Although the spaghetti-eating sequence is now the best known scene, Walt Disney originally did not want it in the film as he thought it would not be romantic and that two dogs eating spaghetti would look ridiculous. Animator Frank Thomas was against Walt's decision and animated the entire scene himself without any lay-outs. Walt was so impressed with Thomas's work he decided to keep the scene in.

Thomas was the genuine article. With the other 8 "Old Men" of Disney they made a team of talent without which Disney would likely never have been more than a shadow of what they achieved in the golden era of hand animated feature films

29:27 The reason why Jock and Trusty offered matrimony to Lady was because, back in the day, it was scandalous to have a relationship and/or get pregnant with someone of lower class out of wedlock, like Tramp. Jock and Trusty were worried that Lady would get kicked out of her home because of the scandal and her reputation tainted. To save her, they offered Lady their homes and paws-in-marriage to save her from the streets as well as save her reputation. Jock and Trusty really are true loving friends. ❤️

Fun facts: The opening scene where lady is introduced in a hat box is inspired by the way Walt Disney surprised his wife with a new puppy. Also, in the original movie, Trusty did die when crushed by the carriage saving Tramp. It was Walt’s wife that convinced him that kids would be heartbroken and never get over Trusty’s death. So, they rewrote the ending with Trusty alive but injured.

Also, I would suggest The Aristocats, another classic. It was sadly after the point when they stopped using the Ink and Paint Dept, so it looks "rougher" like 101 Dalmatians, but it's still another classic pet movie, and very charming

I think what you’re noticing about it not being annoying, back in the 50s, Disney didn’t disrespect an audience’s intelligence. They had faith that simplicity of storytelling and specificity of character would be enough to sell a concept to an audience.

Honestly, some people think it's weird that they treated two dogs better than their paying customers, but anyone who owns a pet will know that you often connect more easily with a pet than a human. The Tramp has been visiting them every few days since he was born, so for all intents and purposes, he's their dog. My mother routinely cooks and mixes rice in with the dog food just so the dog has a balanced diet, and has done that for years. So I can totally see them feeding an expensive meal to a couple dogs and having a ton of fun doing so.

@@WisteriaDrake there's also the fact that this movie was set in the Victorian era, and they didn't really sell commercial dog food in wide release until after WWII. Before that, people fed their dogs scraps from their tables, more or less. I've read that in some areas, butcher shops had little meat wagons that would travel through neighborhoods, and people would buy meat scraps to use to feed their pets. Before WWII, there were a few companies out there that made and sold dog biscuits, things like that, but commercially mass-produced dog & cat food didn't become widely available until after the war. So back then, it would have been more in a person's mind that you fed the dogs what you were eating. Since "Butch" was their stray that came to them every few days, they normally saved scraps and bones for him. But because he brought a girl along, they went all out, and gave him their best meal in the restaurant.

As far as “off-beat” requests go, _The Fox & the Hound_ and Disney’s _Robin Hood_ have such special places in my heart. Even though Robin Hood was so low budget they had to re-use animations and character concepts from The Jungle Book (i think when their animation studio was at one of its lowest points?) their character moments still stick in my brain. :) tho don’t quote me on that, i didn’t do my research haha.

I read The Fox and The Hound book when I was really young, my babysitter bought me the book when I was little. At the time I thought that it was going to be exactly like the movie. Boy, I was wrong. The dogs are reversed Cooper ends up killed by his owner because the owner was going to a retirement home. Chief ends up killed by the train. It traumatized me when I read the book. It still scares me on the day how the book was just horrifying

That shot near the end of Trusty lying under the wagon and *totally looking dead* traumatized me in my youth far more than that more notorious scene from "Bambi." Of course, in the next scene we learn he merely broke one of his legs, but it was still a gut punch.

When you mentioned the animation on Trusty's wrinkles I immediately had to think of 'The Fox and the Hound' where they actually animate a puppy hound dog. Despite its story being on the sad side, I really like it. Other recommendations would be 'Robin Hood' and 'The Sword in the Stone', two movies I have very fond memories of - in fact, I can barely imagine Robin Hood as anything other than a human-like fox...

