People don't seem to understand that reducing the cost and size of your weapon has tradeoffs like shorter ranger and smaller destructive payload. Infantry launched anti air missiles have a limited energy budget. They can't reach the same altitudes that vehicle mounted and stationary anti air defenses can. It's the same with these drones. People imagine the sub $1000 drones and think they can make them go for hundreds of miles while carrying a heavy payload when that is obviously impossible.

There is no such thing as a perfect weapon system that does all in all situations. Instead of being Nancy Negative you should think of how such a system could be used. For example I think these would be perfect to attack convoys. Light vehicles and personnel carriers would be prime targets. With combined arms, these could be used to gunk up the roads and slow down tanks and they can be hit by your tanks or ATM. Also these can be great for attacking dug in position such as trenches.

Deployed with facial recognition and a small 1 to 3 gram explosive. Set the parameters for your target to what ever your twisted values have determined is a good idea, and release them on a college, political rally, or a front line situation where even if they accidentally take out civilians, the civilian casualties will be fewer than a brute force bomb that costs millions of dollars.

@@TheBeriney Comparing Hellfire with TOW isn't correct, Hellfire requires VERY expensive assault helicopter to be fired from. TOW can't attack targets beyond line of sight: only directly observed targets. And the drones can attack from the skies with extreme precision (much more accurate than hellfire or TOW). Conventional artillery or mortar require hundreds or thousands of shells to hit a single target reliably.

modern missiles are drones kind of. the cost is for sure less and the hang time is more so they can gather intelligence or bomb or provide cover for real missiles or jam radios or be flying radioactive interference

guided missles are alot more expensive (a stinger/javelin is around $60000 per shot, whereas a drone can be ~$1000-$3000), and fly in a very predictable trajectory (los based), a drone with a strap of shaped-charge/c4 can maneuver and steer in unpredictable flight paths (or loiter) to sneak up on an adversary.

Missiles don't loiter for hours and aren't dirt cheap and like you said, have godly AI along with godly manual control and decision options. Also missiles aren't used by single infantry or squad units, whereas these drone type systems can be used by single infantry.. Will replace or compliment rocket launchers.

Swarm drones are very low cost, much lower than EMP.

the only large scale effective emp weapons are nukes. you're not stopping a large drone swarm with emp except by using nuclear arms. there are directed emps but those can only target 1 or at best a couple drones at a time.
