Another old ‪@Rolingmetal‬ video. In this one, I fix the tailstock alignment issue with a cheap Chinese MT2 reamer. At the same time I'm also looking at a similar problem with my vintage blue Karger lathe.
Here's the link to the original edit: • Fixing the old lathe's...

I have a very short and hard to find video on my channel showing how I did this. It's in my South Bend Lathe play list. I'm just cleaning my MT-2 tailstock boar up.

I found it, and it looked like I had a similar vfd some time ago. I used to run it with the noisy internal fan disconnected, and at some point it ended with a flash and a bang :)

@@RolingRandom I'm using a ABB VFD on my mill. There is no comparing the two.

you let the 'Magic Smoke ' out of it......@@RolingRandom cheers, Paul....I have been running a Hitachi VFD on a 1.5 hp relative new Lincoln Electric motor....just running at 60 hz....and after probably 15 hours use, the motor has developed issues.....hmmmmm, the VFD is rated for at least 5 hp......and has only been used on this application......more digging into the issue, hope it is not the motor.....I can live with out the VFD......I really enjoyed this video.....I need to ream my 1942 South Bend 13' Me T 3 quill......it looks like a Beaver lived in there at one time.... the Spindle MT 4 is perfect.......and only has .0002" runout...... looking forward to more of your videos.....Paul

I hope this isn't too pedantic, but the part of the tailstock with the morse-taper opening is called the "barrel", or "ram", but not a "quill". A quill is what's on a drill press, which has a rack & pinon feed mechanism (and surrounds the spindle). A lathe's tailstock barrel is screw fed, which also makes it a ram.

It's maybe a bit pedantic. But I had to look up that word, so I learned something. And for me that's what youtube is all about. I did know by now that it's a tailstock ram :)

What would you say it's called on a mill?
@RolingRandom

Most people seem to call it a quill just like on the drill press. But now I assume there is a better word for that. Go ahead and educate me :)

@@RolingRandom it's a tail stock quill. However, it's not drill bit. Their called twist drills. Potato patado, who cares? It's a drill driver not a bit driver. Jumbo shrimp, military intelligence. In Alabama a Mountain Dew and Pepsi are called Cokes?

@@davidrule1335 : A mill often, but not always, has a quill. As for the tail stock, no, it is not a "tail stock quill". A quill has a rack & pinon feed mechanism. Generally, lathe tailstocks have a screw fed ram, but no quill. "Their [sic] called twist drills." Sometimes, but that is just a shortened version of _twist drill bits_ . So, yes, they *are* _drill bits_ . "Twist" is just one type of drill bit. There are forstner drill bits, spade drill bits, spoon drill bits, masonry drill bits, etc, which are *all* drill _bits_ . None of them are just "drills", even if _they're_ at times simply called that. As for sodas, where I grew up, we called them "pop"... :)