@@jackmeowmeowmeow2177 One of my strongest memories of watching an animated Disney movie in the theaters when I was a child, was watching Fox and the Hound in a packed theater, and every last person bawling their eyes out during that song. I was sitting next to this big, burly, beefy, bearded guy, and he was crying as hard as I was. I think just about everybody has had to live through the pain of giving up a beloved pet at least one time in their lives, or they remember the pain of losing their favorite pet to illness or old age. Everyone can relate to, "Goodbye, may seem forever", and it tears you up inside.

One not-so-fun fact: In the original script for this movie, the people originally wanted Trusty, the bloodhound, to die, but when most of the voice actors and actresses read the script, including actress/singer Peggy Lee broke down and cried, and protested that the kids would be upset and their parents would be devastated and mad if they allowed that to happen, so they changed it to the happy Christmas ending, with Trusty being alive with a broken leg, that we got today. Also, I hated Aunt Sarah for being mean to the dogs.

The Rescuers would be a great one for you to watch. The second one is great too, but the art in the first one is unique and absolutely beautiful (especially during the opening credits). Very sweet stories in both of them as well.

Little thing about the part where Jock and Trusty tried to marry Lady: it’s been assumed that they did that because Lady was pregnant after her night with the Tramp. And they didn’t want her to be a single mother, so they tried to propose, so save her from shame. Idk if that’s even been confirmed tho. Just a theory

I've heard of that, though the puppies seem a bit too young to have been conceived when Lady first stayed with Tramp. (However I've no way to tell the age of the puppies though they seem younger than Lady was when she was gifted so they might be less than 8 weeks old) To more match the times, It could just be that (to mirror the culture of the humans in the time this story is set.) since Lady spent the night with Tramp / was unaccounted for at least 24 hours, she would have a "ruined reputation." Which would make it nearly impossible for Lady to marry. So the friends stepped forward and offered to marry her.

@@ianij99 this isn't even a theory, it's plain fact! in the "the making of lady and the tramp" documentary, they mention this and basically confirm it. it was probably more obvious to 1950's audiences, where spending the night together would be enough to assume that something happened :-)

That is absolutely what happened. This takes place sone time around the turn of the 20th century, single motherhood would have been extremely taboo. Marrying a pregnant woman to “make an honest woman out of her” was considered a massive stroke of honor for a man, many older men and closeted homosexuals did that during the time to help and maintain a sense of societal dignity for themselves and their woman friends.

One of by favorite things about this movie is not only that the animators referenced actual dog movement, but breed-specific behavior. My mom has a Scotland terrier mix and she behaves very much like Jock, even down to the rooster-like crowing bark and the bounce he does when he barks.

According to another KZfaqr, the rat on this film was originally intended to be humanized, similar to the dogs and zoo animals. He was to be something of a mobster/wise guy. The only problem was that he was not intimidating in the slightest. I kinda like the idea that proximity to humans is what has humanized the animals of this setting, even with the zoo animals.

Love how Lady’s voice actor Barbara Luddy went on to voice Merryweather the blue fairy in Sleeping Beauty and Verna Felton was Aunt Sarah a complete opposite character to the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and Flora the red fairy in Sleeping Beauty .. the voices are true classic Disney 😁

It's been ages since I've watched Lady and the Tramp. I didn't realize until I watched this reaction that the voice actors were in both movies. Even in Sleeping Beauty, Flora and Merryweather were a little antagonistic toward each other sometimes lol.

Aunt Sarah absolutely enraged me as a child. I think part of the offense comes from how she immediately has access to Lady's sanctuary because Aunt Sarah is family. Any change in routine would be off-putting, but when you have straight up injustice in your own house, you're particularly outraged. Aunt Sarah is played by Flora, the red fairy from Sleeping Beauty, and Lady is played by Merryweather's voice actress, the blue fairy.

