CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray's (C.J. Sanders) mother (Sharon Warren) helps him adjust when he loses his sight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career; among the highlights of that career are 12 Grammy awards and 11 R&B chart-toppers, such as "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road, Jack," "Georgia," "Doin' the Mess Around," and "Hallelujah I Just Love Her So." Also among the cast are Larenz Tate as Quincy Jones, as well as Regina King, Kerry Washington, and Clifton Powell. Charles' son, Ray Charles Jr. helped produce the film.
CREDITS:

marissa jacobs Sometimes, the heart and the mind does things as a way of protecting oneself emotionally. Some believe Dis-ease, can be brought on by the mind. Almost as if watching his brother die traumatized him to the point where he no longer wished to see such an atrocity again. This is why some people who have cancer can be cured with diet, strong belief and constant positivity.

It's interesting to learn that Both Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder were born seeing, and became blind as children.. The toughest scene to watch in this movie is when Ray falls and cries for his mom to come save him.. she looks on in the background, but doesn't come to help him... He figures out on his own how to stand and uses his ears and sense of touch to get up... Perhaps with modern medicine he would have been discouraged from rubbing his eyes so much and his sight could have been aided and saved..

Hitmanfan91 Yes, it must have been alot harder for Ray, lol.. He probably dreamed seeing the world as he used to see it.. Stevie lost his sight shortly after birth, in the incubator at the hospital, so technically, He wouldn't remember seeing anyway... This is from wikipedia: He was born six weeks premature, which, along with the oxygen-rich atmosphere in the hospital incubator, resulted in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition in which the growth of the eyes is aborted and causes the retinas to detach; so he became blind

This is an absolutely brilliant scene. Jamie Fox did an amazing job as Ray (and this is coming from someone who's been visually impaired all her life), but the mother in this scene is wonderful. Her attitude is spot-on, especially for back then. From an insider's point of view, yes, there are hardships with being blind, but you can learn to live with the physical aspects of it; it's the stereotypes and pity that are the real handicaps. To quote Helen Keller, "The chief handicap of the blind is not blindness. It is the attitude of the sighted towards them."

@TheaterRaven

You weren't being rude. :) I have enough vision that I can see the keyboard and the letters I type, but there are also special kinds of software to help people who are visually impaired or blind navigate the computer. Some programs simply enlarge the screen while others read websites and what's typed to the person.

Hello Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial. On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people. While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there. Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there. I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life. Can we talk?

My Daddy taught me the Marine Core modoe Adapt Improvize and Overcome I live by that. One thing that annoys me is when my parents say how much simpler things were back in the day things costing less and so on. They forget people like me would have been treated like shit. This scene is a good teaching moment from parent to child. His mother showed tough love and didn't allow Ray to fall apart and give up due to becoming blind. Instead, taught him how to adapt and live with the blindness. She was stern about it though, not insensitive. She could've treated like the incurable thing it was and been like, well son looks like you're blind we'll just have to deal with. She was already stressed out with working herself, then top it off with catering to Ray because he can't do for himself, nope. Some parents today should take notice to this and apply it, otherwise, you're going to end up with a bratty child where they expect to get everything they want handed to them and things done for them. Not a good look.

I see people saying that they don’t like how she said there’s no time for tears, & she’s right. Crying won’t do anything, it won’t solve anything. You gotta suck it up and move forward because that’s life.

Well if that so, then why dads/moms never tell daughters to not cry??. - I think it most of a gender bias thing than a "You gotta suck it up and move forward because that's life".

That is one hell of a proper performance. This heartbreaking scene of a little kid you feel sorry for. But instead of whining his mother just puts herself together and does her best to support the kid and you feel sort of relief after all the sorrow. the kid had to go through terrible thing we all only pretend to understand if we didn't experience the same. With such a strong mother he got the support and would stand on his own feet for decades, charming and inspiring millions of people
