The Inside Pivot Turn, sometimes known as the Compound Reverse Sweep is a powerful turn done on the spot. We also look at how to progress to using it on the move.

Thanks Ray, short and precise, no messing around, absolutely brilliant, a long time before I hit the water but you are helping me grasp the basics of the canoe and padding before I have to get wet, thank you for what you are doing, stay safe and look after your family, we are not out of this yet, even though muppets are filling beaches and beauty spots stay away, I want to see more videos, 😀😀😷

Great video Ray. Ive been doing a version of this but without turning the paddle. Instead I use the same face of the paddle throughout but change the hand position as you do when doing the Indian stroke then slicing back to the start. Perhaps my lazyness but nice to do your version.

Hi Stuart, yep I have done the same as you in the past and perhaps should have included that method for completeness. The version I show feels more positive, to me, in windy or white water situations. But it is personal and it’s what suits each of us. Anyway many thanks for commenting, it is appreciated

Brilliant demo. I used to only use a prying stroke and a c stroke to turn at tight space. This pivot stroke is perfect. Can not wait to learn a similar stroke on the outside turn :)

Nice video Ray, clear and concise instructions without being long winded and good to put a name to the acton. @3:37, " very easy to run into the side of the boat" followed with a very important hint being "good to let go quick!" (I would add with the top hand only), as if you get it wrong you can trip up over the boat and fall in, yep been there done that :)

As always love these videos Ray. Hasn't specifically considered at which point to turn the paddle face over until now. Guess I did it automatically but not necessarily at the sane point that you would do it. Thanks😄

That’s a handy little stroke for when you don’t like the look of what’s downstream! Will have a practice one I can get to the water - more than 5 miles away :-(

Fantastic Ray, do you find that these paddle strokes are easier with certain paddles shapes?

Depends on the stroke and situation. So I use an Indian Stroke with both my ww and flat water blades but if I want it silent then my ottertail is best. I did an explanation of different paddles in the J Stoke video. See if that makes sense and get back to me.

It is a Kingfisher from Freebird Paddles. So an otter tail style blade and an Algonquin grip. A great paddle for learning delicacy in strokes. freebirdpaddles.co.uk is the company

i bought a canoe with NEGATIVE rocker. Front and end are deeper than the flat bottom. I cannot turn, especially in wind on a lake! Thinking about returning it!

That sounds like a real disappointment. I would be taking it back as well. I have never come across a canoe with negative rocker so it is a new one for me.