This is part of what many people consider the Golden Age of Disney animation with some truly stunning animation. You can see the attention to detail and the lengths the animators went to. I certainly smiled when you were amazed at the scene of the dogs frolicking in the puddles. Remember, this was all hand drawn, not a computer in sight (about 35 years too soon), Next up includes the Jungle Book (you may have seen that), Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Peter Pan and The Sword in the Stone. All well worth a watch.

Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Fantasia were all made before WWII, long before Lady and the Tramp. Walt couldn't release Fantasia before the fifties because it had stereo sound and theaters didn't have sound systems to play it. The confusion about the release dates comes from the fact that Walt would re-release all his films every ten years or so as a new generation of children came along who had never seen them. The wonder is that the movies were just as new seeming to all children, no matter when they saw the films for the first time.

Stan Frieberg who voiced the beaver was really good at doing the tooth whistle thing, but found the character to have so much dialogue, it started to strain his voice. He ended up using an actual whistle to produce the sounds instead.

Some dark points: It’s been theorized/sub texted that the two alley dogs were so intent on chasing Lady bc she was in heat...that she and Tramp definitely mated after their date, .and that Peg, the older female we meet was used as a breeder after getting too old to show, then dumped. Then there is the family life Tramp described was probably his original home, but the family was lower income so would be worried about fleas, and would give the dog old leftovers, nor could they afford the attention or supplies to fix the dog house . Also Trusty wasn’t suppose to survive, but after a test screening they added him back in at the end just w a broken leg. Enjoy the rewatch.:(

It's pretty clear what the two were doing between spaghetti and waking up at the park, but let's not go into Millennial fan-theory orgies, here: You don't have to be Tramp to know the reputation of junkyard/wrong-side-of-the-tracks dogs, or why they were chasing Lady. The teeth tend to be a bit of a giveaway.

@@TheKat12364 this isn’t taking place in the 50s it’s either the 1890s or 1910s, sort’ve that particular part of Americana as the nation was still relatively innocent before the First World War. That would really make single parenthood even more taboo.

I always took it to be that Jim, Dear and Darling are in their mid 20s, they’re not bad pet owners or parents, they’re just very naive, and life is still very new to them. In a sense, one can infer that Lady’s naïveté is a reflection of her silver-spoon owners.

I don't think I've seen this film in close to 20 years when I was a child, but so many memories and feelings came flooding back. Most notably when we were first introduced to Trusty I felt a sudden pang of lost childhood trauma and grief and I couldn't exactly say why lol. I guess what happens to him at the end really hit me as a child and it's just a completely suppressed memory. Crazy feeling.

I’m sure this movie contributed to my parents getting us a dog when i was a kid. :) parts of this definitely didn’t age super well (*cough siamese cats cough*) but i adored this dog-version of the rich girl / street-smart boy trope. It’s charming, i think is the word. I totally forgot they did the thing with Lady not knowing what a baby was, lol. As a kid i was like “trusty what the heck is birds and bees.”

Lol, yes! It confused me when Jock called a baby "a wee bairn." I always thought they should have told Lady that a baby was the human version of a puppy, to get a good solid comparison.

The fact that the house in this takes place at the turn of the century between 1899 to 1903 because of the gas powered house lamps on the walls and other details seeing the movie new in 1955 Walt Disney wanted to recount the era of his childhood even with the dog pound horse drawn wagon and early gas steam automobiles and steam locomotive 440 type by the water tower

I think you both might like Homeward Bound: the Incredible Journey. Definitely not animated, but a feast for animal lovers in general. Simple story, good cast, very well trained animals, humorous, sweeping score, and *gorgeous* camera shots.

After this film came out, in the late '50s - early '60s, Scamp (Tramp Jr.) had his own comic book. I collected several issues. And the Scamp movie, which came out much later, plays into the same need. After all, once Tramp settles down, his character isn't going to be that interesting any more, so you need a new generation to go on "adventures."

