Today I have an old Rogers Holiday from the 1960's from my buddy John. He found this kit on Facebook Marketplace for a killer deal, but of course it had been sitting for ages and needed a quick refresh.
I did glance over the buffing process, mainly because I'm still a noob… But first you want to clean all the dirt and debris off the shell. I didn't bother with removing the badges since they’re made from solid metal, but if they were a thinner regular style badge, or a badge with paint on them, I would take them off. For buffing, I started with the Novus “3” compound with a stiff pad, then went to the “2” compound with the same pad. I then wiped off any excess compound and switched to a wool pad and used a carnauba wax just to really bring out the shine. Then for the last step I used the Novus “1” spray to wipe off any haze from the wax. This spray also claims to repel dust, so that's cool too.
Other things to consider/things I didn't show:
-I didn't paint the inside of the shells, but if you need to match a paint color, you can bring a shell into a paint store and they can help you match the color.
-The tom mount looks crusty when I show fixing it, but I did clean it up afterwards
-I did buff the inlay on the bd hoop before painting it.
-I painted the new hoop with the same paint I used on the old hoop, just so the sheen was the same
-Check out this video for installing inlays on a hoop: • Restoring a Vintage Ta...
-Some vinyl doesnt like to stick to coated heads, but I did a secret technique to make it stick.

This kit came out pretty good! By no means a museum quality restoration, but makes a killer little player kit! I did glance over a couple things, you can find some more details in the description.

EVERYONE DO NOT USE PARAFFIN WAX ON WOOD EDGES!!! David please add a warning. Petroleum based wax will destroy wood shells and that should be noted. If you want to use a wax a) don't, instead get the edge recut b) use 100% beeswax if you must

I'm the owner of this beautiful kit. I got it for almost nothing (when you consider the price for this kit with a matching snare). I also knew these needed some TLC and David immediately came to mind. I texted him within hours of getting home with the kit. (When the seller sent me pics of the kit, I immediately left the house, cash in hand as I know how aggressive buyers can be!) He did a superb job and his attention to detail is amazing. I used the kit on a gig for the first time last night and they sound as good as they look. David is the man! Thanks for your hard work and dedication 🥰

Rogers are one of my favourite Drum companies. I’ve only played one once, but they were very similar to my Pork Pie PigLite set. I absolutely love acrylic Drums for there projection and resonance, so to play a wooden set that had similar characteristics, was absolutely incredible. Their hardware seems like it was so ahead of most if not all the other companies at the time. I’m assuming you know, but just incase, you should never use more than two tension screws on the Tom mount. It was designed for two to push against the metal ball that is apparently egg shaped so it pushes against the inside of the holder and stays in place.

Nice work! I bought my '66-'67 Holiday kit with Champagne Sparkle wrap in 1983.14x5 metal Dynasonic snare and 20/16/13/12. All for a whopping $300. I still have it, and it was my workhorse gig and recording kit for decades. I made a few changes though, as by the late 80's who wanted that Sparkle wrap? I stripped it all off, and the drums actually sounded better without the wrap and all the glue. Of course ten years later the kit became "vintage" and I thought "oh well I'm never going to sell them anyway". I also swapped out the old Swivomatic tom mounts and used Gauger RIMS mounts with Yamaha hardware. (Pro tip: Yamaha tom arms fit Rogers tom mounts, and vice versa. I went all-Yamaha only because I was installing the RIMS anyway.) I rarely used the 13" tom so the single 12" was mounted off a cymbal stand, avoiding extra holes in the bass drum for a Yammie mount. In the early 90's I found a 24" bass drum of the same vintage, already stripped of its wrap, and added that to the ensemble. I of course wanted a 14" floor tom, but that size has always been rare. So I faked one by stripping an old Tama Superstar rack tom and adding legs (the Superstar lugs resemble Rogers from a distance). That gave me the option of a 20/14/12 kit or a 24/13/16. Both kits still sound better than almost any other kit I've played. 🥁

15:45 This is something you did that wasn't mentioned, but I noticed it and I think it's a fantastic tip for when you're working on shells that are supported on a piece of wood by a vice grip- Screw down the shells into the wood through one of the hardware holes to keep it from wobbling around while you buff, sand, etc.! I never thought of doing this, and when I restored my Ludwig kit, it was a pain in the ass to work on the shells because they were moving around so much. I'm definitely using this trick next time I clean up some old drums.

I'm the owner and you're correct; David takes excellent care in everything he does. I didn't want the insides painted as I wanted to preserve.the original paint. And the hoop inlay was left off as I know Champagne Sparkle from that era is difficult to match up. I can assure you, David did a class A job on my kit!

