My lead guitarist bought me a chrome snare from a yard sale for $5. The shell and rims were frosted and grimy, heads were split, and there was only a few stands left of the snare springs. I spent a lot of elbow grease cleaning it, new heads and snare springs, etc and did some research. Turns out, it’s a 1970’s Yamaha Recording Custom Chrome snare, and is worth about $350 or so. To me, it is priceless, best sounding one I have ever owned, I will never part with it!

@@Dardrum Funny story. I met legendary nor cal drummer Leonard Hays from Y&T. I had no idea of who he was. This was years before the internet. I met Leonard at local bar and restaurant some 20 years ago. He was playing in a cover band. A bit loud for the venue but awesome drummer nonetheless. I thought he was Bonzo reincarnated. Totally cool cat. When my buddy told me who he was, I was like hot dam!!! Mr Hays passed away about 2 years ago.

Best deal I ever found on a drum was for $39 at a own shop, a rusty 14x5.5 pearl custom alloy sensitone steel eight lug with the beaded shell. It had rubber gaskets between all contact points the shell made with hardware which I really liked. It had triple flanged hoops but I put die cast hoops on it after restoring it and put a 40 strand puresound bed on it, slapped on an Evans clear snareside 300 and a coated UV2. By far my favorite snare I have. Sounds perfect for me at all tunings.

Nodar Rodé has been repairing and customizing drums, as well as developing his own collapsible drum system for longer that you've been on this planet. He began on 46th Street at the Manhattan Drum Shop under Joe Callato. He then had his own shop, but, after the Musician's Row got gentrified and the whole Times Square became the hellhole that it is, he had to move the shop to his house in NJ. All NYC drummers (including all the legendary names in all genres) had their drums serviced at the Manhattan Drum Shop. If he cut that snare bed, then it's done correctly.

Aww, bummer about those screws falling out, especially after all the effort being put into restoring this drum! Gotta say I admire your patience David, cleaning all the lugs with cotton buds and stuff! And that snare does sound great, too :-) My band once shared a practice room with another band, in the early 90's, and I was using their beautiful black lacquer Yamaha set that also had a Brady wood snare; That was the first time I heard about that brand but hadn't known yet they were Australian (my neighbouring country). Cheers, V. :-)
