Alex"s mother was French, he grew up in a French speaking home. Wish people would stop acting like speaking French is some kind of magic trick. To speak French when you grew up in a French speaking home is no weirder than speaking Japanese if you grew up in a Japanese home..

At the time, when people thought of "Jeopardy!", original host Art Fleming was the person to come up, as he just started hosting a revival of the show. Alex, on the other hand, would have just been starting another run of "High Rollers".

And as a native francophone I can tell you he speaks perfectly, with an erudite yet colloquial French Canadian tone. You have to strain to hear an accent.

@@ponfed Could he hold a conversation in French?
@David_R9223 жыл бұрын
@Xalpha23 Maybe so, but I haven't seen any video of him conversing in French. There was one video of him being asked a question in French, and he had a little trouble understanding and he answered in English. Perhaps he could read prepared statements and pronounce French correctly, but he was rusty with a 2 way conversation.

In a show he did in the US briefly in 1976, "Double Dare", he actually had a brief exchange with one contestant where he spoke some French quite well. About him speaking French, I could be wrong, but I think he either learned it while attending the University of Ottawa, or it was before that for a very brief time he went to a military school in Quebec. It was brief because he only lasted a few days there.
