It sometimes amazes me on what gets commented on in my videos sometimes, such as my 'dirty engine compartment', no worries one thing at a time. I thought I would touch on some of the comments in both the transmission fluid change and differential fluid change videos with this video as there were some good points brought up. I appreciate your comments and your input so keep it coming.

FWD fuse is a great tip, so many people I talk to didn't know they had this. Part of this may be because it is only mentioned briefly (in my case) in the manual's section on the spare tire, because the car should be switched to FWD when the donut is on to prevent strain on the AWD system.

Great video Eric. I believe the clutch packs or "MPT" on the 4EAT Subaru's are to send power to the rear. That's the reason you can put it in "FWD" mode as the transfer duty solenoid cuts off fluid pressure in a sense, and the ability to allow those clutch packs to send power to the rear. Also, you can only put an automatic Subaru in FWD mode. The manual transmission Subaru's are always AWD no matter what.

yes that would be a worn clutch or throwout bearing on the clutch fork, a full clutch kit contains a clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Any resistance in the shifter with the engine spinning over idle speed indicates a worn clutch or bearing not applying pressure to the splines on the pressure plate (which releases the clutch from the flywheel). And cheap i mean, a flyheel is around 50-100 USD and a clutch kit is about 100-200 USD not counting mechanic costs.

Respect the fact that you don't care if your engine is dirty. But oil is the enemy of most rubber parts, keeping them clean greatly extends their life. And if you live in an area that uses salt, that attacks everything in the engine bay. A clean engine is a happy engine, and is a pleasure to work on. It also increases the resale value of the car. Stay dirty to me means I "stay dirty" not the car.

technically the point of a syncro is to match rotational speed of all gears so you can shift from one to the other without pausing in netural (like on an 18wheeler or lorry for our UK friends). Its not quick shifts per se, its clutch timing. You can shift fast, as long as your not crashing the clutch into the flywheel. That jolts the input shaft and over time cause harmonic vibrations (which can shatter a gear). A clutch is a transmission brake, but works backwards of a wheel normal brake.

my ex BMW 530i had a SERIOUS trans problem. at first it was mild, we got the fluid changed then right after the fluid change, the trans was completely shot! it was to the point where u press the gas, rpm goes all the way up to near red then CLUNK and it would start moving. a last ditch effort we got some Lucas trans fix and put it in. Sure enough the trans felt 90% better! and it stayed better for years after. it was a Miracle in a bottle. I think it helped by thickening the fluid like you said

Having it dirty won't hurt anything, I'm just a clean freak about things on my truck. But I let it get pretty dirty before I bother cleaning anything under there, usually something I do in the spring to get all the winter road crap out of it, and at the same time I spray the entire underside with the engine cleaner stuff (I do all this at those spray it yourself car washes) and wash that off really good too. We don't use salt here in CO, and our cars don't really rust, but I do it anyway.

Eric, its probably better to say if you spin one wheel forward and the other wheel also spins forward it is a limited slip diff. On a regular diff someone looking at the other side as you spin your wheel clockwise will also say their wheel is spinning clockwise.

Just FYI, I believe the old 4EAT's like in this video use the MPT Clutch system to send power to the rear. It uses a transfer duty solenoid and fluid pressure with the MPT system to send power to the rear. By putting in the fuse, it cuts off the fluid to the MPT, killing power going to the rear. The front should be mechanically driven.

Its too allow slipping as the inside of the pressure clamps. The main side is on the flywheel and the back side is facing a machined and smooth surface of the pressure plate. as the bearing retracts (pedal out) the inside pushes the free spinning clutch into the flywheel (engine) and it will slip slightly as it clamps tight. This slipping allows the transmission to speed up to the engine rpm (versus the internal syncro speed which is usually around 400 rpm at idle) all in the space of a second.

Thanks for your clarification. By my logic, gears are just a block of metal spinning in oil but then there are some that claim of gearbox breakdowns/blown out by wear and tear (old Skodas) or too much power when doing a couple of drag races. I have a Dual Mass flywheel which is more of a concern to me than the clutch or the gearbox itself

It was then 15 years old and not previously serviced there he really didn't want to change the fluid so he took it for a drive 1st. Anyway he did mention about older/thicker fluid 'holding it together' anyway about 6 months later i did it again inc. filter myself and so far all is well

a lot of new cars now, such as the cvt Mitsubishis, some Nissans and others use 'fill for life' fluids if your owners/service manual has no service specs for them, this may be the case, however, if you do need to do any work to the transmission, be warned that the fluids are very expensive, the Mitsubishi one for example, is around 800 dollars a can, or about 80 dollars a litre.

#2 - I run the car for a week then removed some more of the fluid (about 1/2 a cup) and put more lucas in and ran the car again. As it leaked down some i added more lucas for a month or so and then it stopped 90% of the leaking! It was really leaking bad before using the lucas. It has been 3 years and still doing good. I have not added any lucas in those 3 years. I have just been adding regular power steering fluid. This is a 91 nissan. I can say for sure lucas does work on 1991 nissan seals.

