Today is the legendary Glen Campbell's Birthday! Here's Glen performing a beautiful version of the John Hartford classic "Gentle On My Mind" live on "Ryman Country Homecoming" filmed in 1999 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Ray Stevens was honored to be on stage for this special event along with country pioneers Chet Atkins, Waylon Jennings, Lorrie Morgan, Willie Nelson, Roy Clark, Lynn Anderson, Bobby Bare, T. Graham Brown, Ralph Emery, Janie Fricke, Barbara Fairchild, Larry Gatlin, Crystal Gayle, Geezinslaw Brother, Ferlin Husky, Dan Seals, T.G. Sheppard, B.J. Thomas, Ricky Van Shelton, Porter Wagoner, and Gene Watson. Wow, what a moment! Happy Birthday Glen!

All the historical talent on that stage, we’re losing them one by one, it’s a sad day every time one of them passes. Willie, Roy Clark and Chet Adkins admiring Glens skill on that guitar as well as the rest of them, there isn’t any body in the new generation that can touch Glens talent.

@@jimquantic Roy and Glenn were 'compadres' and played together as "dueling guitarists" many times. (from what I've seen over the years) Different yet equally great, IMO. I once thought that I hated country music. But Glen Campbell and many of the people he's surrounded by here, including Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson, Crystal Gayle, Roy Clark, et al., were part of the tradition of country and bluegrass music that was a real American artform. What country music evolved into is a commercial mess of bland, homogenous crap. Hearing this song really surprised me by taking me back to my childhood in the 1960s. He was a bigger part of it than I ever noticed.

I was 6 or 7 years old when Glens variety show debuted on national television. My oldest brother who then bared a stark resemblance to Glen, was deployed to Vietnam. My brother had a band before joining the Marines. So on the night the show aired, the phone began to ring from many of our neighbors who thought the guy they were watching on television was my oldest brother under a stage name. This went on for a couple more weeks to the point my parents started to question Ricks whereabouts. Glen Campbell has given all of us so many wonderful songs that helped us to navigate life just a little easier and funnier at times. Rest easy Glen and thanks for the many memories.

You can't put Roy Clark in Glen Cambell's category of talent. Roy could make you think he was great by his comedy antics and pretending it was so difficult, but he made a lot of mistakes and covered them up by acting silly, which the people loved and interpreted that as being great. But if you played guitar you would see the difference in Cambells talent and Roy Clark or any other country guitarist's capabilities.

"Well, play it the way you did it" "Ok..." Bam! No counting in, no warm up. In one second his entire band is on it in full swing. That's tight.

What fascinates me besides the song itself is these giants of country music watching so intently the way Glen plays the guitar.

There it was Roy Clark and Glenn Campbell, the 2 best guitarist the world has ever seen! Chet Atkins and Willie both have to be in the top 20 too.

One of my favorite Solo's . Glen could play, and sing the phone book, and make a hit with it.

Glenn performed on countless recordings in the studio (wrecking crew) On Strangers in the night, River deep Mountain high, Johnny Angel, Good vibrations and most of all the early beach boy records. Watch the movie “baby the rain must fall” with Steve McQueen that’s Glen Campbell on guitar and Hal Blaine on drums in the movie. See what Alice Cooper said about Glenn!!!! A lot of the hit songs back in the day, was Glenn Campbell, Leon Russell, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco and so many other great session musicians that actually played the music on the records you were listening to.

This is what heaven must be like. The respect, admiration and love shown towards one of the true greats of country/pop music is heartwarming. These all-time greats are mouthing lyrics, humming and playing along(see Chet!) and captivated (see Roy) by Glen's mastery of delivery, style and 6-string expertise. Man, what a collection of Americana at its best!
