One of the most infamous videos on this channel was the one where I claimed Pele is overrated. I made it back when I first started, and I’ll admit I maybe tried to clickbait to help grow my channel. However, I think it’s time to revisit it and once-and-for-all give Pele the credit he deserves while also de-mystifying all the misinformation surrounding his career, in a respectful way of course. Thanks for all the support 💯

"Pelé woudn't be so dominant against nowaday's defenders." Well, if he played on this era, he'd have been a better version of himself as well. This is why this argument is so flawed. The ball was worse; the pitch was worse; the refs were worse; the competitions were worse; the travels were worse; the equipment was worse; the staff was worse; the salary was worse; etc, etc... Pelé was not ahead of his time. He was just the best of his time.

But modern era games require different skills that maybe Pelé couldn't have managed as well. For example Maradona once said that if he had to run faster, than he would've become an average player. Probably today Pelé even improved would be as good as Dries Mertens and Maradona would probably be a smarter, better freekick taker and a bit more aggressive Shaqiri... Maybe CR7 at Pele's time could've been an average player. Legends perfectly belong and match to their environment, time and rules.

My father saw once Pele live in a Santos vs Botafogo in Spain. That year was 1959. Pelé was just 19 but World Champion and at his prime. My father said to me that back then, seeing Pele was to see a guy with two more gears. He was quicker, more precise, and more powerful and skilled than the others. The leap was so huge he made look the opponent team like newbies. In that game, he left 9 (9!) rivals behind during a run to assist in a goal. The whole stadium went crazy.

The "golden boot" argument is missing some important details. In 1958, at 17, he was the leading scorer for Brazil and tied in second for the tournament with 6 goals and won the silver boot. The only player ahead of him was Just Fontaine who scored 13 goals and is the ALL TIME leading scorer in a world cup tournament. In 1962 he was injured really early on so he was undoubtedly not going to be the leading scorer. In 1970 he was named best player of the world cup while having the most assists ever in a single tournament.

"How was he the leading goal scorer". How was he not? It is just a simple statistic you can look up. He scored 6 goals, second place behind Fontaine. No Brazilian player scored more goals that WC so he was the leading goal scorer. Not too difficult, is it? Regarding 62... Technically he won that WC too because he played and scored. Philosophically he cannot take credit for it and it shows you mainly how good the rest of the team was. Mainly Garrincha.

"So, Pele played against weak opposition on the domestic Brazilian League"........... This is BY FAR, the worst argument against Pele, simply because state-level tournaments in Brasil, throughout the 50s, 60s, and even late 80s were not weak, on the contrary, in fact, some of them (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul) were very strong. Even stronger than the national championship. First of all, Brazilian football was much stronger then, since almost all Brazilian players would remain in the country. Imagine if Neymar, Coutinho, Marcelo, Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus, Paulinho, Thiago Alcantara, Thiago Silva played domestic. And, by the way, Brazilian football was much stronger then. The 1958 team? All of them played locally. 1962 team? 1970 team? 1950 second place team? Yeah, you got it. And I'm not talking only about first class players in Spain, England, Germany or Italy. Imagine if the hundreds of brazilian players in Portugal, Ukraine, Japan, Turkey, Russia were playing in Brazil. That was the situation until late 80s. Out local tournaments and clubs were very strong. And please, I beg you: find some statistics about Brazilian teams playing against European teams from that era. The great Real Madrid? Yes, beaten many times by different teams. AC Milan? Benfica? Yes, all of them. It's also important to notice that Brazil is a huge continental country. There wasn't a national organized tournament until late 60's. State level tournaments were by far the most important events. It must be said that some of Brazilian states are as big as most of European Countries, but football is historically centered on a few of those states. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were the main ones, with Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul on close second. In the 1958 team there were 10 players from São Paulo (from 5 different teams), and 12 players from Rio (from 5 different teams). 1962 had 13 from 4 different teams from São Paulo. 1970 team had 11 players from Sâo Paulo (from 5 different teams); If you take a list of teams with most National Champions from the 60's until now, first, second, fourth and fifth places are teams from São Paulo - Palmeiras, Santos, Corinthians and São Paulo FC. All of them, by the way, are also multiple Copa Libertadores Champions. Not to mention medium level teams with multiple second place and third place national honours like Portuguesa, Ponte Preta and Guarany (1978 national champion), that were also playing on São Paulo. Teams from São Paulo have more National Trophies than teams from all the other states combined. So, HOW, HOW, HOW can one say that the São Paulo State was not a very strong Tournament, with FOUR high level teams and a number of medium level teams?!?!?! It was strong! Pele was playing against some of the best! Pele's team, Santos, was playing against some of the world's best players, and beating some of Brazil's best teams. Yes, Pele was playing against some of the best players in the world. And guess what? They unanimously say he was the best of them all.....by far. It´s foolish to compare those Brazilian state-level tournaments with German ones, for instance. They are not the same. Nowadays, people forget this, cause the National Tournament is well established, but simply put. State-level Tournaments WERE the most important tournaments throughout the 50's till the 70's. And you know what? THE SAME IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN EUROPE. Imagine this: São Paulo is roughly the size of the UK and has/had 4 high-level teams, Minas Gerais, with two high-level teams, is the size of Spain, Rio has/have 4 high-level teams, Rio Grande do Sul have/has 2, and so on. Those states had very strong state-level championships. One day, they decided to create a strong National Tournament and, little by little, those strong state tournaments begin to shrink. 40 years later, we are calling them "farmer's league" Well, Spain has 2 (maybe 3) strong teams; England has 4, Germany has 2, Italy I don't know anymore, 2 or 3. There are always plans for a Europe League, with all of them. Imagine if little by little they begin to abandon the domestic league in favor of this new continental one. 40 years from now, there will be people saying that Messi or Ronaldo or Muller played in a farmer´s league.

