This is the best explanation of key switches I've ever seen, regardless of brand. All the correct terminology, and an excessive amount of detail for each type of switch. For example, this is the first time I've really understood the differences between gen 1 and gen 2 Razer Optical Reds; most people just say something like "they removed the spring ping, and uhh I don't know what else". Regarding optical switches, I think a lot has to change before they can I will see them as "the future". The full size Razer huntsman is a $200 keyboard. Corsair's K100 is $250. A normal mechanical keyboard should cost between $100 and $150. The gaming brands need to get their prices under control. Replacing an optical switch is much harder than replacing a mx-style mechanical switch. MX is great because soldering them on and off the board is easy. Yes, the switch part of an optical switch is also easy to remove, but the actual light emitter and light sensor are difficult to replace. This leads into my next two points: There is no optical keyboard standard. You can't drop a Gateron optical switch into a Razer Optical keyboard or a Corsair OPT-X keyboard. If it works, it's a fluke. Sure, this only really matters for the enthusiast community, but I'm a member of that community so I'm biased towards this issue. And finally: Razer doesn't sell optical switches by themselves. It should be possible to upgrade a keyboard with gen 1 optical reds to gen 2 optical reds, but the only way to get the gen 2 switch is to buy a Razer Huntsman Mini. These issues aren't insurmountable, of course, and I understand that this is the way things have to be for now. But as long as we're looking towards "the future" of optical switches, I think it's safe to dream bigger than what we have now.

I'm really interested in that linear gen2 switch. I was never a fan of obnoxiously loud clicky switches, and even though I love the smoothness in most of the linear ones I've tried, the clackity clack bottom out noise is something I'd love to see mitigated more consistently across all brands. Being an optical switch makes it even more interesting, given my unfortunate experience with key chatter on various cherry MX boards despite my efforts to keep them clean. I like how more manufacturers are steering towards that optical tech, but I hope Razer's efforts to further sound dampening can also be reflected on the market as a whole. Silence is something that isn't catered enough in gaming boards, for some reason.

Mecha mechanical ones are meh at best. Mechanical have been around for a while so they are just copies or barely revised switches. Opticals are the only new ones and are supposed to last and faster but it is not just a switch and there are more points for failure
@quentoncollins8861
@quentoncollins8861 3 жыл бұрын
@@Corei14 Optical switches have less points of failure. In fact the only hypothetical point of failure is the LED vs a mechanical switch requiring contact with the board. There's a reason optical technology has been used by the military - because the lifespan is far longer than Razer's advertised 100 million clicks. So long as the LED is working you're basically golden because of the frictionless application.

Personally, I agree with you on this. The red linear optical switches are more my style. I recently bought the Deathstalker V2 pro and I absolutely love both the optical switches and the low profile of the keyboard.

the purple ones are tactile and click like the green mechanical switches? does red feel similar to yellow?
@kanishkajayalath7510
@kanishkajayalath7510 Жыл бұрын
@@ProAvgeek6328 the reds are more sensitive than the yellow. The actuation distance is even lesser than a thin and light notebook's keyboard. But you get that satisfying key travel which makes it feel like a proper mechanical keyboard. Also the keys I have in the deathstalker V2 pro are the 2nd gen red optical keys. One thing about optical keys they have a longer life time than pure mechanical keys due to them not needing to hit anything to register a keystroke. Hope this answers your question.

Great video! One question about the red optical gen2: in your video you say the actuation force is 45g, but the razer website says it's 40g. What's the correct value? I was definitely going for the Huntsman TE, but after your review it seems like the Red Optical are still too light and it's easy to press them by mistake. Thanks for sharing!

Bought a white huntsmen mini, with red linear switches. Tbh such an improvement over mu corsair K70 SE. same travel and actuation distance but the slight increase in force required makes misclicking occur less. Also my huntsmen mini didnt have the space bar stabilizer break after using a keycap puller to remove the spacebar. It’s also surprisingly a lot quieter than the K70 and the smaller form factor is just bliss when gaming. Overall nice typing experience as well as gaming, production use though the small form factor makes it not ideal hut that goes for any 60% board

Thanks a lot. When starts optical gen2? What names of keyboards has it? And what are the names of the gen1 optical boards? I like to by the red ones. But i think normal orange and yellow are good for me to. This is the only left in the video, a list of wich keyboard is available with wich switches. Thanks

I have used Green for many years but the board i am using broke last night (black widow elite) and the space bar is messed up. But i think i am going to get the Huntsman v2 and get the purple switches and see how it is. The software has never done much for me and i have never bothered with it but the Razer Keyboards are the best because they come with a great wrist rest for comfort. Great video, thanks for making it.

This is helpful. I wanted to know what kind of regular mechanical switch to look for to get a sound and feel similar to my mecha membrane. I love the sound of Browns on video but I find I dislike how it feels when I use it myself. Looks like I gotta go for clicky. Which I had no idea I would be doing. I definitely won’t like linear.
@dundun8323

For clicky, I've had greens over and over and one set of orange. I like the greens a lot better than the oranges but again it's all preference, however there is a reason they got rid of the oranges, they were just not that good at typing (compared to the greens) and not that good at gaming(compared to the yellow), they were very mediocre overall. However at work I actually use yellows now because the greens I had were just too loud, the oranges just feel cheap to me, and when I was on the phones, I had every client commenting on my typing. Since switching over to the yellows, I still get the odd comment if I am really bottoming out but still, I've been won over. I have become so much more accurate bc of how sensitive they can be at first, especially coming from something so forgiving as the green, but I type like a bullet now, over 100wpm. I was always over 75wpm but hovered between 75-80 for years but within a couple days I was over 90 and within a week well over 100wpm ( I blame the razer green and mx cherry blue switches for plateauing me for so many years lol ). I am quite the anomaly though it seems because I I don't really care which I use, it really depends on what I'm doing. I didn't think I would like typing with yellows but like I said, it allowed me to actually hit the speeds I knew I could when typing and it also helped with my accuracy overall. I never get fatigue from using the yellow as I have from long days typing on any type of tactile bump switch. It feels satisfying but after some hours of typing, you wish you didn't have to always press passed to bump to register. Something to note that people like to mention: Just as fast as you can make a mistake on a yellow, you can delete it too, it's all relative in speed and correction. With tactile switches you are less likely to make a mistake but you still will and it'll take longer to type and longer to erase... Yellows are fast all around and actually very comfortable. I never got the hype on orange though, I had one and I sold it after they went out of stock. In my opinion, If you want clicky and tactile you go with Green or Purple or mxcherry blue, nothing else lol. If you want linear, you go with yellow or redv2. And then it's whatever you like more. My home computer will always be super annoying and clicky. Always lol but that's because I won't be typing for hours on end on it. For that I had to go linear. The redv1s weren't my thing but once I tried the yellow switches I haven't really looked back when it comes to work and typing sessions.

Razer Oranges are actually a nice tactile switch (when properly lubed). The bump is rounded; more like a Zealio than an MX Clear or Holy Panda. A bit too light for me for typing but really good to game on.
