Answering a frequently asked question/comment that has been brought up here: Yes, Dumbledore left Harry in the Dursley's care because of the love charm Lily cast during her death. I'm very aware of this, actually! What I'm arguing in this video is that that is not a good enough excuse to leave Harry in the care of people who emotionally and physically abused him. That's the point of me drawing attention to that aspect of the story, to lay out again that people saying things are for Harry's good are often not actually keeping Harry's best interests at heart. Abuse isn't forgiven because it was really for Harry's benefit, it's still abuse and I don't think we should forgive that in any way.

ProblemsofaBookNerd i do get where you’re coming from but the whole bloodline connection kept him completely out of bounds and practically invisible to Voldemort while under petunia’s “care” until he turned 17. Yes they were terrible but that was the reasoning behind it. I mean I get it abusive upbringings are horrible but in this fictional world it would have been weird for Harry to have been brought up with lovely folks who told him the truth about his family. It also eventually connects him to Voldemort because they both had horrible childhoods but were complete opposites in the end.

Besides, he's Albus fucking Dumbledore. He could send a howler or something years ago, like when he did at OotP, and Dursley would be shaking in their boots. But no, he only showed up when Harry was a teen and was almost out of the house, anway.

I am very much in the camp of Dumbledore manipulates everyone that he meets! The fact that he left Harry in a home that he knew that he would be abused in, was shocking. So yes, even in the Beasts films there's the hints of Dumbledore manipulating Newt (and even Theseus a little as well - when he tells Theseus to not go after Grindelwald or something along those lines, knowing that Theseus would likely not listen)

2 things: 1. Your thoughts on how house Ravenclaw is viewed is SO special to me because i agree the intellect is overly emphasized when in reality we are just very obsessive and become fascinated with our own abstract interests. Like I’m a Ravenclaw and I’m obsessive over very specific types of knowledge and acquire those types of knowledge whenever possible, but I wouldn’t say I’m classically intelligent or studious. I study what I want to study 😂 2. “I want jk Rowling banished from the internet” same

Didn’t Dumbledore have to leave Harry with the Dursley’s due to the enchantment Lily left within her blood-line? Harry being around Petunia helps to enhance the protective charm Lily put on Harry, at least that’s what I’ve heard. 🤷‍♀️

Has it ever occurred to you that there must also have been some muggle teachers who had 7 years to notice that the Dursleys' adopted son came to school in hand-me down uniform and was half the size of their biological child, both of which would suggest to any modern practitioner that one might need to ask a few inoccuous questions and maybe get social services involved?! Now, to be fair on these fictional adults, Harry was at school in the 80s, and safeguarding then wasn't what it is now, but I still find it a convenience that, as Harry's welfare was overlooked by wizarding adults, he was also failed by the muggle adults who spent as much time with him in a week as the Dursleys! All so Dumbledore could protect him longterm and preserve his integrity against Voldemort when the time came!

You are right about Comic Con. Or just with the popularity of cosplaying. If the series was set today, wizards in cloaks wouldn't be as suspicous. That said, Vernon still wouldn't know what Comic Con is. It is pretty obvious that Dumbledor manipulates people to get what he wants, and prepare Harry for the big battle. There's a popular russian theory called "Albus Dumbledor's Big Game". I don't think it's ever been translated to english, but it goes into detail of the first 3 books, with how Dumbledor prepares things, and wants to get Harry involved. It is a good theory. About the switching points of view - yeah, it is kind of strange, particularly during the Quidditch match. Pretty sure it does not happen at any point in the future books. Regarding the Philosopher's Stone challanges - I think you and I can agree that Dumbledor, knowing what was going on, planned for the Golden Trio to all go after the Stone, and expclisitly set up these challanges for them. But, do you think he originally planeed for Neville to join them? Could have the Devils Snare been based around Neville's exsellent knowledge and skills in Herbology? 35:50 umm, no, that's where I believe you are wrong. Dumbledor didn't say "I didn't know you know Nickolas Flamel". He said, "Oh, so you know...". This is a case where I prefer to examine Dumbledor's EXACT words, and not a paraphrasing of them. You see, the way I view Dumbledor, he never lies. But, he can omision information, and he can present information differently, using the power of language. Like, in the second book, he says - "Mrs Norris has been paralysed. But how - I can not say". The words "I can not say" can be interpreted two ways: "I don't know", or "I know, but I cant tell you". And I believe that Dumbledor does know. It's the same with, in book 3, did Dumbledor know about the Marauders being animagi? Dumbledor never says. "I never knew they were animagi". What he does say is, "It's impressive they were able to keep it a secret from me", but he doesn't specify for how long. So yeah. Even if you don't agree with me, I still recommend you to analyze Dumbledor's words more closely, and analyze the exact words, not the implied meaning. 38:40 at the very least, Dumbledor does talk about this in book 5. How he probably should have answered Harry's question, but just couldn't make himself do it.

one of the things that i think about often about the harry potter series in general is how most of the adults never got past their teenager years, like they still are clinging to that to dear life (not just the bad stuff but also the good). full grown ass people are still bitter and proud and never forgot about shit they did/felt when they were teenagers, is really that hard to move on? also most of the adults just truly enjoy being assholes to CHILDREN and like to cause emotional abuse and hurt them and thats really never confronted on the books. yeah, most of the people who do this are hated for it, but its treated like a normal thing and its so messed up. in conclusion: more than half of the people that are adults in this universe need to grow the fuck up.

