Thanks for taking the time to finish this video, I'm learning a lot of useful things as I do from all of your videos, as I start to tackle the job of restoring and tuning up some of my old drums.

David, I had the same thing happen to me with Gibralter! I got a set of the new flush base hardware. In the high hat you know that it comes in two halves and the top rod threads into a nut on the bottom rod. While watching the olympics this summer I was putting it together and the top rod just wouldn't go. Running, threading. Sprinting, threading. Jumping, Threading.. swimming, threading.. Uuuugh!! Looking in with a flashlight in frustration I realized that the nut had no threads cut in it! after emailing DW customer service they sent a new stand right out, and and said they'd send a pre paid label to send the old one back. But it never came! I still have the old high hat stand. I think i'll save it for parts unless you think you might want it. I've heard some rumblings on my favorite drummer forum about their QC too.

When I did a couple old drum set clean ups in the past, I used the Lysol all purpose spray foam cleaner on the grimey metal parts and it actually worked great. Better than anything else imo

Absolutely love your videos. I've learned much in the form of doing things in a logical or simple way. You're welcome with the information that this is a Majestic Deluxe (like the picture in my avatar when I was actually young), but the mistake could be made because MJ used Slingerland style lugs. Easy mistake. I love the cotton idea you used for potential spring rattle. It's brilliant. My wife bought me a vintage Ludwig Supraphonic snare for my 61st birthday. While I'm in the process of restoration, I added the some cotton to the lugs even though they are not likely to rattle. It's an easy way to assure each restoration and only takes a few seconds to do.

There are tons of different old vintage Japanese drums under a million different badges. Some are made by pre-Tama and some are pre-Pearl. Majestics are Tama-made, if I recall correctly. My first drumset was a mix of Apollo and Majestic, which are Pearl and Majestic brands, respectively. Different names were distributed to different regions of the USA. Most all of them are a type of mahogany from the Philippines and have a very rounded bearing edge. Some, like your drum and my own Majestics, have a knockoff Gretsch-esque silver sealer that's basically just gray spray paint. Super fun drums and they come in a million different really cool wraps.

Regarding the whale blowhole on the side of the Tom. I had a similar problem with an eBay Tom. I epoxied a wooden dowel in the hole then drilled out the hole size I needed. Works just fine.

Would you recommend using a polishing wheel to bring out extra brightness or will it get ride of the chrome? I'm currently restoring my first kit and your video helped me a lot.

You missed one crucial step when bringing these old Japanese drums back to life...the bearing edges. You'll always have to take some very fine sandpaper and gently smooth out the factory edge, keeping the intended profile. Not a lot of care was taken in the factory on the edges, but cleaning them up will hopefully help the sound. When you have them super smooth, run a little car wax polish over them and buff until smooth. This will help with the head seating and stretching. I collect these old Japanese kits from the mid to late 60's. Depending on what they are branded, they are either pre-Tama or pre-Pearl. Many, many different brand names but they all came out of the same two factories. They can become decent kits with a little love. Coolest wraps too! Yours is Blue Onyx/Agate. Rogers called it Agate, Slingerland called it Onyx.

I've had an idea for some time now to make a snare drum out of stone. I likely don't have the skill or resources necessary to pull it off, but I thought that you might be interested in tackling such a project.

I'm in the process of investigating the replacement of my tension rod swivel nuts as well, and I've noticed that the swivel nuts that these old kits came with, have a spring retention collar on them. The ones that you replaced yours with don't. I've noticed this as well, and before I pull the trigger... I wanted to know if you've had any issue with the spring coming off during a head change? If not yet... I'm guessing that you will eventually???

have any tips on repairing a big gouge/dent in the resonant side bearing edge on a floor tom? not sure if I should use bondo or wood filler or epoxy? I was bummed to finally pull my kit out of my parent's basement after almost 10 years in storage and find a 1 inch gouge like it got dropped. :-(

Damn $15 ain't bad. There's an antique mall/flea market by me that has a 3 floor toms, a super beat up snare, kick drum, and two toms (one is a toy) but the majority of them are $25 except the kick is 40. And these drums are missing all sorts of hardware like lugs, reso rims, legs, etc.

i used to have just the bass drum to a majestic kit. i traded it to a friend who sold it to a local music store for 20 bucks. pretty sure the music store still has it for sale for $100. about 5 years later.

Does the Lithium Grease help keep the tension lugs not detune as often?

Wondering if this was one of those older MIJ drums. Tension rods/nuts on them were oddball: they were almost M5, but with a coarser thread pitch (0.9) than regular M5 bolts. So you pretty much have to steal the parts off another drum, fabricate your own, or do the smart thing like David did and swap out both the nuts and the rods. Also wouldn't surprise me if the Groove Percussion nuts/rods were M6, rather than the #12-24 (7/32" in, or "M 5.8" in Pearl-speak) that David bought here and most drums come with. M6 is slightly larger in diameter than #12-24. In some ways, M6 would make life easier: M6 gets used everywhere: cars, bicycles, motorcycles, electronics, etc., so hardware stores carry them, and you can get them with any sort of head style you want: slotted, Phillips, Allen Key, hex wrench, etc. #12-24 machine screws are the white whales of the fastener world--drums seem to be the only thing that use them, and hardware stores rarely stock them. You have to go to either a drum store or to the hardware gods--mcmaster.com/ --to get them. What's weird about drums is that the screws holding the lugs to the shell are often themselves #12-24, not just the tension rods. So you can't even get _those_ from a hardware store, even though they look like regular Phillips screws :-( On the plus side, it does mean that in a pinch, you can take a Dremel to a tension rod and use that to replace a missing lug screw. Advice for those refurbishing old drums: keep a screw gauge and a few different sizes of nuts and machine screws (6-32, 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 12-24, M4, M5, M6) floating around--it'll save you a trip to the hardware store or to Guitar Center/Sam Ash. Also be prepared for the guys at Guitar Center to look at you like you have two heads if you start talking thread pitch and diameter with them :-) (For some reason, I find all of this stuff fascinating :-) )

I want to paint and clear coat them, but I want to do it right. can anyone please give a step by step guide. how many coats of paint? what clear coat to use, how many coats, and when do I sand? I can find basic info for doing on this on just wood, but I want some tips specific to drums. I would appreciate any information.

TIL: Check your nuts for threads. Tangentially related, I was building a mobile clamp rack and one of the decking screws I was using to put it together didn't have any threads either. That was a much easier problem to fix though. But hey, free T-shirt.
