If you walk up to a random person on the street and ask if they know anyone with an RC car and what is it, there is a good chance they will say: I know someone with a Tamiya Clod Buster. The Tamiya ClodBuster is a true icon in the RC hobby. It has been around for decades and continues to make hobbyists today excited to own one. Greg is exactly that, he’s beyond excited to have a Clod Buster back in his RC collection and the version he got his hands on is the Super Clod Buster Black Edition. This video won’t be the typical review video, but more of just talking about the Clod and what it means to Greg, what he thinks it means to hobbyists and why it’s as popular as it is. Of course we’ll show you details of the truck and even lots of action. We know you want to see it running! The Clod Buster is a true RC classic, we hope you have fun watching our fun with the truck.

Youngsters will never understand.. “how fast is it?” “Can you run 8’s” “you have to build the whole thing?” To us who grew up when this first came out this was the king I remember rccaraction pulled a jeep across a parking lot with a stock clod with a weight bar strapped to the front.. lol I remember I had to do chores and work just to get a kit to put together and then work and wait to get a battery and radio system ..kids these days ..they will just never understand.. my first car was a kyosho raider. 100’s of thousands of dollars and 40 years later I still play with rc cars no matter how hard I try I always go back.. thank you for the time you spend bringing this hobby to you tube for all of us to enjoy

I honestly wish kits were more popular. I got into cars after building aircraft and static scale models so building is half the fun for me.

If you wasn't a kid back in the 80's at the start of the monster truck boom you missed a lot. Bigfoot, vs USA1, plus all the other upstarts, it was great. Then Tamiya came out with the clodbuster. You couldn't ask for anything more as a kid that loved monster trucks.

Mate……. I will never forgot this model…. I was dreaming about it with my RC magazines, reading again and again reviews about it, and when I was finding one in the fantastic toys shop of my city, I was watching the box during a lonnnnng time, dreaming about it…… (was a little kid and this range of prices wasn’t possible to my family so I even didn’t ask or whatsoever, was just dreaming about it……..) Tamiya is SO appealing with their packagings, the colorful plastics etc. Everything… Japanese and their sense of details is really a pure joy and pleasure!! Thanks a lot for the video, big salut 🫡 from France. ViNZ.

People who criticise models like these aren't aware of the history. The OG Clodbuster was released in 1987, and back then the Jet Hopper/Turbo Hopper depending on region (about USD$60 at the time) and 4WD Bullet (about USD$80 at the time) were what most kids had, they were the typical RC car for anyone younger than a teenager. Those prices converted for inflation in today's money are staggering; Jet Hopper being USD$162 in today's money, and the 4WD Bullet being USD$216 in today's money. Spending that kind of cash today gets you a pretty darn good brushless setup in comparison! It's like the first hard drive in 1956, the IBM 305 RAMAC, with it's _whopping_ 3.75 megabyte capacity that cost the equivalent of $33,000 in today's money! The younger generation can't understand these models because the significance just isn't apparent, because the context is buried away nearly 4 decades ago. Sure these re-release kits might not be "scale" accurate, nor are they the back flipping, tyre shredding, 100mph beasts we get today. But back then, when these kits were the pinnacle of engineering, they were well and truly the most mind blowing fun you could have after your 7.2V battery fast charged from your parents car with the bonnet up!

The original Clod Buster was the first RC Car I built on my own. I'd owned a 12th scale carpet racer and a grasshopper, but this was the first I built on my own. It was a lot of fun building. My neighbor and I broke that chassis maybe 6 times and repaired it with everything from tin sheets to pop cans. I finally got rid of it a couple years ago after not driving it for more than 20 years, but still kinda miss seeing it. I wish run time would have been longer back in the 80s, but with the two motors and HUGE tires, I never got more than about 5 minutes of runtime out of a pack. Still, it was a ton of fun.

Similar story, I had one in the 80's along with a Blackfoot. I sold both years ago and regretted it. I just bought a Black Ed Clod and Two re-release Blackfoots, one to remain stock, the other will receive some tasteful hop ups like an MIP diff, new 540, and a hobbywing 1080 esc. Tamiya RC models are a unique experience that every enthusiast should have.

The Clod Buster has a special place in my heart. As a kid my friends neighbor had one sitting high up on a shelf and ever since then, before I knew what it was, I knew I had to have one. Didn't buy my clod until the early 2000's and I still have it with a new era chassis from RC4WD when they used to sell clod stuff, along with many upgrades. It will go to the grave with me. Last year I picked up a stock TXT-1 from Japan which I feel the same about. The Clod is why I have a room in my house just for my rc's haha. I gave away my 1st RC, a Super Blackfoot about 20 years ago and when I tried to get it back my friend sold it. I'm still trying to fill the void. I will be buying the black edition soon, can't have too many Tamiya rc's or monster trucks! Long time subscriber. Great video and couldn't have put it better myself!!!

Thank you for the video. Like others that have commented, I am the owner of an original Clod Buster from 1987. I bought it via mail order from America's Hobby Center in 1987 and I think that it was about $220. Over the years it was completely modified with an ESP Clodzilla IV chassis/suspension and full JPS aluminum gearcases. After discovering the RCMT message board, I then created a full custom 6x6 monster semi truck from two Bull Head kits and a Sassy Chassis 6x6 chassis. I still have that minster semi, which I named "Chernabog." I still have my first Clod Buster though and I recently dusted it off after it was put in storage after I got married and became a family man. My little buy is just starting to get into R/Cs so I was thinking about getting back into Clod Busters. He really wants to see my old trucks run! One thing that I was wondering is, where are the R/C monster truck online message boards these days? I was a major user of RCMT.net back in the day (about 15+ years ago) but it seems that that message board no longer exists. Are there any online forums dedicated to just monster trucks these days? Thanks again for the video. It is bringing back so many wonderful memories for me!

