The trailer and adds in 1981 hid that this was a Werewolf movie when this was first in theaters. It was sold as a slasher film, partly because that they were popular and also to keep the mystery a secret.

That's clever marketing I love that, because at the start when I was watching I was like... Doubting it was a werewolf film for some reason? And I'd have to explain later why I thought that? 🤣

Great reaction Skele. This is such a classic. I was lucky enough to meet Dee Wallace at a local con a couple years ago. She was so down to earth. I loved hearing her speak about her experiences with this movie as well as many of her other films.

Rick Baker had a student and friend working with him under his apprentice named Rob Bottin. Rick told Rob that he had to work on two movies they both came with new ideas for the transformation effects. Rick was called off to AAWIL and said to Rob that he could do everything on The Howling and said this is your shot kid good luck. As you can see Rob was more than capable of even matching his mentors skills.

I think hydraulics or pneumatics were used for the pulsating flesh during the scenes where they metamorphosize. One thing that I particularly like about THIS flick is how that one werewolf was a sadistic serial killer. THAT's something original that hadn't been done before. In all other werewolf movies, including American Werewolf in London, the guy who changed into the monster was always reluctant and guilt-stricken, and HERE we had one that was an evil person who actually enjoyed it. Instead of being a SPLIT-personality kind of thing it was an EXTENSION of his true personality.

I saw this movie when I was 9 years old and it caused a HUGE argument between my parents and my big sister! My sister was 17 and when her boyfriend was going to take her to the drive-in, I was sent along to cockblock. I came home and had loved the movie and started describing the werewolf sex scenes and my parents lost it... They're yelling at my sister... my sister points out that THEY were the ones who sent me to see the movie!!! She didn't want to bring me but my parents had insisted on it... which just escalated things. Nothing worse than a bunch of yelling and my parents saying "DON'T TALK BACK TO ME!".. but it got pretty heated! I don't know which show I enjoyed better that night! 🤣🤣🤣

These pulsation effects were accomplished using air bladders. And they actually weren't first invented in the 80's (though that's when they really became "the rage"). They were invented at Universal studios during the 1950's. Films of THAT decade and studio like notably Creature from the Black Lagoon and This Island Earth had featured them (though not quite to the same extreme).

My favorite of the werewolf craze of the 80's. I'm not sure you recognized him after., but the werewolf that pulled the bullet out of his head was Robert Picardo. Like Dick Miller he was also in Gremlins 2. He was Clamp's eight hand man that was seduced by the female gremlin. The third werewolf film around that time was Wolfen. Another fun Joe Dante film from the 80's is Innerspace.

The transformation scenes in both this and American Werewolf in London are linked... both films came out in 81, both used tech invented by Rick Baker... John Landis had been trying to make American Werewolf for a decade and got his friend Baker to invent this way of showing an in camera transformation... over a few years.. but by the time Landis got to make A.W.I.L., Baker got hired by Joe Dante to do... another werewolf movie.. stealing his makeup guy who'd promised him he'd get to debut that makeup for A.W.I.L. Landis chewed out Baker over the phone, called him a "motherfucker"... and Baker decided hed go do American Werewolf and leave the makeup in The Howling to Rob Bottin... who went on to be the makeup FX genius on movies like The Thing and Robocop. Dante did Gremlins after this... and you can see the same Smiley Face stickers used in this movie on Billy's fridge in Gremlins. Also, Dick Miller (Mr. Futterman in Gremlins) is in all of Dantes movies...here hes the occult book store guy. Miller and Dante go back to their days working for Roger Corman, king of the B movies. Therrs a great documentary about Dick Miller.. called "That Guy... Dick Miller"... cause hes one of those "hey, it's that guy"s in movies. The chief difference between Howling and American Werewolfs transformation is the lighting. Dante's is in shadow, while Landis' is in a fully lit room... which was kind of an intentional flex. No way to hide anything.

The remake of The Wolfman also has Rick Baker doing the effects. So there's a lot of gnarly transformations like An American Werewolf In London, but AAWIL focuses much more on the supernatural. The Wolfman remake focuses much more on the animal savagery (the werewolf in this one is definitely not misunderstood, it's very much a force of nature to be reckoned with). The remake also focuses on how man treats other man in an almost beastly way. The remake piqued my interest since it also stars Anthony Hopkins, who is one of my all time favorite actors. I personally was disappointed how it had a few too many unnecessary cheap jump scares, but it's not bad as a remake goes. Del Toro was a fan of the original source material, as well.
@skeletalk

@@skeletalk I think you've got the wrong Del Toro, Katie. It's Benicio Del Toro, not Guillermo Del Toro. Benicio Del Toro stars in it but he also helped produce the remake of The Wolfman, as he was a fan of the original source material.

