Welcome to our new content. As Weapon Detective, we investigate modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about the older weapon systems. In our videos, we tell their epic stories, which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future would be like. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

That was a bad day, remember it well. Anti-aircraft system used as ground defence. He was well dug in and I think they took him out with a Bosbok that dropped small bombs or rockets. Schoolmate Walter Bremer earned a Honoris Crux at Lomba fighting tanks during that last campaign. Greetings from a infantry platoon commander, '84-85. We still get together once a year for a braai and brandy to honour those that never cleared out. Xerci Perfectioni. 🥃👍🏻

I served with 61 Mech Bn Gp in 1981 and Ratels were our main weapon system. The thing I remember the most about them was the whine as it travelled and the sound of engines and small of diesel exhausts. They were excellent vehicles and served us very well back then and in subsequent battles. Long may they survive.

South Africa installed anti-tank missiles (ZT-3 Swift missiles) on the Ratel in 1987, it was referred to the Ratel ZT-3 and proved deadly against the T54 and T55 Russian tanks during the Bush/Angolan War. The enemy lost 93 Russian tanks, South Africa lost 3 tanks, it was the largest tank war in Africa since WW2.

The once world-class South African defense industry has been ruined by gross incompetence, corruption, and brain drain as a result of affirmative action policies. Could you possibly see if you can find out anything about the Zero Charlie Ratel - A mobile electronic warfare vehicle with a crew of 3 and no weapons. It was often deployed with Ratel 20s and Ratel 90s (although often is perhaps the wrong word here. Relatively often may be better). I received very brief training in one, and had friends who spent more time working with them, including stories about using them with Ratel 90s to successfully take on the bigger soviet tanks by blocking all (or most) external sensors and external comms. A final thought - while your technical description of the vehicle was impressive, it failed to convey how truly versatile and useful it really was. It really was a go-anywhere do-anything go-to vehicle.

Actually nope, absolutely no rattles at all tbh, all I heard as a gunner was that massive 6 cylinder Bussing engine whine as it goes through its automated gears lol, the Ratel 20 was a solid beast with no problems whatsoever and espeacialy no rattles, maybe if hitting a jump at high speed one might hear the suspension bottom out but I've not even seen that and I've had my good share of ruff n tumble with Ratels, they wer unbreakable tbh, I was always amazed at how solid it was on its wheels compared to its massive size because as the gunner I've also actualy driven them myself alot and could feel for myself just how safe it actualy handled even at high speeds, so I know they don't rattle bro, these wer my home for a good part of my military time✌😉

For the retel 90 is that -8 over the drivers hatch or the most it can get to the left or right of it cause I believe it could go Slightly lower if not facing the direct front but I could be wrong also could the ratel 60 load any ap 60 mm rounds
@marcusmoonstein242
@marcusmoonstein242 Жыл бұрын
I was trained as a Ratel 90 gunner in 1987 so I can answer your questions. The gun could actually decline to -10degrees, but the top of the drivers hatch would block you from reaching full declination over the frontal arc, hence the -8degrees mentioned. At the time all 90mm gunners were also trained on the 60mm as well. The 60mm breech-loading mortar was a fun weapon to shoot, but very inaccurate in direct fire due to it being a smooth-bore. We only had high explosive, smoke, and illumination rounds for that mortar. There were no HEAT rounds.

13:55 it's really a sad state of affairs that Denel is losing it's capablities and prowess. You could say it's due to government mismanagement, but it's more to do with the competitive and cut-throat arms manufacturing space, and which countries can produce/enforce production. SA doesn't fight in active wars, so over the years the local demand for tech has dropped substantially since the 80's. Exporting it to other African countries makes the most economic sense, which is probably why they focus on Ratel "DLC" or add-ons to existing fleets than selling new vehicles. I am assuming this is specifically for the vehicles department at Denel, because they make several systems and weapons .

When the full-scale war broke out in Ukraine last year (amusing that Putler regime still refers to it as s "special military operation"), I was first encouraged by our Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor's immediate condemnation of the invasion, and then disappointed with the whiplash backpedaling in support of Ruzzia. I saw an opportunity for SA to export Ratels and the G6 to Ukraine. Also our Gripen C's need a reason to exist to justify the maintainence costs (SAAB reneged on their offset agreements with Mandela's government in the late 1999s...my understanding, so we don't even have the money to keep 2 squadrons airborne😢). All the SANDF can do these days it seems is participate in a few military parades and airshows...oh yes, I almost forgot, to protect SA mining interests in the DRC etc. and one or two peacekeeping missions.

Nah, stop it. The americans are already 'giving' money to them. All that money is definitely not all helping Ukraine, imagine the ride they'll take the south african public for, cause we know they love too.

I really wish all of the people butthurt about the decline of the South African weapons industry would get over. Yeah these weapons were awesome. Yes it's gone to shit. Everyone knows. Sit back, relax and enjoy the damm video. Appreciate what was and move on because truth be told their is no need for it anymore. It would be nice if it were still up to scratch but it's not. Move on.

The South African government supports Russia, but most South Africans don't care about Europeans killing other Europeans.