When he retired from the national team, having won 3 world cups, he was 30 years old. A war was stopped so they could watch him play. He inspired so many Brazilians to play with their hearts. Imagine football without him, man, without the magic of missed goals and the legends of a mythological age. Here in Brazil there are few certainties, one of them is that no matter who you are, you won't be bigger than Pele. It's like an unwritten law. Because he did so much for the sport and for us that even today, when we set foot outside Brazil, there is a huge possibility that the first words I hear with a local accent are... Pelé! Ronaldo! Samba! Ronaldinho! Cafu! Carnival! Roberto Carlos! Neymar! =D

i can speak to his impact at the end of his career in old NASL. Cosmos moved to NJ to play in Giants Stadium to handle the crowds. His ex Cosmos teammates who i met were in awe of him and loved him. No one thought he was overrated. More to the point Pele made you WANT to play. While the NASLcollapsed after Pele retired soccer fields and leagues started all over the NJ state. By 1990 USA qualified for first World Cup in 50 years with a roster full of players from New Jersey. Its also annoying Reymar, those videos are otherwise great, focuses on just goals. He played much of his career as a play making attacking MF not just a Forward. Pele was the GOAT in my opinion. RIP

I can tell you why Pelé is the greatest sportsman of all time! First of all the argument against Pelé that he "never played in Europe" is not a putdown on him for several reasons. (1) The monetary differential of playing in Europe or South America was not yet so steep. The reason current European leagues are stronger, and the Champion's League is definitely, alongside with the World Cup the main football event did not exist until the mid 80s. The Brazilian, Uruguayan and Argentinian leagues were equal, if not superior in player quality to ANY individual national league in Europe. Maybe the champions league of the time was comparable to the Brazilian National league in the 60s. (2) There were limits for the European sides to incorporate foreign players into their squads. These limits have been lifted and wealthy European clubs are now international side. At Pele's time, an European side could have a couple of non-national players, which made their own leagues a lot weaker. What money did to football was drain South America of its talent, by bringing the very best south americans to European clubs, which improved the quality of top European clubs and impoverished the south american leagues. So, ignorant people who don't understand the history, the context, and so on, look at current-day European football and simply assume it has always been the most competitive football throughout history. This is an incorrect assessment, football was actually a lot more equilibrated back in the 50s-70s. (3) Compare the Brazilian sides Pele played in with ANY European team of its time. Which tema boasted the quality and stardom of those Brazilian teams? Germany? England? Italy? None. If you take Pelé out, Brazil was still a much stronger side. Pelé was the the highest mountain in a mountain range already taller than the other ranges. He is the best football player the world has seen. Pelé wrote down 185 goals against teams and clubs in Europe as well: Pelé goals against selections: Bulgaria (3), Wales (4), France (6), Sweden (5), Portugal (1), Germany (3), England (2), Belgium (3), USSR (3), Tchecoslovaquia (4 ), Yuguslavia (1), Romania (2), Italy (1), Austria (1), Pelé goals against Spanish clubs: : Barcelona (3), Real Madrid (1), Valencia (1), Atletico de Madrid (3), Betis (1), Espanyol (1), zaragoza (2), Elche (1). Pelé goals against Italy clubs : Inter de Milan (8), Milan (2), Roma (6), Juventus (2), Lecce (3), Napoli (7), Lazio (3), Cagliari (2), Bologna (2), Catanzaro (2), Genova (2), Alexandria (1), Mantua (1). Pelé goals against Germany's clubs: Schalke 04 (1), Stuttgart (1), Hamburgo (2), Wolfsburg (2), Eintracht (6), Hannover 96 (1), Düsseldorf (1), TSV Munich (5), Arminia Bielefeld (1), Lower-Saxony (3), Karlsruher (3), Selection Saarland (1), Selection Berlin (1), Selection Hamburgo (1). Pelé goals against clubs from Englands: Chelsea (1), West Ham (2), Newcastle (3), Stoke City (2), Sheffield (1), Coventry City (1). Pelé goals against clubs from France: Olympique Lyonn (2), Toulouse (2), Racing Paris (5), Stade Reims (2). Pelé goals against clubs from Portugal: Benfica (9), Sporting Lisboa (1). Goles de Pelé a equipos de Belgica: Anderlecht (4), Royal Standard (1), Royal Beerschot (4), Gentoise (2). Pelé goals against clubs from Netherlands, Greece, Hungary, USSR, Switzerland, Yuguslavia : Feijenoord Rotterdam (1), Selection Netherlands (3), AEK Athenas (1), Panathinaikos (2), Budapest (2), Seleccion URSS (4), Basel (3), Zürich (1), Servette Geneva (1), Dinamo Zagreb (1), Estrella Roja Belgrado (1), Danick Kragulevac (1), Zeljesnicar Show less (1). And this one is about the 1970 World Cup where people say that Brazil was Jairzinho’s team when it actually was Pelé’s. Jairzinho carried Brazil, scoring 7 goals and Pele scoring 4 That’s spoken like a man who has never seen any of the 1970 World Cup. That was Pele's team. Jairzinho scored in every game but the fulcrum was Pele. One of the reasons Jairzinho was so prolific was because the defence of every team set out to stop Pele, and several of Brazil's goals involve Pele soaking up pressure and making a killer pass to an open teammate (usually Jairzinho). The England game is a great example, Pele gets the ball in the penalty area and three English defenders swarm him. Pele makes a fantastically composed pass to an onrushing Jairzinho who wellies it over Gordon Banks's shoulder. 1. Pelé 2. Lionel Messi 3. Maradona 4. Cristiano Ronaldo 5. Johan Cruyff Anyone who disagrees? (No fanboys)

11:35 Exactly. Pelé is so hard to "pin down" in this "Greatest Of All Time" discussion, because he was THE first super star who paved the way for not just future football star, but the professional game itself. European top teams would outpay the Brazilian FA to get Santos to play exhibition matches to get Brazil's stars & Pelé into their stadium. Tourists and locals in England alike would search for Pelé like the paparazzi, after he got injured in the 1962 World Cup, because he was such a big deal. Whenever people compare Maradona, Messi, CR7, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cruyff, Platini, Beckenbauer etc, the oldest super star to compare to is always Pelé. But there was no one before him, not the Hungarian national players, nor Italy, Uruguay, England or Scotland, who produced such a phenomenon that transcended the game. Things had to change, after Pelé, so of course his accolades etc. seem dated, he was part of that change.