I love dogs. Watching both Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians made me want to own a dog and I’ve had several long after(Weimaraner’s to be exact). I like this movie for its character interactions and great animation. It’s always a charming film to sit down and watch from time to time.🙂🐾

The reason the neighbor dogs offered to “marry” Lady is because at that time having kids out of wedlock was very looked down upon. She ran away, spent the night with some scoundrel, and ended up in “jail”. If she was human the best chance for her honor was a family friend or older gentleman marrying her. Basically they weren’t trying to propose marriage because they were making moves on her, but to try and help to preserve her honor. Also from a dog standpoint it looks like she’d been kicked out and abandoned, so they offered their homes if she needed a place to go.

As a child, I took it more the latter way. That she was kicked out of the house, and was not being treated well anymore. So, they offered their homes so she could be loved and taken care of.

@Fighting Faerie I heard that explanation too. What I love about Disney movies is the ability for adults and children to watch and see meaning behind different things. This is a classic case of something a kid may not fully understand but an adult would, without saying it or throwing it in your face.

So as far as I'm aware this was both the first Disney movie to be filmed in Cinemascope widescreen (like Sleeping Beauty), as well as the first distributed by Buena Vista. As for how they got the movement of animals, animators reported having their studio chock full of dogs at all times, as well as caged rats on their desks.

I remember reading somewhere... That when the idea for this movie was first pitched. Walt Disney. HATED IT. He even considered scrapping it altogether until it was fortunately made the way we know and love today.

Lady is based on a dog that Disney legend Joe Grant had at the time, her name was Lady as well, although she wasn't a cocker spaniel but a springer spaniel. It was Walt who wanted Lady to be a cocker spaniel.

Honestly would love to see you guys react to Moses Prince of Egypt. It was the movie that saved dreamworks because its first movie was terrible. It's one of the only 2D movies dreamworks has done and everything from storyline and art to the soundtrack is amazing! And I love to see your reactions to it

My absolute favorite Disney film has always been Sword in the Stone. I’d love to see you react to it. Lady and the Tramp absolutely devastated little 7 year old me when it looked like Trusty died. It’s the first time I remember a movie making me cry.

I don't know if anyone else in the world has ever seen this Disney anthology but 'Melody Time' is a favorite of mine. It's just an anthology of short stories or even just song numbers. I highly recommend it!!!

Yeah, as others have said, I'm pretty sure they're offering to marry her because she's pregnant - and back then, being pregnant out of wedlock got women into serious trouble. It's meant to show that they're really good friends, because either would happily tie themselves to her for life, and raise pups that weren't theirs, just to keep her safe. I think that's also why they're SO mad at Tramp - because he literally got her pregnant and then "ditched" her.

“This lady is the most evil of all the Disney villains” lol! 🤣 This movie always gets me because I used to have an American cocker spaniel and currently have a Siamese cat. Both adorable, affectionate babies - I can never get enough of these animals. A vet once told me that when this movie came out, everyone wanted a spaniel. Not surprising! ❤️

This was my father's favorite animated film, and he'd quote it often. When we transitioned from VHS to DVDs, I bought him a DVD player for Christmas and to get him to use it, I had to get a bootleg DVD copy of Lady And The Tramp imported because Disney had vaulted it. Older movies that they had no plans to produce new home media copies for were "locked in the Disney Vault", usually for many years. Then they'd hype its limited release to generate demand for it. "Get your copy today before it gets locked away in the Disney Vault again!"

Dude, I'm so excited for this! I have a female dog called Lady who is the same breed as Lady in this movie. She's not named after Lady in this movie, she is just incredibly lady-like LOL. She looks and moves lady-like and strangers meeting her have described as 'very Disney' or 'a Disney dog'... so I can't wait to see this animation it'll be like watching a brown version of her (somehow not seen it before). 😂

I recommend The Aristocats next. 😊 Absolutely one of my favorite old time animations. If you enjoyed Lady and the Tramp I definitely think you'll love The Aristocats. It's such a vibe as well as being such an intriguing yet calm story like this movie. 🥰

Robin Hood is a really fun watch with great characters. I would also recommend The Sword in the Stone. If you want to venture into some live action Disney classics I suggest Bedknobs and Broomsticks! So fun and does have some animation :)

Among the voice cast Bill Thompson provided voices for a total of six characters including Jock the Scottish terrier, the bulldog and the policeman at the zoo. Although it may seem too similar on its face I think you'd definitely enjoy "101 Dalmatians".