Vivian D you are truly speaking my language here. I talk about this a bit in my Prisoner of Azkaban video (since that’s where we see Lupin as an adult who has grown up and Snape as an adult who... uh... has not at all) but I’ll definitely be getting into it even more once it’s time to read and discuss Order of the Phoenix because almost all the adults in that book are intolerable. They truly haven’t ever grown up! It’s just wild because I try to imagine still holding a grudge against my middle school bully and I don’t even remember his name. I feel like I forgave so much of what the adults in this series pull when I was a kid because they were acting the way a 12-year-old expects them to but now that I’m an adult it is WILD to read this series and not constantly go “oh my god pLEASE tell me someone here got at least a little more mature in the past couple of decades of their life!!”

In some ways it makes sense since so many of the adults in this series were basically emotionally scarred in their adolescence and early 20s due to the war. Sirius because of prison, Snape because of his choices and also I think because he’s spent his entire adulthood in the place where he made those bad choices. Out of all of them Remus is the only one who has had a proper adult life on his own. It’s a very HARD life but he had the opportunity to grow up. Also Remus is also just a great person ....

The little rant about your negative feelings towards Dumbledore because of him leaving Harry with the Dursleys upset me just a bit. 100% I understand where you are coming from.. but you should consider the realism of the situation. As an abused child, I can say there isn't much that onlookers could do at that time. Yeah, it could be reported, but you can't just take a child from their home if you don't find their situation to be suitable. Also consider the times... physical abuse ALWAYS had priority over emotional abuse. Emotional abuse was typically swept under the rug. Yes, they are wizards and this is fiction so they could have done whatever they wanted.. but as you said, Harry being miserable was sort of the point. I just feel like you weren't being fair to the onlookers. There wasn't much they could do, realistically. P.S. I loved your reading vlog and didn't mean any hate from this comment. Just trying to bring in a different perspective :)
@ProblemsofaBookNerd
@ProblemsofaBookNerd 5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to have a different opinion! I think my problem stems from the fact that it seems like Harry staying with the Dursleys isn't really due to the law? As in, Dumbledore delivers Harry to their house and leaves a note instead of anyone else, so Muggle law doesn't really come into play when it comes to who has legal guardianship over Harry. In my opinion that means that he could have been placed in the care of anyone. I could be absolutely off there, but based on my knowledge of legal guardianship it seems like that absolutely has never come into play for Harry and the Dursleys. I definitely don't think there was much onlookers could do, but McGonagall and Dumbledore knowing the Dursleys and then them knowing how he is treated just makes me feel not all that great because they have total power over the Dursleys. They gave Harry to them and they could remove Harry from that care. But like I said, I am glad to have other viewpoints! And I know that realistically my opinion isn't totally fair (especially to characters like... Mrs. Figg or even the Weasleys) but considering how frustrated I am with Dumbledore's treatment of Harry in general I just see his part in how Harry was raised as something that he likely could have changed if he had had Harry's best interests at heart instead of the best interests of the wizarding world and his long-running plan. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, though!

New subscriber and great video by the way! I do agree with you that Dumbledore is very manipulative but also get why Dumbledore said he had to stay at the Dursley’s. It Really was probably the best place for him just because of the fact that Voldemort was still out there and staying/returning to the Dursley’s kept Harry safe from Voldemort because of his moms protection spell.

@ProblemsofaBookNerd
@ProblemsofaBookNerd 5 жыл бұрын
Michelle I actually feel like the Order currently isn’t active! Like, I’m guessing they stopped being an active group around when Voldemort disappeared the first time and they only started meeting regularly again when Voldemort came back in Goblet of Fire. So in my opinion, Charlie might know that the order exists but he wasn’t a member yet because it wasn’t necessary for him to know the inner workings until then.

I grew up and, to my surprise, Pokemon Go came out and I am actually a Pokemon trainer now. I even got my old boss into Pokemon so she always asks me questions or talks to me about updates. A thing that's always bothered me about the first book and how Dumbledore left Harry with the Dursley's (besides the fact that he did in the first place) is actually *how* he left Harry with the Dursley's. In the middle of the night, IN LATE OCTOBER, and just, in a bundle on the doorstep to be found in the morning with a letter. It's incredibly irresponsible and like?? never addressed?????. Like I'd be just a bit happier about it if the book just mentioned "oh he put a warming charm on the child" but NO we can't have THAT. and neither McGonagall nor Hagrid even mention that hey maybe just leaving a toddler on the front doorstep is a bad plan???

I wonder how Sirius is going to play into that theme you've noticed of good/bad families. On the one hand, he is born into an awful family. On the other hand he does get somewhat "adopted" (or at least accepted) into a good family- the Potters, while Regulus does not and becomes a Death Eater. I'm really enjoying hearing your thoughts on this series so far!

