Simmons trying to convince himself that the Bucks getting Lillard is a lateral move is why I watch him lol
@Davivd2
@Davivd2 9 ай бұрын
I think that it's a lateral move. It's a defensive loss for sure. Damian isn't going to put up 32 per game with Giannis and Middleton to share the ball with. I see him putting up 22 to 25. Jrue Holiday shot one percent better from 3 last year. Let's just call that lateral and the Bucks lost Grayson who was their best 3 point shooting floor spacer. Now the Bucks best wing 3 point shooter at the wing is Malik Beasly and he's shaky. IMO, if it's not a lateral move it's a slight offensive increase and a bigger defensive loss.

@@Davivd2having a guy who can score from 40 ft to join the guy who can dominate the paint is way more than a slight offensive increase. Star players have crazy impact on the floor. On top of that, as good of a defender as Jrue is, Giannis and Brook are still the main pieces of their defense and you’ll have an elite defense as long as you have those 2.
@thomasredden4263

@@Davivd2brother what are you talking about? First of all, the pick and pop/roll game with Giannis and Dame will be like nothing the league has seen up to this point, especially with a big like Lopez who can still knock down from 3 and run the PnR as well with dame, Middleton was already declining and will likely be a 16 ppg scorer this year as he steps back into a tertiary scoring roll instead of a secondary one which will allow him to put more energy on the defensive end, and they do an amazing job of masking one another’s faults. Dame is an amazing ball handler and has been one of the best behind the arc scorers off the dribble or the catch for a decade, while being able to drive and be incredibly effective off the bounce, which will open the lane for Giannis in a way no other player on the market could have, Grayson is only decent at 3’s and is very streaky, and can only shoot off the catch. He’s got no bag to create his shot. They won’t be as good on the defensive end, but they will still be top 5 between Lopez, Middleton and Giannis, who will all be able to focus more on that end as they will have the load significantly lightened on offense. Dame has been great the last couple years when they have been in the playoff hunt, and has rested a lot when they have fallen out of it so he’s got a lot of tread left on the tires and will be a 28-32 ppg scorer this year while actually having options to get the ball to, which he’s an incredibly underrated passer. He’s finally got a shot at a chip and will be playing like his legacy is on the line, bc in some ways it is. He will be more fired up than we have seen in years. They didn’t lose there depth and got off a big contract in Jrue that was rapidly declining as his quickness wanes.( love Holiday and he will always be a hero in Milwaukee being the piece that put them over the hump) and him and Grayson being out covers Dames salary. And just for the record, 3pt ability is much more than just percentages. It’s that mixed with shot difficulty, ability to create your shot, ability to shoot both of the catch and the dribble, and the volume. Dame can pull up from 40 and shoot off the catch, the dribble and use the gravity of his shot to get teammates open and make good quick passes to capitalize and do so while shooting at 40%+ at a super high volume. This is so far from a lateral move

But last I checked Middleton, Connaughton, Crowder and Portis aren't exactly Wiggins, GPII, Porter and Looney on defense. And I know I left out Brook but I'm just not sure how tenable he is given his lack of foot speed on the perimeter and the fact you can't play a ton of drop against Boston. Especially without good point-of-attack defense. He also shooting 17.5% on threes against Boston in the playoffs so there's that

I mean it's probable that the current front office won't even be there at that point but still.... A lot of people love the Celtics would never cash in on the New Jersey pic swaps and I'm pretty sure one of them ended up becoming a number 1 overall. Milwaukee just added a more explosive scoring and shooting point guard but they lost arguably the best two-way point guard in Holiday. My gut feeling says that they are at the very least as good as they were when they won their championship in 2021 and possibly a bit better overall, but it does concern me if they’re going to be a team that is able to get stops when it matters most in the conference finals and possibly NBA finals if they get there. Also I like the trade because now I believe Dame is in his ideal role, as an outstanding #2 to Giannis with the proven ability to take over and close games when needed to. But they have about one or two year window to get this thing done with Dame and Middleton already in their 30s.

I am a Raptors supporter and objectively the Celts have landed on top as scoring Holiday now gives them a better team from top to bottom then the Bucks especially since two of the three players they gave up had no future with them . The only one they may miss later is Williams. The Celts are better situated to withstand an injury to a key player than the Bucks or most other teams. At the end of the day , we all know that it is a rarity that any team gets through the season without losing a key player to an injury or having an injury that effectively makes him a non- playoff factor ( unless the player is Harden where injury is not a factor to him being a playoff failure) . So for all the discussion about the Celts and Bucks , there is no reason to believe that it could not be Indiana , the Knicks ..... that wins the East ( Note- being a realist I will not suggest it would be the Raptors)

This is a defensive downgrade for Milwaukee for an offensive upside. If it works out, they’ll outscore teams in route to a finals run. If it doesn’t, they’ll get exposed by a team like Miami did last year and lose earlier than everyone expects.

