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real 3 жыл бұрын