This, Robin Hood, Aristocats, and 101 Dalmatians were on repeat pretty constantly for me when I was a kid, even had to get replacement tapes when I wore out the first ones. Theres just something about that era of Disney animals that just appealed to my brain. To this day I still want a dog like Lady, she's just the cutest little spaniel to ever exist.

Fun fact: the opening scene is based on something that actually happened to Walt and his wife during one of their Christmases.... And the many Disney movies are a metaphor for having to mature and grow in a short time... 🤔 The Disney conspiracy is so deep and I've studied it extensively.... Like scars back story is covered in one of Disneys books scars name was taka,he was mauled by a water buffalo and started to ask to be called scar instead, but scars jealousy and hatred for Mufasa is also explored more in depth too.. there's a theory that Tarzan is Elsa and Anna's brother and it was sort of confirmed by one of the writers saying Elsa and Anna's parents may not have died but might have washed up on shore somewhere... lady is about 6-8 months old at this point... About a year or so at the end. If you watch the second one you find out tramp is the lead junk yard dog 🐕 so he is tough

The book is darker than the movie, I read the book when I was little. My babysitter bought me the book to read when I was little. The dogs are reversed. Chief ends up killed by the train, and Copper ends up killed by his owner because the owner was going to a retirement home. It traumatized me as a kid and it still has scared me after reading it on this day

My favorite movie of all time. Have so many memories with it. I have a special connection with Lady and the Tramp. It was both my first Disney movie and movie I ever saw. I always go back to rewatching it every year multiple times. There is a sequel and it’s ok and decent. It has many problems but I can talk about that if you watch the sequel. But I will say that Lady means so much to me. My mother unfortunately passed away last year and it was really hard for me. But I always watch Lady and the Tramp to comfort and help with my struggles. Lady was like how my mom was to me. Especially when Lady became a mother. Thank you for watching this amazing masterpiece. As a Lady and the Tramp fan and animation fan in general, you earned a subscription from me. Have a good rest of your day.

I’d highly recommend you guys watch The Black Cauldron on Halloween night. That movie is both underrated and scary as heck. The villain himself is absolute pure nightmare fuel.

I love the Prydain Chronicles that The Black Cauldron is based on…. Princess Elonwy has always been one of my favorite princesses. She should be included in the entire Princess collection.

I believe this was actually the last of the truly traditionally animated Disney features from an animation standpoint. This movie was so expensive to make Disney tried to cut costs with a method called xerography which they first used in some parts of their next movie, Sleeping Beauty. But they didn't fully use xerography until 101 Dalmatians which was kind of an extreme test of xerography, I dare you to google exactly how many spots had to be drawn for that movie

You guys must watch The Black Cauldron. I personally always enjoy the more obscure animated movies, the underdog if you will, (no pun intended) because it always feels like you can find some really interesting animation techniques and experimentation. For Disney movies, I would have to say that film for me is the Black Cauldron from 1985. It was in production for years, went WAY over budget, during a heavy transitional period at disney as most of the 9 old men had either died or retired (what walt named his original team of animators). After the famous Don Bluth quit Disney and took over 15 new animators with him in an exodus of sorts around this time, the movie was in production hell. Disney's newly hired Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted the Black Cauldron to be edited and cut down as the film was considered waaay to dark and violent and was the first disney animated movie to have a PG rating at the time. It's safe to say the film has many experimental animation styles, and is great to look at, and it's a guilty pleasure of mine. It nearly bankrupted disney, until the Little mermaid turned things around and kick started the much loved Renaissance period. I would love to see you guys cover more obscure animated movies, such as Don Bluth movies, Ralph Bakshi movies, maybe films like Ferngully? Heavy Metal? Watership Down? Freddie as F.R.O.7? I could go on lol.