I enjoyed this vlog so much and it's made me want to reread the series as well. I can't remember the last time I actually picked up the books rather than turning to fanfic when I'm in HP mood, so it's definitely past time for me. "I don't want JK Rowling to tell me because I want JK Rowling to disappear from the internet" I straight up cackled. I feel that so dang hard. The thing about Harry not having a home until he's 11 makes me hate the trend in a lot of fanfic to almost romanticize and fetishize Harry's abuse by really explicitly describing even more awful and graphic abuse than is seen in the books. It's just really gross and upsetting to read and I can't understand why people write it. He had it bad enough stop making it even worse! Have you seen the theory about Charlie's friends that they're a bunch of grad students who just wanted a break from writing their theses? Because it's one of my favorite theories of all time. Picking up an illegal dragon in the middle of the night is OF COURSE ten times better than sitting here and trying to finish this stupid paper. OF COURSE.

I think it’s partly that I’m getting older, I really liked him when the first few books came out back when I was in middle school (I’m dating myself lol).

I totally think that my feelings have changed on Dumbledore because I'm getting older! Like, I read these books the first time when I was 12 and I totally forgave Snape and loved Dumbledore. It's only now that I'm an adult that I look at those characters and start to question why I'm supposed to think they make good decisions because, as an adult reader, I don't understand how they treat the literal children in their care.

ProblemsofaBookNerd As an adult that has now been paid to take care of children, I cannot even begin to imagine treating a child the way Dumbledore treats his students. And don’t even get me started on Snape!! He abuses Neville and Harry relentlessly. One of the first things that made me seriously question Dumbledore’s judgment is the fact that he allows Snape to teach children. I don’t think I would mind all this if Dumbledore weren’t so idealized, and if I wasn’t expected to forgive Snape. Still love so much about the novels, of course, but I wish those characters had been depicted a bit differently.

@@lifefullofwords "I don’t think I would mind all this if Dumbledore weren’t so idealized, and if I wasn’t expected to forgive Snape." This. The problem IMO is not Dumbledore being manipulative per se, but that it isn't something that narrative (and even more the movies and discussions in any form around HP in general; except some discussions in fandom) has drawn attention to and characterized it as such. I actually really enjoy his manipulative ways from character standpoint, it makes sense him being so focused on end goals, detached from others and thus only being able to see other people as means for "the greater good" because of different scale of his experiences and unlimited (sociopolitical) power he has. But it has to be pointed out, especially in MG/YA books that are HP and not idealized. The same with Snape and idealization of romantic (unrequited) love as something that explains and excuses basically everything.

Please continue this reread project! I know JK Rowling has done a lot of shitty pronouncements, but I really think you can discuss it in your videos and also reframe the series, like you talked about Lovecraft Country and its celebration of diversity opposed to Lovecraft himself. Don't let your love for HP die because of everything that is happening. Please, think about this.

The "fat people are evil"-theory is just not true. Petunia is slim. Good fat people: Hagrid, Mrs. Weasly and professor Sprout. Being raised by a bad family that you have no pull to emulate and getting other role models later on, helps. Also there are plenty of examples of people breaking out of the patterns of their families. Also: I like to see some of the ideas JK has and do like that she is active on the internet. If you like to interpret her work in other ways than she does, do that. Love the series and I like this walk through with your thoughts attached (even though I do not agree with everything) :-).

I agree that there are some good fat people, but the terminology used to describe them is usually much kinder. Like Mrs. Weasley being described as "plump" or Hagrid in general just being big. When it comes to evil characters, JKR tends to use words that demonize weight to indicate that their kind of fat is the bad kind. They're described as "porsine", she details exactly all the ways their bodies are horrible and deserve to be ridiculed, and characters like Dudley or Crabbe and Goyle get into trouble specifically because they're considered glutinous (Dudley's tongue getting oversized because he ate candy, Dudley getting a pig tail because he steals food, Crabbe & Goyle being put to sleep because they ate sweets even when they were clearly not safe, etc.). The descriptions get worse with each book, and Dudley is only redeemable once he loses all the weight. I'm not saying there aren't good fat people in the series, I'm saying I think JKR sees fatness as an inherent flaw in characters and I'm not a fan of that in the least. I hope that helps explain a bit where I'm coming from!

ProblemsofaBookNerd - I think I get what you are getting at. However angling the physical appearance in a negative light is one of the tools JK in general uses to create a sort of antipathy in the reader (a rather classical move from her side). E.g. Petunia’s appearance isn’t described kindly either. She has plenty of fat people she does describe in a kind manor. And the infractions you are mentioning go beyond liking food - they are either hurtful towards the surrounding people (like establishing dominance over Harry, in Dudley’s case - or eating Harry’s birthday cake in front of him) or arrogantly stupid (like finding two cakes placed in a way that should arouse suspicion and still consuming them). I don’t agree that it can be considered fat-shaming, when it is not the fat itself that should trigger the reader to look down at the character and I do not read the same virtue of being slim that you spot in the books. For Dudley it is more of a symbolic transformation (to me), where HIS mean ways translated into his fat (which isn’t the same as fat=mean) and when he started to get more mature and get a slight grip on these issues, he also lost weight.