" It's rust protection" my thoughts exactly! If the rear main engine or transmission seal leaks on one of my cars, I just consider it an automatic undercarriage oiler. As long as it isn't leaking so bad that I have to add a liter a week, I'm totally content with it. Although most of my vehicles don't have cats anymore. Oil dripping on a properly working super hot cat might not be a good idea lol

check you injectors to see if they are working or not .. unplug the injectors one by one if when you unplug a injector and thier is no change in the cars behavior then it may be bad. double check the injector by checking for Resistance with a multi meter is theirs resistance then its good. also check the plug and see if its sending voltage to the injector with a led bases test light (regular test light can be used as second option) if light pulses then when cranking then its plug is working

on a modern transmission you shouldn't pause, just one smooth movement to the next gear and let the clutch pedal out smoothly .... ideal shifts would catch the engine on the way down (rpm drop) before it reaches its idle RPM (700-1000 on modern cars) other wise you will dog the next gear and cause slow damage to the clutch and flywheel (both at least replaceable cheap but not easily).

#1 - I agree the dirt on the outside of the engine does not hurt anything. It just does not look good. Now lucas power steering stop leak does really work very good! I had a bad power steering leak that nothing would help! On my nissan. I used 3 different kinds of stop leak including the split bottle kind. I thought i was going to have to put alot of work and money to fix the leak because it was comming from the rack and pinion! As soon as i put the lucus in it stopped 70% of the leaking.

Very, very, very rarely...... they just spin in oil all the time. There are 1950 car's that still have full original trans. Unless you seriously smash the trans at 100+ into to reverse its damn near impossible to kill one. The only concern is viscosity breakdown of the oil due to heat. But thats also a long process (5 years in hilly, mountain terrain like New Hampshire, and 10 in normal driving.......... and 5 for heavy interstate/high speed travel).

You better make an awesome 300th video :) (not telling other 299 are bad videos) :) Transmissions... well. we have now DSG, 7 to 9 speed with dual dry clutches, they are a pain to service and most aren't serviceable at all except the clutches, I never serviced a regular 4 speed automatic, but I did took apart a few DSG (VW and Porsche) just to know how they work, and what I mostly see are manual piloted gearboxes, the clutch is centrifugal and hydraulics to mimic the shift stick.
@aodox
@aodox 12 жыл бұрын
nothing wears at all, a manual is a collection of gears on shafts. All they do is spin in the oil and the oil is for lube. Unless you grind gears all the time or shatter a gear you will rarely see stuff in the oil. And, the clutch sit on the engine, under the pressure plate on the flywheel. Its a dry system (well unless you have a rear main seal leak.)

To my understanding, when the clutch pedal is pressed, the clutch disc is released from the flywheel and onto the pressure plate to stop the rotation of the gears in order to engage smoothly. So what I think is the problem, is that the back side of the clutch (the one facing the pressure plate) is worn out. Is my theory correct?

not even remotely. When the pedal goes down, it pushes the throwout bearing into the pressure plate spilnes and the inside of the pressure plate moves outward. and the clutch will start to freespin on the shaft. The gears do not stop moving (not full speed) in modern syncro'd trans. They move to allow smooth power band. When you come off the pedal, the fork retracts and the bearing is pushed off the splines by the pressure plate springs. and it clamps the clutch to the flywheel.

So quickly putting it into gear doesn't cause any damages? I press the clutch gently not slamming it through the floor but when I change gears, I hate the fact that it pauses in neutral before going into next gear. Like 1st - neutral - 2nd. There where times where gears changed like cutting butter with absolutely no stopping as if the stick shift was not connected to anything. Would love to have that every time I change gears.

What about the engine additives? Are they any worth? I don't believe they do any good inside the engine; from what i've heard...the engine runs a little better after you put it, but after a while it functions worse then before and you most likely need to rebuild it. What are your experiences with these additives?

Hi Eric, Thanks for your helpful videos. My 1998 Legacy has the opposite problem to torque bind - no drive to the rear wheels. After almost a year of studying forums and asking questions I went ahead and removed the transfer case off the rear of the auto trans. The duty C solenoid was functioning as expected - normally closed, and open with 12v applied to it. I can just hear a tiny leak while blowing through it while in closed position. The metal plate between the valve body and the transmission is weird though - the only way for the oil to get to the solenoid switch and escape out into the main oil chamber is via a TINY hole in the plate. There are no gaskets either side of it. Another strange thing - now, for the first time ever, I have the rear drive shaft actually engaging the front drive shafts. The oil is drained from the transmission, and the clutch pack is somehow engaging. What is causing the clutch pack to disengage when the engine is running?

Hey eric, a bit of a weird question for ya, I have a 1986 Honda City ( 1st gen ) with a Hondamatic transmission, it drives fine except for the fact that it does not use any lower gears except if you select them ( in otherwords start in low move to 2nd, then move to drive, if i select drive from stop it doesnt select low gear by itself and has no kick down on acceleration)its the 3 speed and i have only just bought it, and cannot find any info on how these work or can be adjusted if they can???