I remember the first time I saw the clod buster kit at my local hobby store. I marveled at the price and the never before seen features. As a kid with a paper route in the late 80's, clod buster was one of those unreachable kits. With paper route money and money for building tamaya kits for my friends, I was only able to afford the Striker and the cheapest Futaba transmitter.
@----.__
@----.__ 9 ай бұрын
I had the Striker, it was my second car after the Metro 4WD Bullet if you remember those? It took me and my dad the better part of a week to build as I had to wait for him to get home from work, and we could only spend about 15 minutes a night working on it. We finally finished the model, and despite me having over a year's experience driving the bullet, and my dad having zero experience with RC cars, he decided he was going to test drive it on the first run. We put the 7.2v battery in, he turned on the transmitter, then the car, and took off down the road at top speed - straight in to the neighbours garden while they had their sprinklers on! I was in tears as I thought the car was ruined, but thankfully the hard bucket body kept all the electronics dry! I've never let my dad forget that day! The Striker was an insanely fun car as a kid.

ClodBuster I had one in 1987 great memories. People who don’t know this truck was so ahead of it time. The four wheel drive two motors the four wheel steer. Watching this video brings back the only weak link on truck was the corner of chassis where long trailing arm connected would always break. I must have put 10 chassis in that truck. Thanks for the smile

I agree with your comments in this video! It’s the quintessential monster truck from the 80’s and it’s perfectly to scale! When I first saw one when I was a kid I knew I wanted one. I didn’t get one until I was an adult and also sold it and have regretted it. I have had many since then and never get enough. I picked up another one and got home and saw this video and got to watch it while I worked on it. Thanks for the video!

That’s awesome! I’m glad you finally got one again after all these years. I know how that regret feels. Because back in the 80’s, my “clod buster regret memory” was the Tamiya monster beetle. It was my first ever hobby grade RC car. It’s long gone, lost in a move. But my LHS has the monster beetle in stock now. And I’m seriously considering grabbing one. Great video! Thanks for taking me back to the sounds of 80’s RC when I was a teenager 🤩

Whoever made the comment that it’s not scale thank you for defending our era. Hell its scale back then for us it was the coolest thing . I believe they called it a clod buster but if I had to guess over licensing issues it was modeled after a monster truck called Samson one. This is just another guess but that’s why Tamiya never made A Ford body like Bigfoot.

Nothing like todays RC vehicle's from Traxxas or Axial but makes ya apricate how RC has advanced over the years. My first RC was the Tamiya Monster Beetle and still have that car. As always great content and enjoy viewing your channel. Cheers!!!

Never had a Clod - but just got one to do a Retro racing build. Think I might pick up another one and keep it stock. Sure looks like fun! Great vid.

When I was a kid, I saw this and the USA-1 in a Tower Hobbies magazine, in a comparison piece. I always preferred the looks of the USA-1. But as the years passed, I realized the USA-1 (both nitro and electric) were based off vehicle chassis that weren't design primarily for monster trucks; they had independent suspension all around, whereas the Clod had actual solid axles. And of course, the USA-1 is no more, but the Clod lives on. In the end, I got neither; I got a Kyosho QRC series Wild Dodge Ram, it has neither the tires, nor the suspension of a monster truck, and in typical Kyosho, is a pain to look for parts for. I love the little thing, it was my first RC, and nitro with reverse was such a novelty back then; but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd be just as happy if I got a Clodbuster instead a long time ago. And it would certainly be easier to restore. Long live the Clodbuster! And excellent video!

Ooo! The King Cab was awesome too. My track had a King Cab class. I remember there being like 4-5 heats of them with 6-8 trucks in each heat.

These re-releases definitely bring me back to my childhood. When the big kids in my neighborhood had the Lunch Box and the Midnight Pumpkin. My first real rc was a Hornet. Then I graduated to a Losi XX buggy, then the USA-1, then an RC-10GT. Even with that being said I don't think I'd get a new one. I'd rather stick with new technology at this point. My JBL 21101 for instance 🤷‍♂️

@@rcdriver had it out this fall, but that tamiya speed control is not remotely water proof first run it got some moisture in it and went up in smoke!!

cannot wait to see the other clod build. I am in the process of putting my Clod back to how Tamiya intended it to be and then I will do another clod for rock crawling

How ironic this is....I was probably buying the super clodbuster today when this video was downloaded! My first one and with what little I have done, it's a blast to work on! Ordered my bearing kit from Jim's bearings... should be here in a few days, which gives me a chance to paint the body....great video!

The one r/c that I wanted for years and years. Finally had my first one about a year ago. I have 2 right now, one turned in to Bret Engleman's heartbeat monster truck (2nd version) and the other one is just an old school looking, tilt bed, lights, etc.

I know the video is old it just was recommended lol Yes 1987 and if its like mine with the Chevy Bowtie and Chevrolet o the tailgate its a early version they had to stop that for copyright reasons. Funny thing mine has been a black edition since 87 I never did like the stickers or the red color so I put on chrome wheels and painted it black with red stripes video on my channel. I would go to the indoor dirt track and people wanted me to drive over their cars lol Its clumsy but fun I love this truck I will never sell it!! I even have the rare rx540vz technigold motors