The thing about his 1000 goals is It was not Pelé who made the claim he had 1000 goals, Brazilian journalists started making the counting back in 1968 and traced back ALL the goals he had scored since becoming a pro, that's why the 15 goal he scored while in the army entered in the list. Then the 1000 goals Race was a really good, entertaining and important moment in Brazilian football culture, and it really piss a lot of us off when somebody who doesnt understand our culture or history tryes to diminish this achievement. A lot of great football players like the whole 82 wc generation grew up with this momento in their minds. That's why players like Zico, Sócrates, Éder Aleixo, Falcão and many others were so good. This is part of our history, is It clear? And theres something else, those unofficial marches were more important in Financial terms than the official games. Santos, Botafogo and many other Brazilian teams, including the seleção, even prefered those games than participating the Libertadores or copa América. Back then there was no distinction, every game was considered official, with the money involved being the defining factor of what tournaments to play. Other than that, good vídeo! I hope you understand that football means a lot for us Brazilian. It's not only a game for us, It is a way to express our identity just like art, literature and music, be It good ir bad. We really do care about it.

I am brazilian and for us Pelé image pass trough a process in our heads. As children we hear the old adults saying he is the GOAT and the young adults saying he is an annouyance on TV (Due to his image being explored in many, sometimes shamefull, ways). When we grow to teenagers we start forgeting Pelé and become fans of our football team and as the world cup approaches we start looking towards the national team main star (right now Neymar). As we grow to adults we start thinking Pelé was overrated and because, as Romario once literally said, "everyone knows Pelé only talks shit", we then start thinking as many young adults think and start saying that he is over rated. But then, something happens as we grow older. We realize that football is a changing sport and you can argue that at that time it looked more amateur but so did all sports and so were Pelé trainers and phisicians and sponsors and etc. Then you finally realize, Pelé was profundly special, he was so far ahead from the others that he changed the way the fans experienced football he was so special that people disliked when the goal didn't come from him. I only experienced that with Ronaldinho Gaucho and Romário. And I can't think in a near future where a non brazillian forgets Pelé name, but Romario is already quite vanishing, only the older foreiners know him. Soon they will also forget Ronaldinho Gaucho. Brazilian footbal ows its status to many briliant stars but the brightest of all is Pelé and that is why for us he is the GOAT, a nacional treasure that we allow to talk shit and lie about his numbers and sell us shitty products. Because we own him that much! We are emotional and suffering people and the fuel to keep pushing against the injustices and disrespect in our country is the tears of our heroes.

The argument that he didn't play against elite opposition but also played on an unbelievably stacked international team doesn't make any sense. Back then when players seldom left their home league you could almost measure a league based on it's national teams performance at a World Cup. The national team was essentially an all star team made of players from their league. and Brazil won three out of four World Cups so their league was obviously exceptional. Most of the best players in the world during that time spent either all or a lot of their career in the Brazilian league. Zico left Brazil for a cup of coffee in Serie A and then went right back. I doubt that changed anyone's perception of him being maybe the best player on the planet. Also Pele was still playing when Maradona debuted. It's not like he's a total dinosaur. I had always thought George Best was the best player in the world. After I had the fortune to witness Pepe’s greatness during a friendly game played by Santos against Newcastle on June 4, 1972 in Hong Kong. Newcastle led 2-1 in the first half but Pele scored 3 fantastic goals in the second half to win the game. One of the goals was the best goal I have ever seen. Pele received the ball in the midfield from a overhead pass, he ran toward Newcastle’s goal touching the ball 7 times by his head, chest, thigh and feet while he ran passed 3 players and the ball never touched the ground and scored with a volley. He was like a magician performing acrobatics in full speed. The was a movie that came out and replayed that play 7 times. I kept going back to the theater to watch that play. I wish somebody had that movie or video to show Pele’s skills. He truly is the king and the best.