honestly one detail I've never noticed before even tho I grew up watching this movie religiously and only noticed now when you guys were talking about If it's okay for dogs to eat Spaghetti is that for the Spaghetti scene Tony actually didn't put any sauce 😳it was just the pasta and the meatballs so I guess that would make it pretty save for dogs.. for some reason I always remembered it to have sauce 🤨 (maybe because of the second Lady and the Tramp movie?) and fun fact in Germany the movie is actually called ''Susi & Strolch'' (Strolch roughly translating to Tramp) and therefor Lady is called Susi in the german version and the Tramp (likely referencing the Charlie Chaplin character/ movie) being named Strolch. I don't quite understand the change since in german Lady could've been translated with Dame and the Tramp could've stayed the Tramp since in german the title for the Chaplin Film also was ''der Tramp'' (just with the german article of course).. maybe they thought kids wouldn't find it as appealing or something? And could you two please please do Oliver and Company ? 🥺 this Disney movie is beyond underrated

Part of me always liked this movie, though I always felt kinda peeved about the Aunt's 2 cats- Si & Am, being huge pains right out of the gate, so to say. ( Plus, the characterization in how they talked being Asian cats.) Yes, I am a bit more so a Cat person (One of my cats is a Lynxpoint 1/2 Ragdoll, which has Siamese roots.) than a dog person. I get it's just an old classic movie. I saw it ages ago as a kid. Oh just FYI- the same Disney voice actress who did Lady, also was Meriweather the chubby Fairy in Sleeping Beauty.

some SUPER underrated non-disney animated films that I would love to see y'all react to are Watership Down (1978), The Plague Dogs (extended cut) (1982), and FLEE (2021). All great, unique, films that elevate and challenge what the medium of animation is capable of in regards to the stories that can be told. Plus, I would absolutely love to hear your perspectives on all three.

I heard they cut the "We are Siamese" song out of this movie but I'm glad you got to see the version with it. As a kid and cat-person (I do love dogs as well) that was my fav song from this movie. The way they animated the fur movement and long vs short hair with little fine detail was so beautiful. I hope you check out these other classic, UNIQUELY animated older movies, you won't be disappointed: The Last Unicorn and The Secret of Nimh (fun fact about that one - Bluth, fellow animators Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy and eight other animation staff left the feature animation department at Disney to set up their own independent studio, Don Bluth Productions)

People have loved pets for a very long time, but I feel like this movie (or rather, the book it was based on) really helped cement the idea in the (American) public. You have the dogs (and cats) with their own personalities and daily routines, you have their perspective on humans ("Jim Dear" and "Darling"), but I think most of all it's how the people interact with the animals. Jim and Darling letting Lady sleep on their bed and talking to her ("Oh, ladies first!"), Tony and Joe and their "favorite customer" that they give free spaghetti and entertainment for a special date (and of course "HE'S A-TALKING TO ME!"), Jock and Trusty are special guests for Christmas by Lady's family, and even Aunt Sarah - she's not a dog person but she clearly spoils her cats and at the end of the movie, Jim mentions that she got them dog biscuits for Christmas!

For other reactions, I would love love LOVE to see you guys do The Great Mouse Detective. It's a Sherlock Holmes-y adventure with mice, and it has some spectacular suspense, action, and animation (there's a clockwork sequence that I think is either 3D or plays with perspective in a great way similar to Atlantis and Treasure Planet!) As for princesses, I don't believe you've reacted to Tangled either and that's one of my favs. Love you guys, your videos always make my day

One Fun (ironic) fact about this movie I always loved... Tramp calls Lady "kid" and it is insinuated that he's older. In real life though, the voice actors (Barbara Luddy and Larry Roberts) were about 20 years apart with "Tramp" being the younger of the two.

I'm also surprised to find that more reactors don't do ''the fox and the hound' and 'balto' because seriously those two movies are just as good! It's a shame their not as iconic as this one, I hope you guys can watch them!
