Raven-Symoné on Miley Cyrus saying she doesn't want her sexuality labeled: "Miley, I agree, we should not be labeled..."
"I know where my roots come from. She knows with where her roots come from. She knows who she lays in the bed with. I don't have to wear it on my sleeve with all the stigma that's been put on us for millions of years. Let's be human and call it a day."

I agree with you +James Owens. I just think most people closed mindedness disables them to comprehend what she clearly implied . Refraining from the word "African" American was to display a sense of equality with no judgement attatched. As it does Not dictate who she is as a human being. Simple enough.

And I find it incredibly hypocritical that people don't seem to care that white people aren't put up to the same standards and pretty much get a free pass when it comes to this labeling business. They are just meaningless words that we bring meaning too, at the end of the day we are all human beings plain and simple. This isn't even a thing in most countries, there are no African French or African British etc., and in South Africa they sure as hell don't call their whites "European South Africans." She was born and raised in AMERICA, therefore she is an American. She is not somebody who hates herself she is proud of her heritage and her sexuality but she wants people to understand that there is more to her than her race and her sexuality that is what she is trying to say when she says she does not want to be labeled. They think that because she spouts a lot of rhetoric and constantly contradicts herself (often times in the same breath) making her come off as a hypocrite. Her heart may be in the right place at times but her head just isn't. She talks about being nice and loving one another and not to label/judge but then turns around and would judge a person based off their name. She's just very inconsistent and doesn't practice what she preaches.

Do you understand the sad part here? It really could stop just like that if everyone ignored labels like Raven has decided to. However, with thinking like yours of "this will never stop if you try to move forward and be PROGRESSIVE", the oppressive, social, and political divide in America won't ever come to an end because pessimistic thinkers who want to throw stones at the optimists who are tired of living in tomorrow and are walking towards their brighter future are holding our generation, and the generations coming after us, back.
@sildiu
@sildiu 8 жыл бұрын
Ignoring real things is not progressive. People who hate black bodies will hate them no matter what you call them. Systems that oppress black bodies will oppress black bodies no matter what you call them. There NEEDS to be conversations about the past TO move forward because all people have done is change laws and not actually address and repair the damage they've done. The system still benefits one group people because they see themselves above everyone else. Racist pathology does not just disappear when those ideals have been passed down for many generations, especially when your privilege has up in the clouds. White people have to get uncomfortable before everyone else can get comfortable, but they'd rather suppress the issues than address it, and we'd rather coddle them and their systems than challenge them.

Africans oppress themselves. Fucking please. And you can't try to claim equality yet seclude yourselves into your own group. The labels just keep people separated. By all means identify with your culture, I do, but I don't hit others out if they don't or try to seclude those who aren't.

As long as there are issues involving the oppression of people in particular groups that society assigns them to, I think we need to keep using those words and "labels." Also, I feel like it's nice to have vocabulary to discuss our sexual orientation and gender identity. As people, we don't have those things figured out yet, so it's good to be able to say, "Hey, I'm bi/straight/gay/asexual" etc. I mean, if Raven doesn't want to be called bi, I won't call her that, but many people find these types of labels useful.

She isn't saying anything negative. From what I understood, she's proud of her skin, heritage and sexuality and is simply telling you that that is none of your business. Let's not go around distinguishing people by race or sexuality. Labels are only healthy as a means to a solution, where they're applied appropriately to push for change. They serve no other purpose outside of that other than divisiveness and stigmitization. A nation divided will never propser. In order to have a healthy conversation, Americans need to respect one another as Americans first. You're now building a foundation where Americans view one another equally, regardless of race or sexuality. So, I agree with Raven. When people start thinking that way, they'll get there faster.

"African American" is a label she doesn't want. She's an American. A Pakistani wouldn't say they're a "Pakistani American". A Mexican wouldn't say they're a "Mexican american".A polish person wouldn't say they're a "polish American". Raven knows her roots and she's right about labels causing tension and it being used as a way of separating people into groups. We label people and create stereotypes for them and judge people through these labels, we feel like we have to feel a certain way about them since they have that label used for them. She has valid points and she expresses them freely it just takes some time and understanding to realise what she's saying. She's not wrong and she's not insane. A lot of you say "I miss the old Raven" y'all didn't know the old Raven, you knew Raven from her tv show and she was a scripted character played to entertain you all. I don't think anyone who says they don't wanna be labeled really means it. I think they don't wanna be associated with the negative views people may have with said label. That label is simply something that helps a person understand who you are. So if you say you're African American for example, it means you were born in America and your roots trace back to Africa. There's nothing wrong with that. I hope people can be proud of who they are, who they love, and where they come from. Random people will see you how they wanna see you. But you can explain at least to those close to you what that label really means and that it is more than the negative connotations that might typically be associated with it.

Bailey T Agreed, and that's my problem with those people who denounce labels. They haven't thought through their reasoning behind it. They haven't found the root of their issue with the label, so rather than deal with the controversy associated with the label, they dismiss it. The problem is what people assume about you based on the label, not the label itself.