@@jensmatthewdawson6997 Fair enough. I prefer Messi to Pele but Pele is still an all time great. However, off the top of my head I can't name a single world class defender of goalkeeper from that era who played in the Brazilian league. Messi, on the other hand, has scored against Allison, van dijk, varane, courtois, buffon, cassilas, ramos, pepe and oblak to name a few. I don't doubt that Europe and South americas leagues were fairly even back then but even in the European game I can only think of a couple world class defenders and goalkeepers. Although Messi has never won the world Cup, a feat Pele accomplished 3 times, you can't really make a judgement on who was the better player when pele won a tournament consisting of a few matches three times, while being supported by some of the greatest players of the time and Messi hasn't won it at all while being supported by a horrible defence, a mediocre midfield and a decent attack that have horrible chemistry together. You of course are entitled to your opinion but this is why I prefer Messi.

@@mjstreak4804 Great reply but to be real, I don’t think that Messi would score those goals in the 60s because the scores back then were lower by miles. But if Pelé played nowadays (2005-2021) he would’ve scored at least 900 goals because if Pelé scored 767 goals in his time where it was harder then I think he would score more goals nowadays, because it’s easier now. Pelé in the 60s played 37 full games in Calcio and in the 60s it was harder by a mile scoring than nowadays, and I can show you the statistics if you want, so Pelé would’ve scored more goals if he played those matches nowadays. Also the 37 Calcio teams Pelé played against was often the top 5 teams. He played against Inter Milano eight times and they were top 3 from 1959 to the early 70s. The scores in the 60s were lower by a mile. We can take Calcio as an example, in the 1968-1969 season the top scorer was Gigi Riva with 21 goals... In 2015 the top scorer was Gonzalo Higuain with 36 goals... Yeah I know that you’re surprised but that’s the truth, Pelé would’ve much more goals nowadays. Pele got kicked to the ground many times, the boots were heavier, the pitch conditions were wet and bad, the ball could weigh twice as much of a ball nowadays if it rained, so goalkeeper in the 60s are far better than goalkeepers from nowadays and that’s because back then the ball was heavier and the goalkeeper had useless gloves. In the 1966-1967 season the top scorer in Calcio was Luigi Riva with 18 goals while Mauro Icardi scored 22 goals I know, that that ain’t such a big difference but what is a very big difference is how many goals were scored totally those seasons! 1966-1967 = 613 goals and 613 divided 306 (total matches the played) is two so they often scored two goals per game while in the 2014 season Mauro Icardi scored 22 goals and the total goals there was over one THOUSAND goals... 1024 goals were scored that season so just imagine if Pelé was in Icardi’s place he would’ve scored goals like a machine. Pelé the Greatest of All Time! (IMO)

@@jensmatthewdawson6997 I do agree on many points but I personally think that in 60s it was harder to score(because of the weight of the balls) but also harder to save shots (because of the trashy gloves). In theory, that means that if you can kick the ball hard, you will be able to score when others can't. Of course Pele did much more than just 'kick the ball hard' but even so, Messi is on track to score more goals than Pele by the time he retires, and, even though goals aren't everything, I'd consider that pretty impressive. Onto another of your points, I don't think that Pele would score 900 goals if he played today. As raymar said in his video, defenders seem pretty tame in the 60s compared to now, looking at the likes of ramos and pepe. As I mentioned earlier, the defenders, while not fouling as much, also often stood still and did nothing while Pele was on the attack. I agree that in friendlies against European teams he was just as impressive but they are just friendlys and I don't think teams normally perform their best in exhibitions. Plus, as you said, back then European teams were the same calibre as South American teams. That is why Messi is the Goat.

There are several misrepresentations in this video. For starters, this goal count controversy doesn’t take in consideration the football scenario of that time - most of these friendlies were taken very seriously by the opposing teams, even more than league games (playing against Pele’s Santos, probably the best in the world was a big motivation after all). Additionally, those excursions from the Brazilian side used to take a big part of the calendar, because of the monetary benefits of them. This way, preventing further “official games” against, in its majority, much weaker competition. Of course, some of the goals were, in fact, in less intense environments, but the quantity of them is nowhere significant enough to reduce dramatically his numbers like the video make you believe (maybe 100 to 200 goals of his 1282). Calling him dishonest because of the count is a little too much as well. As you can see, this was all a big gray area and one with any marketing awareness chooses the numbers that most favors himself. About the severity tackles and fouls in that time, the argument in the video is (choosing politely) pathetic. Showing selected highlights and, from them, extrapolating a whole football era argument is, at the very least, incomplete. I can bet that playing in Uruguay or Argentina in an era where cards didn’t exist and referees were very much not trustworthy was not easy. Finally, when Pele’s career was over, he was undoubtedly the best player ever and his aura was gigantic all around the much less global world. To question his on-the-field abilities and accomplishments is something that only the younger ones can do trying to glorify their newer and fancier idols, the older ones, however, can only admire and applaud Pele’s greatness.