Great video. I've cosmetically restored a number of old drums, some of which were really filthy. I've found that L.A.'s Awesome Cleaner dissolves grease and other stuff from chrome hardware really well; Bon Ami 1886, which has only fine silica powder and soap, polishes chrome very well and gets built-up stuff off without penetrating the chrome (stay away from other abrasive cleansers, which have chemicals and harsher abrasives, such as Bartender's Friend); rust on chrome hardware will come off with a little bit of elbow grease and some QuickGlo Chrome Cleaner and polish (others may work as well, but I"ve only used QuickGlo); WD40 to remove stickers without much scraping (works really well on paper stickers as it soaks through to the adhesive), but you have to clean it off afterwards; and Pledge will polish wrap finishes and painted wood hoops very well if they are in good condition - just note it will make them slick so you'll have to hold on to your drums tightly after you use it. I have also found waxing the bearing edges on old drums with a good furniture paste wax (not Pledge, the kind sold in a flat can) also helps - the edges are clean and slick after polishing and the drums seem to tune easier. Just be sure to be careful polishing the edges with exposed wood, as the polishing cloth could snag and pull out a bit of the edge. Not a problem on old drums with paint slathered all over the edges and the inside of the drums! I have also used it on the edges of a modern birch Tama set and I believe it helped the drums tune easier and sound more lively. Maybe that's a subjective drum voodoo hack for you to destroy in a future video! Keep up the good work!

I use the aluminum foil technique for chrome myself. I'll suggest another product that works extremely well which is "Barkeepers Friend." It is a dry powder and comes in a can like Ajax and Comet household cleaners. I give the parts and even my cymbals a bath and use a toothbrush or cotton wash cloth. It will clean and polish chrome, brass, bronze, copper and stainless surfaces. Rinse then dry and I think you'll be impressed with the results.

Talking about why you take the drums completely apart: My dad has a little side business, in which he deep cleans and restores drums. The difference between an in tact surface clean and a deconstructed deep clean is like night and day. Compounding and waxing your shells, cleaning and polishing hardware, even small things like putting some lemon oil on the inside of the shells, every little thing you do, will make an insane difference between an “old kit” and a “vintage kit.”

i used to looooove cleaning vintage kits/drums when i bought them, late 90's, early 2000's. i'd put on jazz albums and take everything apart, basic clean everything, re-assemble, re-tune. so fun, such a good time-killer. was mostly into 60's Ludwigs, but did end up with some 50's/60's Gretsch, one single 60's Slingerland COB snare, a 60's Yamaha kit, even have 1 single 14" Leedy floor tom (of all things...) but never ended up getting ANY Rogers stuff. a lot of it looked pretty cool, but it was always a little pricier (along with Grestch) at that time. the swivomatic hardware was apparently simultaneously awesome and awful, lol. people were always looking for those longboard pedals...

Fantastic job as always! I want a kit like this for my studio. I have a *big,* modern DW Collector's Series kit (13"x9" rack, 18"x18" floor, 24"x18" kick and a 24"x14" kick), a good collection of cymbals and several different snares but I want to add a slightly smaller, vintage style kit like this. Like a Rogers, Ludwig, Gretsch. I think between two "house" kits like that, I'd have most of the bases covered from bebop jazz and Motown to modern rock and metal and everything in between.

For cleaning Chrome use Aluminum Foil and regular White Vinegar and if you'd like a little bit of table salt to help with the scrubbing, the vinegar eats/dissolves rust and gunk super fast without damaging the Chrome finish. It works bc White Vinegar is a weak acetic acid, and acetic acid is an excellent rust remover, but it'll cut through more than just rust and rust stains though, it also works on hard water stains, lime scale, calcified deposits in AC units, shower stalls and bath tubs etc. It's like CLR/Calcium Lime and Rust remover you can buy, its just 100 times cheaper. Just be sure if you're using it on metals like Iron or Steel to wipe then down with a Baking Soda and Water solution to neutralize the acid in the White Vinegar, or else it can eat into the metal. White Vinegar has been my go to rust remover and cleaner for years, I highly recommend it. 👍👍

Now I am very biased as an owner of a '68 Rogers Holiday, but I believe the Rogers kits from that decade are the best sounding kits I've ever heard. Chose Rogers after researching several vintage brands of that era and haven't looked back. Great video, David!

I don't know if it would damage the paint but, for dry adhesive, hairspray works like a charm.

Nevr-Dull is the best product I personally use to clean rust, pitting, and shines after a wipe with a towel, I really don't recommend using aluminum foil or steel wool, as it leaves small scratches behind that eventually make it harder to up keep your hardware. Great video BTW

Big fan of the channel. You always blow me away at how seamlessly you edit straight into demoing the kit. Awesome

That’s an absolutely beautiful Drum Set. Just incase I can help save anyone’s Tom holder, as I couldn’t tell if he fixed what the previous owner had done. You should never use more than two screws on the Swiv-o-matic metal ball mount. I know that some people think that because there are several spots for screws, that means you should use them. That was just designed so that you could use it on either side. I saw an interview where one of the creators mentioned this, and I believe he said they realized you could just spin it around. The reason for only using two, is because the ball is actually egg shaped apparently. So you only use a couple rods right next to each other to push the ball into the socket making it nice and snug. If you are using more than that, you’re not getting a proper hold, and will eventually strip it. I know in the video he replaced the ones that were in there, but I couldn’t tell if he used the correct way of doing it. I’m sure most Drum nerds know this, but as the video shows, some don’t. So I’m just trying to help keep these amazing pieces of history like new.

No wonder my leftovers tasted so funny, that Tupperware off-gassing really made the washers and lugs taste funny. I knew it. Looks killer all cleaned up!