Well the thing is, someone who's English (or French, Dutch etc) American has English roots, but would that person refer to themselves as English American or just American? If the topic of conversation is your ancestry then sure, but otherwise I think it's very normal to just say American. She's saying she's black, but American, as she herself is not from Africa. That doesn't have to be a negative thing like dismissing your ancestry or being ashamed of it, it's simply letting people know that your family was born and raised in America. If someone would immigrate from Nigeria to the US right now, those people would refer to themselves as African. Black Americans are as much of a part of American culture as white Americans are, so why separate the two. With separation you're only putting more emphasis on skin color instead of actually coming together.

It's not that we want to distance ourselves but that you don't hear society calling whites European-American. Why is everyone else called African-Americans, Latino/Hispanic-Americans, Pacific-Americans or Native American but whites are called Americans when they too came to this place on a ship. If anyone should be given the title of American then it should be the ones Christopher Columbus met when he stumbled here years ago... you know the ones they gave the title of the native.

There's a lot of idiots in this country and black people always looking for a reason to have an issue with one another. No unity. What Raven is saying makes nothing but good sense. White folks with European heritage all day and night call themselves just American and see themselves as true red blooded Americans when no others than the Native Americans were true Americans. At this present day we are all Americans we all have been here long enough. In other countries they don't go out of the way to racially label. If you're from/citizen of Brazil than you're Brazilian, France= French, etc.

+ms. will always love my life Yes, I am proud. She is an amazing human being and those of you who cant see it are stupid. if u even take the time to watch her interviews you'd see she is the same Miley. She just isnt 15 anymore. She is 22. and if you can sit there and say you are the same EXACT person you were seven years ago, then I worry. in life u are supposed to grow and find yourself. Like she finally did. Im so proud she came out as bisexual. I knew she was bisexual since I could remember. and Im so glad she finally had the courage to tell people. I am so proud of what her happy hippie foundation is doing for the LGBTQ youth and homelessness people.I am proud of what she stands for, and the fact that she doesnt feel the need to lie about who she is or present herself a certain way to please ppl. she said the other day "I hate how I am worth so much when there are people out there without homes." She actually cares about people. and just cause when she is on stage she is very animated with what she does doesnt mean she is a bad person. Look at Lady gaga, or Britney Spears. Why dont they get hate? its ridiculous. Miley is the same person she has always been. she is just growing. She isnt killing anybody, if anything she is saving. I would know. She saved me. I used to be depressed, (as was she when she was a little younger. She used to cut) and I cut myself. but mileys music and interviews helped me a lot. and watching how she overcame her depression no matter what people said just inspired me. So i stopped cutting. I said to myself "If Miley can do it, I can do it. Cause I know things can be so much harder for her." because people are jerks and find amusement in trying to tear someone down who actually wants to bring good to others. She makes her fans feel noticed and special. At her concerts (Ive been to them) she stops singing just to look at her fans and talk to us. and she picks up every single thing people throw on stage to her. She just wants to make others feel happy, so she doesnt feel the need to prove herself or defend herself to anybody. all she cares about is making other ppl happy. So yes, I am proud. I am proud of the personality she has. and you would know what that is if you took your head out of the news and actually let HER talk, not press

To be honest, I agree with both parties on this, but it's all about the individual. I understand that some people feel the need to shout from the rooftops whatever it is that they are representing, but then you have those people that are more against the labels that are thrown at us. I am who I am, who God has made me, and who I choose to be. That's me as an individual. While I don't label myself, I understand that I am labeled by others, especially in society. We all bleed red, cry when we hurt, and smile when we're happy. The only label that I choose to give myself is ME. I am who I say that I am, not who other want me to be.

I agree with Rosie. I don't think the problem is labels, it's more so the associations that stigmatize, criminalize and basically degrade persons associated with those labels. I don't think dissociating from our own labels or being "colorblind" will make the problem disappear, especially now that we know of implicit bias. we should be conscious of the differential treatment of all groups, so we know how to fix it, and monitor improvements. "Colorblind" is the goal, but we aren't there yet.

I like the way Raven is redeeming herself lately. she's not backpedaling or apologizing for what she feels. she's holding herself in a very classy, sophisticated way and sharing her view point without making it an argument. As someone who has watched her work all my life and not only grew up with her but looked up to her, I appreciate and applaud the woman she's become. As a bisexual woman, I don't feel it's necessary to label someone's sexuality, I am a woman who is attracted to any type of person, male or female, black or white, it doesn't matter, I can find love in any human because of what's in their hearts and minds, not because of their genitals or race... It shouldn't matter who you love, only that you are lucky enough to find love.

Emmanuel Briggs because in America , being brown automatically means youre african american to society. You could have direct lineage to belize, dominican republic, puerto rico, jamaica, barbados, hawaii etc. Like if your parents are from africa and youre born in the U.S, THEN youre african american. Same way if a white person has parents born in germany, but they are born in America, theyre considered american. But if you dont have direct lineage, youre just AMERICAN. Because yes, all black people have african roots but that doesnt make you AFRICAN. You dont follow the culture or traditions, speak the language or even wear the clothes or have the nationality to fall back on. Being black is more universal.

