Reaction To Bob & Doug McKenzie Songs (Twelve Days Of Christmas and Take Off ft Geddy Lee) SCTV
This is my reaction to Bob & Doug McKenzie Songs (Twelve Days Of Christmas and Take Off ft Geddy Lee) SCTV
In this video I react to two songs from SCTV's Canadian comedy duo Bob & Doug McKenzie played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. SCTV was a popular Canadian comedy show in the 70's and 80's featuring the aforementioned actors as well as comedy greats like John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short. These two songs were awesome. One was a parody of Twelve Days Of Christmas and the other called Take Off featured Rush frontman Geddy Lee.

I grew up in Edmonton in the '70s and '80s. There was a special time in the early '80s when EVERY boy in my junior high gleefully reenacted Bob and Doug episodes on Monday mornings that we'd watched on Friday night. And then SCTV got Americanized, and something pure, funny and Canadian got spoiled.

Hollywood rides on our backs like a parasite and spoils everything it touches. Real Americans loved the true Canadian culture, our neighbors to the North. SCTV was the funniest thing I ever saw, especially the fake commercials.

Rush is an amazing band, both lyrically and musically. Their drummer, Neil Peart, unfortunately passed away due to illness a few years ago. He was called The Professor because he wrote most of Rush’s lyrics. There is a KZfaq video of a drum solo. He did in Frankfurt Germany. That will blow your mind. Rush has some great songs, my favourite is Tom Sawyer. But there are a host of others that are mentioned below. Fantastic band.

@YT_MertCan - Rush was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame and deservedly so. Neil Peart was considered one of it not THE best rock drummer of all time and he was usually their lyricist. Losing his wife and daughter tragically he took a year long motorcycle journey and wrote a book about how to deal with grief. A brilliant man. Geddy (Gary) Lee is an absolutely amazing bassist. When he played guitar or keyboards he would play bass with his feet using a synthesizer. Alex Lifeson was an amazing guitarist. Three men produced the sound of a dozen. They had a worldwide following. When inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame Alex's speech consisted of @ 2 minutes of "blah, blah, blah" mocking the banality of acceptance speeches. They were all comical guys. On stage they would have tons of silly props like washing machines and rubber chickens. I'm not a fan of heavy stuff but their virtuosity was magnetic.

Both songs got good air play when released, and both are my playlists. As for Geddy Lee and Rush, they were a Canadian powerhouse group with a library of music that I think you will enjoy exploring. Songs that come to mind for you to start with are, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions. Something else you might enjoy from the era of Great White North, and you should watch the documentary of it's production as well as listen to the song is Tears are not Enough by Northern Lights. Which was the Canadian record industry at the time coming together to raise funds for famine relief.

Geddy Lee was the bassist, kayboardist and lead singer of Ruch - a Canadian ProgRock group that was out at the same time as "Yes" in the '70s and '80s. They used to sneak into "Yes" concerts they were too young to get into. But - in a weird twist of fate - it was Geddy Lee who inducted "Yes" into the R&R Hall of Fame - and took the late Chris Squires' place on stage when they played "Roundabout" at the Awards night. How cool is that ?!?

there are 2 episodes of SCTV that are full-length Bob & Doug episodes...one is called "The Great White North Palace" where Guy Cabellero, the manager of the SCTV station tries to capitalize on the McKenzie's popularity by giving them a prime time special & they get Tony Bennett to guest star...you can imagine what happens when things go downhill, since Bob & Doug can barely put together a 2-minute show and now have to pull off a full special...the second full Bob & Doug episode is one where they are struggling to find a good topic for their show & wind up getting an interview with Canadian musician Ian Thomas (Dave's younger brother) Both are great episodes because it expands the characters beyond their 2-minute segments & you get to see them interact with other characters in the SCTV Universe...definitely worth watching!!!

It always impressed me that they invited Geddy Lee (who, in addition to vocals is a brilliant bass guitarist) when they could have easily included Ian Thomas (Dave Thomas' brother). Ian is a legitimate rock star but rather than nepotism they went for name recognition. I am sure Ian would have done a great job but Geddy Lee is the man. (and ten bucks is ten bucks!)

What's French Canadian have to do with it? The province is in canada, still Canadian... eventhough Quebec wanted to be it's own country at 1 time, the balls of the Quebec government.

Rush is one of the best ever prog rock bands and with only 3 members they are deemed to have the most talented musicians in one band. Each one is at or near the top of their perspective playing of their instruments. They inspired some of the best bands to have come after them. Their earlier music (pre-1980) is epic. Their later music is popular and catchy. They are also just really nice people. Epic songs: 2112, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage Popular songs: Closer to the Heart, The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight and many more.

Everyone is going to mention "Tom Sawyer" by Rush, it's a great song and a song to introduce into Rush's music. Their masterpiece in my opinion was the album 2112. I always try to mention this song when Rush is mentioned even though it's actually a Max Webster song but all three members of Rush play on it called "Battlescar". I was too young to have seen it but they actually played my High School before they released their first album when John Rutzey was still their drummer. Neill Peart who replaced Rutzey completely changed the sound of Rush, they were more of a rock/blues band (a great song off of their first album is "Working Man") that transformed into a prog rock band and Peart was one of the most highly regarded drummers in the world. I actually got the Great White North album for a Christmas gift when it was popular, I used to love watching SCTV back in the day and it still makes me laugh. At the beginning of each episode they would show a shot of someone throwing a tv out the window from an apartment building.

Bob and Doug McKenzie were introduced as characters to mock the Canadian content laws of the country. It's really important that you watch entire episodes of SCTV to fully grasp what is going on in each of these little skits. I can't overstate how important that is. Bob and Doug were introduced because the government of the day complain that the show resemble too closely common shows out of USA, and they needed to be substantially Canadian content in each episode. So, the SCTV creators came up with Bob and Doug, quintessentially Canadian boys just to mock the requirements. They had no idea they would become such iconic characters, arguably the most famous and popular characters in Canadian TV history.
