The new products from the Spektrum RC camp continue to flow out at a rapid pace. We’ve recently reviewed the new G2 Smart Batteries and Charger. Then we reviewed the new Spektrum sensored brushless crawler system. And now we have an overview of the new DX5 Pro. But wait! Didn’t we already do that? @@KalsRcAdventures Yes, you just need to update the programmer box. This is done using the Smartlink PC app. To do this go to Device > LCD Programmer. It will bring you to the update screen and you can update the box there. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your video and simple explanation. Meanwhile, kindly, I would like to know if it is possible to purchase a Spectrum temperature sensor and connect to the cooling fins of the motor via a Spectrum receiver so one could monitor the motor temperature on the radio when using a different motor and esc?

Great review, thanks. I see this video is 3yrs old. I'm looking to get back into the hobby and maybe do some club racing. I'm sure this radio would exceed my needs. Are you aware of any plans Spektrum may have of updating this model or introducing something new before I pick this up?

Do you need to have Spektrum electronics in the car in order to take advantage of the features for this radio? Or, can you use different branded electronics instead? This may be a basic question to answer, but I'm new to RC and I was interested in upgrading my transmitter.

Is telemetry available for people not using spectrum in the car? I use XT150 plugs for example so will I still get battery info on the transmitter or do you need to be completely in the spektrum ecosystem?

Help with binding! After I bind to the receiver and pull on the throttle, pause, full brake, pause, full right, pause, full left, pause...no problems here but when done I have no reverse. I do the exact same steps on the DX5 Rugged and everything works like it should. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help! Wally

HELP. I have the losi tt pro with the dx5pro and I have a savox 1258 servo but I'm just turning so wide. I can't turn that sharp. What do I do on my controller to help

I was curious, will this work with the receiver that comes with SCX10 III RTR, or do you have to buy a new one and upgrade it?

Yes you can bind it to any Spektrum DSMR radio, preferably one that supports SMART for access to the SMART telemetry data provided, which this radio does. When binding, though just make sure that you set the frame rate to 11 or 22ms - 5.5 is only used for 2 channel racing applications, and as such, does not support the frame bandwidth needed to supply the SMART telemetry.

traxxas525 they are not, the dx5 rugged will only do dsm2 and dsmr, however the dx3r will do them ALL!!! So I hope it gets fixed

Unfortunately, no - this was designed as a one-sided radio; it just has a little rubber door on the left side that hides the SD card slot. The DX6R was the only radio in their lineup that supported left-handed use, but it has since been discontinued. A successor has been rumored for a while now, but I suspect that given the global supply situation, not to mention that it was the expensive flagship surface radio, they may have put it on hold.

This radio will store 250 different cars. You will need a matching DSMR receiver for each car. Once each car has it's own receiver, you can program all 4 of them to 1 radio. Then, you use the scroll wheel and choose the car that you want to drive.

I own two spectrum transmitters, their radios are so far behind the competition. They had actual Pro transmitters but for some reason dropped those lines. Current models with small displays, no touch screen, not a color display. They really need to step it up, I have an ancient DX3r pro that puts my Dx5 rugged to shame ( larger screen and back-lit). Compared to my Futaba and Sanwa, Spektrum has a long way to go.

Yeah I always hated spectrum(I am sure they have gotten better)...but I am just getting back into the racing after 5 years off. I think I might spring for the 7pxr...never was a fan of my m11 airtronics back in day(I am sure they/sanwa are good) switched to 3pks then 4pk. But hey I still use an old spectrum rx for VRC link on computer lol.

I prefer with the scroll wheel. My brother has the rugged and the touchscreen is difficult to use when on track. Plus my basher is a kraton 8s all spektrum electronics. This purchase was a no brainer for me. I have 3 dsm2 receivers collecting dust. Now my older futaba can be set aside for a spare.

How the hell do you update the firmware??? The spektrum website literially only says how to put a sd card in and how to register but nothing how to update the firmware. It seems stupid that radios like the rugged have a usb cord that plug straight into a PC. But the pro you need to buy sd card and reader. Currently it doesn't display anything from my spektrum esc and smart battery. So I think I need a update. Can you pleaseeee do a quick video or explain how in comments.

I own a 2019 dx5pro. It has plenty of features for me, telemetry is in there. I don’t use it. It’s a good transmitter but I wouldn’t t rush out to buy another. Spektrum should of updated it some more. My gripes are, the screen( looks like it belongs on a cheaper radio) and the scroll button is a pain trying to get it to stop where I want it to. It’s like it’s way too sensitive. Also, for the love of god get rid of the firmware update screen. Any recommendations for a transmitter battery pack? Mine can eat through some AA’s and they are getting expensive. I measured my compartment but couldn’t find what I need( it’s been a few weeks and I don’t remember the exact measurements anymore).

If the battery tray plugs into a 2 pin JST connector, then the SPMB2000LITX battery should work in your 2019 model as well. It's the same one I got for my Daughter's DX5Pro 2021 model. Keep in mind that you would also need to get SPM6834, which is a charging harness for the pack to use with any charger that has a Li-On charging mode and the 4mm bullet connector inputs.

Supply chain issues - the same problem that a lot of companies face at the moment, unfortunately. Realistically, it probably means that any allotments they are set to receive before then are already backordered.

spektrum always had great ergonomics....looking for a replacement for my dx3r but dear lord who thought of putting the screws on the battery tray....who want to use a screwdriver to change batteries....dealbreaker for me

No, but you can easily tell the difference out of the box. The 2021 version has a different wheel rim design. Take a good look at the video when he has both radios side by side. The 2021 version has the rim with the "Y" spokes. The original has straight spokes. That original design rim in the standard size is included in the box too - in addition to the smaller wheel that is also of the straight spoke design.

I have various spektrum 2e,dx4c, and dx5c, they all lack in range. Not a good match with fast boats (or speedruns)... nobody in boat club uses spektrum.

I suggest, look for tests. Most of the use older transmitters. Futaba is a common brand with good range. Cheaper brands i don't know...

I understand. Never had that issue though. When you set-up a boat and have taken out a few times, you will know when batteries are almost empty. I do at least. And you still will be able to get to shore, just much slower. When buying extreme fast boat, make sure you have saving device. Boat,fishingrod,boat with floodchamber, those kind of things. Fast boats flip, always, no matter how good they are...!

I think that it might be time to upgrade to this radio system from my trusty DXR3. BUT do I want to be dragged into the cost of another smart system after being deep into the Traxxas smart system for years!?! I mean first it's the smart radio and receiver then what good is it without the smart esc and motor, then the smart battery or batteries and the smart charger. there goes another $1000!!! OUCH!!! Better stay away frum this Rabbit Hole!!!

I purchased the system but found there's literally no help out there to set up our tech support on this system the videos are lacking an the sealer's are worse an so many of these so called video host are at best self sponsored athletes that tell us nothing we need to know. It's sad that it's come to that .I ask one thing to explain one thing how to set up the telemetry on the Dx5c radio system how hard is that.... apparently very hard....
