The First detailed look at what you get in the box from this epic vintage rerelease by Tamiya. Now at almost £400 / $564USD, you would expect quality and I'm happy to report that's just what you get.
With that said, this kit has divided vintage Tamiya fans as it's not a direct copy of the original. With kit presentation being lowered and missing features like titanium screws, will it still be a big success for Tamiya or will that big price tag and missing features come back to bite them? Let us dive into the kit so you can make up your own mind.

For me the thunder dragon will be the star of 2021. I Finally got into RC in early 2020 after 34 years of wanting to get a tamiya car! I don't remember the thunder dragon from my childhood but when I saw it online it was the car I wanted. The re re announcement made my 2021. Just hope it does arrive this friday

I agree with you Gavin, Tamiya should have replaced the Esc & motor with titanium screws and aluminum motor mount. Its an expensive kit so it deserves full options.

It's not priced like an Avante or TRF503, so not sure I get why they should do that? It's a cool kit and I like mine, but I don't think it's deserving of titanium screws. Alloy motor mount? Sure, but not a must.

picked up my evo today and as i could not get one back in 92 i was not gonna miss out again i did notice that in the manual it don't give any hop-up options in the build pages so will their be any on the horizon. the box art is fabulous and the lay out inside is fine by me just like the recent re re top-force tbh. the revive top force shell is a beaut i brought one recently and painted it over the weekend and sent pics as requested by owen . he has said he will be putting some under trays up for sale soon as he has made some and they look great also. all in all i am over the moon with it

I don't understand why Tamiya went to all the effort of beefing up the chassis, but not providing an aluminium motor mount or a slipper to bring it more up to date, like what Schumacher did with the Cat XLS Masami release

First I want to say that I love that Tamiya is back with TF evo. Did not see the diff (metal hardware) in your clip. original TF evolution had other diffusers in lightened aluminum. The big difference was that they had larger thrust bearings that made diff smoother. The downside was that the metal was softer than butter 🤣 and the drive cups cleared the spins in them. Didn't see the splitter with the one-way bearing either? Feels like Tamiya has taken a real shortcut

It is a nice looking kit, nice box art, quite nice layout inside the box. I agree with Gav, should have left the motor and ESC out and put some other better parts in. The big issue for me is the price, it's far too expensive for my liking, I could get a more capable competition buggy for the same price, or a more 'club racer' buggy for way less. And as for the Tamiya highlight release of the year, for me it would be the TA-08 Pro, more my kind of thing.

After hearing about the short comings of the kit, not Ti screws, no blister packs, decal name change, steep price, and a few other things, Icancelled my pre-order for two kits.... just not worth it in my opinion. Still, it is a sexy car....

Crazy how my Yokomo CAL3 was $430US delivered to Australia ($550AUD) and thats a PRO racing buggy! I cant justify spending $619AUD+delivery on a car that will only ever be on the shelf, or barely driven. Think id like to put that money towards a Javelin - much better build quality as you know, and it can take a bit of a beating!

This is a Tamiya thing mate. You have to want them, it's the same with all the re-re's. Their value is to the person owning, because they don't stack up particularly well to the competition.

Awesome! Can’t wait for your build videos on this! Does this kit come with idler and spur gear that are entirely plastic? Or does it have the soft metal alloy idler and alloy gear that connects with the spur? Will you be doing the mod for the diff covers that I have read about where you drill through the case and then use a long screw and nut to secure the diff cover? If so, I hope you are able to capture that part of the build on video.

The TFE never had blister packs, and frankly, they are annoying as hell to deal with during the build. You can't fault Tamiya for not using blister packs as they have been gone long before the TFE was originally released. Glad they are using a silver can. Many choose their own electronics, so the less you pay for a motor or ESC you don't want, the better.

Even though I wanted the Ti screws- really they aren’t great in reality. The are really soft and that’s why I’m missing a few in my original evolution. I didn’t know about JIS screws so damaged quite a few of them. Can see why Tamiya doesn’t do them anymore.
