This week we are running the famous Lionel MPC 8307 Daylight! I have been wanting this engine for a long time and it is a blast run. Joining the 8307 are two of our favorite Vision Line engines, the GS5 and GS2 from the 2020 Vol 1 catalog.
Enjoy!

There's something about the Southern Pacific Daylight paint scheme that can make almost any locomotive look appealing (steam, diesel electric), doesn't matter the scale that it's in.

The 1983 whistle was a good chuckle! I've seen the daylight train out here in the west. Its so imposing and the real whistle sounds like bloody murder raging down the track and echoing through the mountains like the screams of lost souls.

I think one of the best advancements in model trains has to be the low-end speed control. Don't get me wrong - the increases in detail to the bodies and sound effects are really important too - but even if we had those but the trains took off like a rocket and couldn't slowly & realistically build up speed, the effect would be lost. For me at least, I mostly saw trains in stations, arriving and pulling away. The slow build up of watching the engines hiss and hum as they slowly but smoothly built up speed was the beginning of adventure. All the sounds of the bells, whistles, and horns are associated in my mind with watching these locomotives coming to a halt gently and smoothly pulling away. A train moving at high speed is great, but the finer points can be lost in a blur. A train at rest is pretty yet restrained. But the transition state in between is where you can fully observe and take in all the details, engineering, sights, and sounds of these living machines. Poetry in motion.
@RBPTrains

I agree 100%. The prototypical motion is incredible and really brings the scale models to life

For me it's the improvement of the whistle over speed or body work. I think of the whistle as the engines soul, it's voice. Without the right whistle your high and mighty streamlined express engine.......can sound like a tiny little pup.

I have the Daylight from the 1991 catalogue with the original Railsounds that is based on the same tooling as the MPC Daylight. While it doesn't sound very realistic by modern standards, Railsounds 1 was a big improvement over the Mighty Sound of Steam in my opinion. I've heard that the tooling for these engines is just a modified version of the J class, but I don't have a J (for now) so I can't confirm that. While they aren't very accurate, they are still very cool engines.

I am back from my Social Media Vacation and I am excited to start binging your videos again to catch up. I am also loving your MPC Era videos, these were the trains that were around when I was growing up in the 90s that people had. I own a few, but I always find myself watching one of your videos and immediately searching online for the train you just featured. The Daylight is something that I’ve dreamed about owning, in any era, because of the history of the Southern Pacific where I live and the fact that red and orange are my favorite colors. I enjoyed this video and I always enjoy seeing trains running around your amazing layout…the Barbie train (?) making a cameo appearance was also a nice chuckle for me. Closing in on 8,000 subs and I remember being here when you had 300 something subs…I am extremely proud of you, Chris! It could not have happened to a better person and a better ambassador to this great hobby! ❤️

Though not my favorite railroad, I'd say the daylight is up there in designs designs. It almost has a Dreyfus Hudson design feel where it's still a streamline engine, but it highlights area's like the pistons and drive rods in order to make it easier for the work crew when the engine needs to be repaired.

Remember - always have to get into and re-grease / oil the gearboxes in those MPC’s or anything with old Pullmors. Any excessive vibration or noise from those motors is a sign of dryness or even gumminess from baked-in grease. Check out your vision GS motor-mount screws and motor positioning when you get a chance. I had an alarming number of these daylights come in straight from Lionel with motors not angled straight at the gearbox and grinding down the dog-bone shaft. Had to correct each one and also tighten all three motor screws to prevent any possibilities of long term damage. One of the motors was completely loose and flopping around instead of driving the wheels. Terrible QC. Anyway, those are two beauties you have there (three including MPC). :)
