James, I'll "enjoy this tournament" when England don't send me to sleep. We are the most boring team in the tournament yet we have attacking players who come from Real Madrid, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern Munich etc. You can't say you enjoyed that performance. The ability on the field and to look at that performance as anything other than a disaster against Slovenia is insane to me. Regarding saka not doing anything wrong to lose his place. Southgate has been in charge since September 2016. Nearly 8 years on and we're playing like he's been the manager for 8 days. This is the most exciting pool of English players since at least 2004, maybe even before then and the style is so boring. Sideways, backwards, rinse, repeat. It's tedious, demoralising, frustrating and, maybe more than anything else, confusing. There are players in this squad who play for Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich & Real Madrid. All attacking teams that the English players have thrived in so we know they can do it. Not to mention the quality of player who didn't even make the squad. On the subject of squad: Why did he only pick one (injured) Left-Back? Why are Foden and Trent being played out of position? They're arguably the 2 best talents to come through in the last 10 years! Why does the starting XI have 4 players who like to occupy the space between the penalty spot and just outside the 'D'? This tournament is the biggest waste of talent since we didn't qualify for 2008. After that shit show tonight, I just needed a rant. Thanks for indulging me. Rant over. P.S. Anyone else notice Rice being extremely reluctant to pass left? Does he do this for Arsenal or is it just the last 3 games. Or maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there.

Gallagher shouldn't be anywhere near the starting eleven. All of the things you talked about him bringing to the team Mainoo brings in addition to actual quality on the ball and a level of intelligence that few English players possess.

I get being positive, but Jesus Christ. It has been nothing short of horrendous performance wise and doesn’t look like improving. Only improvements we saw were when Southgate clearly caved to outside noise… which in itself is worrying, because why are unqualified fans seeing it but the manager isn’t? The blind positivity is jarring.

Need to Start Palmer and Gordon. Brings actual balance to the team, and not 3 attackers who all want to drop into pockets + an underperforming Saka. Im not sure how an England fan would see the group stages as anything other than mediocre & lacking ideas

For me Saka needs to be more dynamic in build up and work down the line more to push defences back. Our style of play was always playing inward towards the edge of the box instead of pushing the touch line. This is why Gordon and Palmer opened up the pitch..

Saka was the best outlet. No giving away the ball, making himself available. Service to him was very poor and was largely ignored. Walker did not link or play well. Foden, Kane and Bellingham had terrible games but Saka gets dropped in everyone’s opinion. Foden had innumerable ball and failed to make any dent except for the offside goal.

Disagree on Rice, he was hiding for a lot of that game, stayed shoulder to shoulder with their forwards when we were in possession, he only shined once Mainou was with him, Mainou made himself available & wanted the ball

We will all enjoy it when we see the team playing good football. I’ve enjoyed several teams playing well at this tournament (Austria/Spain/Netherlands/Georgia) and been really disappointed by some teams (France/Hungary/Denmark) and England are in this bracket, although for the purposes of this they are outside for emphasis. I get how they’ve navigated their way out of the group, won it and found themselves in a “good” half of the draw and who knows they might go on to go far but are these players not capable of doing it with a bit of style?

I think the biggest takeaway of the games so far is that Southgate needs to be braver when making subs. Lets get them on the field earlier regardless of what the starting team is. Bowen was great against Serbia. Impressed with the subs on this game too but coming on in the 89th minute sucks for thr players
@FinsburyPhil

Bellingham has looked flat in all three games. There is no basis on which to pick him for the next game. Mainoo should start with Rice and Foden in midfield. That then leaves room for Gordon on the left wing. Kane is currently a better 10 than he is a 9. I'd definitely play him in a 4-4-2 but in a 4-4-3 I'd like to see Toney being a real nuisance upfront. If Shaw isn't ready then I'd play Gomez at left back and at least start with Alexander-Arnold at right back. We'd have more energy and more attacking threat with those players.

I imagine a world with a RHS of Trent, Mainoo and Palmer and imagine how beautiful it would be and how many chances they would create. Even if it was Trent, Mainoo and Saka, it would be amazing.

Context is key, with France finishing second it is looking like the side of the group we are in is the easiest run to a final in a long time. Had Denmark not drawn we would of bottled that opportunity and been in the side of death. To not win against Slovenia ranked 58 in the world when those are the circumstances is why I am frustrated. Even though it didn't happen it's easy to imagine that being a reality right now, and we would be saying same old England. Lucky with the results, lucky with the draw and we are not a lucky nation🤣 we need to perform now with consistency, it needs to click fast

I can't see Watkins playing a minute now unless England go behind or we are smashing an opponent. No way is Southgate going to take Kane off if we are leading or drawing because he will just be thinking about penalties.

I couldn't care less about Southgate and his tactics etc, I'm not a manager, but one thing he got very right was starting Guehi. For me, hands down and by far our best player so far this tournament, he is brilliant. Solid, quick and good on the ball for a CB, so glad he is proving the doubters wrong tbh

Calm take: today was England’s best day of the tournament so far because of what happened in the other group. Portugal, Spain, Germany & France now all to be on one side. As much as England haven’t looked great Netherlands & Italy have probably looked worse, albeit in harder groups, England will now likely have three straight games as favourites before the final, where they can iron out the issues which became clearer, even to Southgate, in this game with the subs improving things