I'll explain ... Milwaukee was tougher than Boston. Miami was/is tougher than Boston. I'm not a Celtcis fan, but if you listen to them, they know they are soft and are legitimately scared of teams that can bully them. Milwaukee won't do that anymore so that's one. Now saying "favorable" ... yeah, that's dumb. But White is an ideal defender against Dame and Boston held GS to a 111 off rating in the finals. They will defend Milwaukee just fine because of White's screen navigation and their collective length. What you want with Dame is what GS has with Steph -- a bunch of long rangy wings and mobile big. That's what Miami is. You can try to attack him but they'll just switch everything and have 4 good perimeter defenders on the court and the speed to close on the rim. That's why they are scarier and that's just not what Milwaukee has. Giannis is that, but the rest of the roster isn't. Brook is slow. Khris is slow. Jae is slow. (He also likes to switch so you bring up Brook and now it's Jaylen/Derrick/Jayson against Brook in space.) Dame is small. Pat -- I like Pat but if he's your defensive stopper that's a problem. So what will happen is Boston will play five out and matchup hunt. (They already do.) So now you have Tatum, Brown, Brogdon (maybe) and White just going one-on-one with Pat, Khris, Dame, Jae. Guys who just don't have the footspeed to keep up with them. And because Boston plays five shooters, you can't really help. Especially since Tatum keeps getting better at the hitting guys as their defender is leaning the wrong way. I mean you probably have to put Giannis on Tatum but he's not a good screen navigator either cause he's so big. If Brook/Portis come out, Tatum is at the rim. If they don't, he's burying threes like he did to Joel. I genuinely think this is like when a team switches from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and but you don't have a dominant nose tackle so the whole thing just falls apart. Point-of-attack defense like Jrue provided in a drop scheme is the equivalent. It's what ties the whole thing together. If Milwaukee can retool on the fly -- Bridges/Claxton for Khris/Brook would be the pipe dream -- I think they are the clear favorites, but honestly the defense is going to be a real problem in the playoffs because they were built for a completely different scheme.

It's all going to depend on how this new coach uses Giannis to be honest... Dame is great because you have an additional closer on top of what Middleton can do when he's healthy. Adding Dame who can get to the rim at will and shoot at a high percentage takes off the ability to build a wall against Giannis now since he doesn't have to drive to the basket from the 3 point line now as much (which every team has tried to do in the playoffs). Let's all remember the Bucks went up 3-2 on the Celtics in 2022 without their #2 in Middleton..... Trading for Holiday means Brogdon plus one of Horford or Timelord & picks. 1,that kills Boston's depth and 2, why would Portland want that package? They don't need more guards and they just traded for a starting center. Then Barrett talks about Dame's playoff history being not what everyone expects outside of the big buzzer beaters, go look at Jrue's stats in the playoffs too. His FG/3pt percentages are pretty awful in recent years. He's a very good all around player but if we're talking offense he's not even close to Dame's level.

So what's Jimmy gonna do when it's Damian Lillard guarding him instead? Drop 90? Great offense beats great defense but if your defense turns the other teams offense into an even better one that doesn't matter. Boston held GS to a 111 offensive rating. As great as Milwaukee will be on offense, they aren't scoring 125 per 100 on Boston. It's less about the great offense, middling defense thing than the specific roster construction. Milwaukee is basically the 2021 to 2023 Jazz on defense. Teams are gonna go five out -- Boston already does -- and just attack the weaker perimeter defenders one on one. Giannis is great but he can't actually guard all five guys at once. And Brook is a great drop big but if you can't pressure the ball and get over the screen all drop does is give up open shots. You have to actually force the ball downhill into Brook for him to be effective. Otherwise he's just watching practice shots like everyone else.

There's a reason LA didn't play him even though they really needed his shooting. Pat is fine as your fifth guy or seventh guy. I like Pat. But it's like Phoenix last year trying to use Torrey Craig as their stopper. That ain't it Good or bad Dame is 6'3". Steph is genuinely a good defensive player, much better than Dame, but he's small so he gets picked on. That's just what happens. You can't stick your head in the sand and pretend it's 2010 and you can just put him on Andre Roberson and no one will bother him. Good teams are going to attack him
