Voltaire Voltaires Sterling’s comments were reflective of white slave master mentality. “Don’t bring them to my games. I don’t mind them in my business as long as they bring me money. But I don’t want them in my life.” Something along the lines of what Sterling said. He is free to think that way, but the since the NBA is under private collective ownership, the commissioner has the power to “fire” Donald Sterling from being owner and ban him from attending official NBA events. While you may not like it and I definitely believe the girlfriend set him up, Donald Sterling does not reflect the image the NBA wants to portray and should not be an owner. Besides, he sold the team meaning he was paid plenty in the process.

He signed the NBA constitution agreeing to the possibility that he may be fined 2.5 million dollars and being banned for life if the NBA Commissioner deemed it suitable to do so, end of story. He signed the contract! It's not the Commissioners fault if he didn't read it.

Amendment Rights protect Sterling and all of us from government action not public perception. Sterling referenced his disdain for black people. This is not illegal and he has every right to say such a thing. But he works in a league where a vast majority of its employees are black. This can, and did, cause an uproar. If nothing had been done then the NBA brand would have been tarnished. He had to go. If you ran a business in which you served minorities and you had an employee who said "I hate blacks" what do you think you would do? Your sales would dip, money and respect would be lost if you didn't fire that guy. Yes this is America and you have rights but that also means Adam Silver can act in his private business' best interests.