We must acknowledge that it is a different era and rate him based on how much he dominated his era, who he often played against, how good his opponents often were, and how good he was compared to the best players of that era. We still have the stats, stories passed down from parents, and enough clips to get ,at the very least, a good idea of that era and a proper way go determine how good different people were..

the fact is that in that time the friendly matches has different value than today, i mean santos made tour and participates of tournaments and friendly matches just to people in Europe and the rest of the world seen them play so i guess is fair that he score 1283 gols in he's carrear and if you wanted to count just the official matches Cristiano even said thank you to pele and acknowledge their matches with military team and São Paulo state team because by the words of Cristiano it was another time and we have to considered this besides that was also pele who transform the football from just a game to an actually sports, professionalizing the game like doing exercises to have a better athletic body than the others players and he used to training basics Technics a lot different than many players as well so he change the whole sport's mindset and that is why not only he know one of the best in football but the L' equipe journal in a said based in vote that he was the athlete of the century after he ran faster than Jesse Owens who was the second placed velocist in the athletics that time so pele is revolutionary and in my personal opinion is really fair acknowledge him as the best of all time

He, I believe, was more lethal than Messi in big games (I'm not saying that Messi isn't, but, having scored in two WC finals, in Club WC finals and in Libertadores finals, I'd say Pelé wins this one). If everyone was on a level playing field and he stands out so much why is that. What it sounds like is if messi or Ronaldo were born back then they would be Gods immediately?? But they would also train, diet, dedicate etc the same as everyone back then they would not have the level of fitness they do now. That never existed then. Also, many people said, that for Pele was easy to be great, because He played for Brazil team, with many superstars. Ok. Just keep in the mind: after Pele leave Brazil team, after 1970, Brazil couldn’t won WC for 24(!) years. In 1994, and to be correct, it was so-so “victory”, after penalties. The clear Victory Brazil gained just in 2002. 32 years! And don’t forget 1998, when they lost the title against France. In those 32 years there were many great players in Brazil team. This facts demonstrate the the Huge Role of Pele in team. ❤

It´s kind of funny how you say "comparing eras of a sport isn´t really the best way to analyze things" 6:30, but then that´s pretty much all you do throughout the video. To which I´d answer three things: 1. Pele is not responsible for his opponents mistakes. 2. If today´s players actually faced many of the guys Pele made look rather mediocre, they might be surprised how difficult it is to play against them. In other words: The very best players always make it look easy, and also have a habit of making strong players seem very average. It´s the same in virtually any sport. 3. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. 40 years from now, young fans will find CR7 and Messi overrated, too.

