Originally the plan was for Dr. Hill be able to hypnotize people. Explaining why the dean suddenly hated Dan and kicked him out of school. Hill wanted Megan for himself. It was also the reason he could control all the reanimated people at the end.

This one, teamed with its sequel, "Bride of Re-Animator", actually form a passable adaptation of the original serial short-story. They replaced a certain military commander with Dr. Hill, but otherwise it matches up pretty well. And Jeffrey Combs is a delight, as he always is in any role.

@@skeletalk No, it's not part of the RE-ANIMATOR franchise, it's its own thing, based on Lovecraft's all too short, in my opinion, story. Creature FX in it are simply stunning and Gordon brings back Jeffery Combs and Barbara Crampton to be leads, with Crampton's Dr. Katherine McMichaels character being the main lead. The color palette Gordon used always make me hungry for candy. Weird, I know. But watch and you'll see.

Hi Katie, I wanted to let know that all the anatomical drawings you liked from the credit sequence came from the medical textbook "Gray's Anatomy" - it's also where the TV show got it's name from. You can find it pretty cheap online, about $7 US. It's very thick and has hundreds of super-detailed anatomical drawings of the human body, it's organs, bones, circulatory system and everything really. It was written way back in the 1850s and served as the primary textbook for surgeons for well over 100 years.

There’s a movie from 1961 called The Brain That Wouldn’t Die which is pretty much based on the same story that THIS one is. That’s the first screen version of it. In fact, THIS movie here even steals features of THAT one which weren’t originated in the H.P.L. story (like the disembodied still-living head in a tray of blood).

There is an audio book where Jeffrey Combs (Herbert West) reads the the novel movie is based on, Herbert West - Re-Animator. They actually used the fluids from a glowstick as the serum. It's non toxic. I mean otherwise they wouldn't have done that If it was. There are two sequels, Bride of Re-Animator & Beyond Re-Animator, plus a 4th movie that was planned, but it sadly got cancelled. It was gonna be called House of Re-Animator, the plot would have taken place on the White House, William H. Macy was cast as the president & George Wendt as the vice president & not only would Jeffrey Combs have returned & Stuart Gordon returning to direct it, but Bruce Abbott would have returned as Dan Cain & even Barbara Crampton, but this time as the president's wife (my guess is that there would have been a sub plot about Dan starting a relationship with the first lady because she reminds him of Meg from the 1st movie. Which would have been ironic). There where other planned sequels after the 2nd movie, but they never got off the ground. One of the plots would have been about Herbert West meeting The Old Ones. Now you have to check out From Beyond, also based on a Lovecraft novel, also directed by Stuart Gordon & also stars Jeffrey Combs & Barbara Crampton. And it also has gore 😉 From Beyond is the perfect movie to have a double feature with Re-Animator 🙂

*_The main theme song, from the opening, may have felt very familiar because the director asked for it to be modelled from the classic theme from Psycho. In fact, if you listen to both closely together, you’ll notice that they almost identical in melody & instrument choices. Apparently, the European orchestra charged with playing it were so unused to such challenging rythmes that they had a very hard time delivering what the conductor was asking them to do; but they certainly delivered a masterpiece (I think it’s even better than Psycho’s theme)_* *_And Re-Animator is not the only horror movie to create thee own musical theme from copying parts of Psycho’s theme: Friday the 13th did the same thing (Not surprising since the first idea of the movie’s backstory was also inspired by Psycho). FT13th was much more subtle in their hommage to Psycho’s theme, but if you listen carefully, you’ll recognize the influence._*

The town of Arkham, Massachusetts on the Miskatonic River, its venerable institute of higher learning, Miskatonic University, and a few other nearby settlements (Dunwich, Innsmouth, Kingsport) are frequent settings for Lovecraft's stories. The Colour Out Of Space occurs on a remote farm outside of Arkham. All are fictional.

Mostly I just wanted to make sure you had seen the tv series Ash vs the Evil Dead, because I loved that series and was sad when it got cancelled. As for the Scooby, i never even heard of that, but I think those came out after I got to old to be interested in them. As I am old enough to have seen the original later seasons of the first cartoon when they first came out in the mid seventies.

Theres are deleted scenes from this that show more of Dr. Hill's "hypnotic" powers... his "domination of the will"... and also that Herbert West shoots up his reagent like heroin. Honestly though, it's better they were cut. They slow the movie to a crawl and dont add much to the enjoyment. The DVD commentary (originally from a LaserDisc commentary) is absolutley hilarious. Its of the whole main cast in one room and it seems like they all had a drink or two cause they're having a great time taking the piss out of each other, and the movie 😂". The director Stuart Gordon did an HP lovecraft follow up a year later... "From Beyond", with Jeff Combs and Barbara Crampton back, but their roles are flipped. Also Ken Foree from Dawn of the Dead '78. It's a lot of fun and really... gooey.😊

Katie, Thaaaank you so much for reacting to one of my favorite guilty pleasure horror films of all time 😍. It's Lovecraft-inspired. It's got gore and questionable taste. It's got great practical effects. What more could one want? Herbert West (played by Jeffrey Combs) is also a great anti-hero of tactless, douchey proportions. I love that bespectacled, miserable little man. He's probably ever-so-slightly before your time, but I compare him to musician/producer Steve Albini. Very similar physical appearance and personality. 😄

This one reminded me of a film that came out in 1992 by none other than Peter Jackson, the one who made the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Well in 1992 no one really knew about him and the film, Braindead, it really feels like someone messing around with practical effects and loosely tossed together a gross and raunchy humor plot sloppily thrown together and then calling it a movie. I guess there is a romance in it, kind of, and some of it might be taken as horror. Bizarre would be the one fitting word I would call it.

For a good treatment of a Lovecraft story, you should check out this same director's movie "Dagon" from years later - 2001 IIRC. It's about as close as a movie can get to the original, in this case The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Despite having a limited budget and a few bits with early CGI, it still has some good practical effects and appropriate creepiness.

The short story was inspired by Frankenstein and it's okay. Lovecraft wrote it because he needed the money at the time and I think it shows. But, the film is a really good comedy horror. From Beyond (1986) and Dolls (1987) are good follow up films by the same director. From Beyond is another Lovecraft adaptation starring Jeffrey Combs and Dolls is a bit like a horror fairy-tale about killer dolls. For non-horror recommendations; anything Jim Henson and Ray Harryhausen. I've been rewatching Farscape recently which has some really cool creature designs if you havn't seen it. You could also do more tier lists like a practical effects or artist tier list.
