I remember it well in 1979. There was an aspect about them that they were ordinary folk who tried their hand at music and accidently found they were super. Ian Dury was inspirational and a man with great ability. RIP.

There’s a lot of music hall, poetry, funk, British humour with a large slap of punk. We will never see the like of these artists again.

I remember this on Top of the Pops for the first time 😁 in 1979 when it was first released. I was 15 . It came off the back of the punk era and in theUK we were used to seeing crazy, mad stuff happening…. But even so, this track stood out as brilliant and we all loved it at school. We used to sing it in our breaks/recess and danced to it at our youth club discos too because if the funky back beat. Brilliant 🤩.

He was a wonderful poet, and he was all for love, peace and compassion. I got a dirty look from the Woolworths manager when I bought the album Sex and Drugs and RocknRoll. He clearly was prejudiced by the title.

Hi Tony ... "New Boots" was issue on Stiff in the USA when if first came out. "Do It Yourself" and "Laughter" were on Stiff/Columbia in the USA. I think I might have been one of the few that bought Ian's records, then I bought the UK import singles, 12" and LP's. Had to have the original Stiff versions. Take care and keep rockin' ... 😎🎸✌

There is a really odd cover of this song in Swedish by the Finnish artist M A Numinen which really kills the punk feeling: "Slå mig med din rytmenpinne". It was a hit in Sweden. Numinen's odd voice + Pedro Hietanen on accordion sounds just stupid (and the title is sort of fake Swedish). Also there is a live version on KZfaq with large jazz orchestra added. It gives a third dimension to the song! Check both of them out!