This is a great one. A decent werewolf movie with a bit of mystery to it and great 80's effects. Which also makes it a bit hard to talk about since the werewolves are supposed to be a twist. Kinda like Stephen King's Salem's Lot. Also fun fact: Karen's coworker and fellow reporter, Lew Landers, makes a cameo on the TV at the very end of Gremlins reporting on the movie's events. His appearance means both Gremlins movies take place in the same universe as The Howling. Apparently, gremlins and werewolves exist together.

Werewolves being nocturnal creatures primarily have heightened night vision and bright lights overload their receptors so it hurts them I guess, like humans squinting in the dark and getting a torch shone in their eyes. I believe the older and more powerful a werewolf is the more able they are to transform at will instead of being purely governed by the lunar cycles, even able to transform during the day.

There is actually quite a bit of history of lycanthropy in history. The term lycanthrope is Greek for "man wolf" and while not directly, has been linked as far back as the time of Herodotus. That wasn't official term for it and it was viewed as a curse from the gods (King Lycaon, Damarchus), but there were man-animal hybrids, the most obvious being the Minotaur. The French have a WEALTH of werewolf lore, as well as the Asian Hengeyokai. Yes, there are different forms of lycanthropy from the more common infection, to curses (either from a witch/shaman, or the gods/spirits), to witchcraft (the French loup-garou was imagined to have to meld with the skins of wolves to transform). Most of the exterior scenes are in Mendocino, California. The ocean scenes are the Russian Gulch State Park in Mendocino. The forest scenes had many locations around Mendocino, largely.

So glad you saw this one! It doesn't get as much attention as "An American Werewolf in London" but is an absolute gem. The makeup FX were done by the great Rob Bottin, who did all the brilliant makeup work in "The Thing" as well. You had wondered about how the "skin" was moved. They used air bladders under the appliances that they would inflate and deflate to get the movement, a technique pioneered by the brilliant Dick Smith, in "Altered States." The lead, Dee Wallace, also played Elliot's mom in "E.T." and was in the movie "Cujo." Another great werewolf film that you should see is "Ginger Snaps." I think you would really enjoy it.

If you want to see a good science fiction movie, I would recommend reacting to the 1984 science fiction adventure classic The Last Starfighter, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, and Catherine Mary Stewart, if that's OKay? It's a space opera movie about a teenager who gets a really high score in an arcade video game, gets recruited by an alien defense force to fight in an interstellar war, and has to play the game for real. I think it's an underrated gem of the 80s, although I think more people appreciate it for what it is now. It's also really cool because it's one of the first movies to use computer generated imagery in it. It uses CGI for some pretty great space flight and space combat scenes. It's a fun watch, and it'd make for a great reaction.

Hi Katie enjoyed your reaction to this enjoyable werewolf film but for me I prefer American Werewolf in London, anyway Rick Baker who did the effects on American Werewolf was the original guy on this film but left to come to England to work on the aforementioned film, but the guy that took over was Rob Bottin and he had worked for Rick Baker for many years by this point, so everything he knew about practical effects he learned from Rick, but he didn't copy him he put hes own spin on the effects and created his own style, anyway this film is based on a book if you ever feel like reading it. Rob Bottin has worked on a lot of amazing films over the years, but the ones which you might enjoy the most are Piranha 1978 directed by Joe Dante, The Fog 1980 directed by John Carpenter, Legend 1985 is a dark fantasy staring Tim Curry and a young Tom Cruise directed by Ridley Scott, RoboCop 1987 directed by Paul Verhoeven, and Total Recall 1990 directed by Paul Verhoeven.

It's about a human and an alien who crash land on a hostile planet and have to put aside their hatred for each other in order to survive. It's a really touching story and a great anti-war anti-hatred movie 🙂

Be sure to stick around for Howling 3 Marsupials. Not just bad, but really really stupid.

I think THAT one was where they started spoofing it because it came several years later and the shock and amazement that THIS one had was starting to wear off.

The effects were not actually effects, as back in the eighties werewolves actually existed and used in the movie.

The problem with the Howling 2 is how muche the studio f'ed it up and its not edited very well. I still enjoy watching it mainly because Christopher Lee is in it.

A cheap budget film more artsy than artistic but one that can still get you in the feels if you can handle its quarkiness is the 2009 movie, Lo, by Travis Betz. Very niche but I would be curious on your thoughts. Lots of practical effects, some cheesy, because that is all they had to work with.