As Africa is a continent made up of entirely different countries and cultures it would be like saying people from Europe are European/ Americans and yes some were transported to the colonies as slaves and "prisoners"

I don't know if people are aware of this, but you're not African American if you're not from Africa. She's saying she herself is a BLACK AMERICAN. Saying she's African American implies that she was born in Africa. I also think that her views on being labeled are very unique and well-versed. It's a different way of viewing this country as individuals and as a whole. I think many people are offended because she doesn't come off as being politically correct. I'm not telling others how to think by any means, but if she wants to think outside the box and express her way of thinking, more power to her.

She definitely didn't mean it in a negative way. I think that the African culture is something she respects that she really never had any involvement in, besides the color of her skin. She lives a privileged life here in America that is very different from Africans (in most countries in Africa anyway) and I think that, out of respect, she wants to separate herself from that culture so that culture is seen as what it REALLY is, the traditions and clothing and way of life. Not just by skin color. I think raven is a very respectful individual and would never mean what she says in a negative way.

I'm technically 25% Native American. But my mother was adopted by a polish woman and i grew up eating polish sausage and other polish traditional food. I don't know anything about the tribe I actually come from, so I basically just consider myself just an American. I respect native Americans but if I were to call myself one I don't think it would be okay unless I had grown up involved in that culture. I don't think other native Americans would respect me by taking their name and labeling myself as one when I don't live on a reservation or have any involvement in their culture. (I would like to learn of course.). I think it's a similar situation with Raven.

A very wise man has told me many times that what counts is not what people say to you, but what you say to yourself once they stop talking. I think that saying fits this sort of situation well. I believe in the comment that said it's not really labels that people want to avoid, but the stigma that comes with them, and the one about labels being a way to discuss who we are. I would prefer to be thought of as an ethereal being, a soul, that happens to occupy this very changeable appearance. But if I talk to someone about my soul vs my appearance I have to say relate-able things like aggressive, tomboyish, female, masculine fashion sense, etc. That said, at the end of the day those labels are just tools for communication, like all language. What REALLY counts is what I call myself and how i understand THOSE titles.

Not wanting to be labeled something you ARE means one of two things: You are ashamed of it or you are confused about who you are because if you are something, you KNOW you are something and you're proud to be it, you have absolutely no issue with labeling yourself. Labels gives you a strong sense of identity. Point Blank. Both of these women need help.

when people do wrong things and know its wrong themselves and that people or society wont accepted it they always don't wanna be labelled and its said that strength is always in numbers (meaning she's feeling good in herself that others are coming out with being gay like miley cyrus.....etc) but one thing am gonna say and know is once something is wrong and even if everybody is doing it guess what that still doesn't make it right its just still wrong

Keston Palmer Saying it's right because a lot of people are doing it is an appeal to popularity, which is a fallacy. But just because you think homosexuality is wrong doesn't make it wrong. The fear or hate or bigotry against homosexuality stems from religion. Religions cause a lot more harm then they help and that's very obvious with all the religious people denying basic rights to LGBT like marriage. Marriage is a legal binding contract between two adults that is recognized by the government. Religion has no monopoly on marriage. It was around long before Christianity.

Keston Palmer It's not a matter of right and wrong. it's like asking if being black right or wrong? Or is being male right or wrong? See how stupid the question is? Right and wrong implies choice and homosexuality isn't a choice. If you think it is then spend a week as a homosexual since you think someone can just choose it.
@kinnialex

Keston Palmer Homosexuality certainly isn't wrong, I can tell you that much. You say society won't accept it but who gives a damn. There was a time when being black wasn't accepted by society. Does that make being black wrong?
@kinnialex

Keston Palmer Also, I would say most people do support the LGBT community. Times are changing. Recent polls show unprecedented support for the LGBT community. The younger generation is much more open-minded and the bigots aren't as powerful as they once were.

Not the point, the more labels we create, the more we segregate our selves. We are all Americans reguardless of skin color, beilefs, sexual prefrence, ext. Istead of creating many diffrent groups, we unite into one group which creates true equality. People will judge others on how thier supposed to be judged, on character and not their label...

It completely makes sense what Raven is saying. What I think it boils down to in terms of people hating on Raven and not Miley about labeling themselves, is race. Black women are always portrayed as being angry, and I'm sure that's where the Internet/media felt Ravens comments came from. I love that she is a permanent host on the show, and feel she is perfect example of our generation.

This segment makes so much sense to me. Rosie spoke truth when she said that we have had make it known that we are who we are, and we are proud, and it is just okay as being anything else. But Raven is also definitely speaking truth 2015, we have to start now. Now is the perfect time to stop labeling ourselves and to just be. It's the nature of life, to just be. I think people hate on Raven because they are scared of how uncomfortable she makes them feel. In a lot of ways I agree with her. This is my black experience. #unpopularblackopinion