I'm glad you did this. I actually kinda hated you and we had some heated discussions (which you later deleted) on that video. It was the typical casual fan point of view you had back then. Also your most disliked video which I thought was very deservedly so. Still you could probably make this same video for Maradona's career. And every "old" player for that matter, since the modern techniques will be always better. When George Saint Pierre (legendary MMA fighter one of the GOAT's if you don't know) says his GOAT is Royce Gracie, it's because what Royce Gracie did back in the old time. He was for his time so many times better, and thought of things how he could win from bigger opponents. And that is what I totally agree with. Messi and CR are regarded as the goats of our generation because they do stuff that every other player can't seem to do. So in my opinion it's always unique when a player stands out in their time, regardless of how far everything was. Because the same arguement can be used against your point, the facilities weren't modern and yet he still was so many levels above the rest, since he was 17. What does that tell you? That he is a very very very special, once in a lifetime athlete. I personally sent you the lists of the European clubs he played against and scored against. I don't know if you used specifically my information (which doesn't actually matter) but I want to say something about that as well. Yes, the games weren't "official". But there was no World Cup for clubs back then. Pele was considered a national treasure from Brazil, literally. So Santos went every 6 months I believe, to Europe, to play against the best teams. And as you said correctly they won most of the times, and Pele had a huge role in those wins, most of the times. Now, just because this wasn't official at the time, doesn't mean we shouldn't look back on it as official. Ofcourse, matches against the army, or whatever, shouldn't count. But this is completely different. We're talking about the best players and teams of Europe at the time. And all those legends couldn't play against Pele. It's as if Michael Jordan in his prime would play against the top of the world, although it's a hard comparison because the US is the biggest country for Basketball, and back then Europe was better followed than Brazil. Regarding Brazil. You're right, he didn't win those World Cups by himsels. He had a great team. This national team was filled with players he would play against in the national league with his club. Also, you stil doubt the players he played against, yet his Brazil national side which won 3 of 4 world cups he played in, was playing mostly in the national Brazilian league, where he and Santos were again dominating the sport. So basically the Brazilian Serie A was like the Premier League at the time, and he was dominating the best league in the world with the best players. You can't make the point "His world cups were won because he has great team mates", which he did, and then say he played in a low league, or trying to underestimate that league. In the national league he played against players like: Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, Rivellino, Carlos Alberto, Djalma Santos, Nilton Santos, Didi, Mario Zagallo, Vava, Amarildo, and many more great players. So that's a thing that gets overlooked in my opinion unfortunately as well. You doubt the defenders of the time, what if there were better facilities etc, wouldn't Pele also improve even more, under those better facilities, tactics, diets, etc? All our icons and legends called him the best. Just think pass these last 2 decades. Since now everything is so recency based... Maradona called Pele (numerous times) the best, Cruijff, Di Stefano, Platini, Eusebio, all of these legends named Pele the best. Check for yourself: www.goal.com/en/news/7130/hall-of-fame-2014/2014/11/11/5153688/the-best-ever-by-some-distance-what-they-said-about-pele Also, don't forget, Pele footage only started to appear starting from 1970, so it's not a lot of footage since that was at the end of his career already. There are literally 10 times more the beautiful plays and actions and goals that we have seen, but we will unfortunately never see it. I truly appreciate this video and change of opinion, however I think you might need to release another video in some months re-adjusting your opinion slightly some more again. This time crediting him more so. The official game stuff is really unimportant to me. Even more if you consider 200 of those 400 were against Europe's best teams. I don't think he is without a doubt the greatest ever. There is a discussion. But he must always be in that discussion.

What many people don’t realize is Pele was doing a madness in terrible pitches, hard rock balls, shit cleats...the technology, training regimes and recovery methods were miles in superior compared to today....if this guy played today imagine how much better he would be with today’s technology? He would be miles ahead of the Neymars and mbappes...Don’t forget he was humble, took care of himself, stayed dedicated and had that killer mindset which is such an important trait to have to be the best....this is why Ronaldinho and R9 (to be a little fair R9 had unavoidable injuries) didn’t reach the goat status...too much partying....so I have no doubt Pele would be the best player in the world today along with a prime Messi....he also made football look easy....made dribbling and finishing (with both feet btw) look so so so easy to the point I foolishly thought “oh I can do that” lol....but that’s what the real ballers do...they make it look natural and effortless....look at players like Messi, Zidane, Ronaldinho, garrincha, rivelinho, even grealish, Bergkamp they do things at their own walking pace and no one can stop them...made the game look easy and they look very natural....

I wouldnt say pele is overrated. Although he never played in europe, he basically laid the groundwork for most footballers today, and that's something we cant really ignore. As for the type of competition he played against, that's always gonna be an unfair comparison, as competition will always become stronger and more improved over time. Soon enough, messi and Ronaldo's competition will be seen as weak too. Imo pele and messi are tied as the goats, pele for his 3 world cups and contributions to world football, and messi for totally dominating his era and basically winning everything there is to win both individually and on a club/international level
