Fact: When Bismarck shot his first volley the shockwave was so powerful it broke the radar system

When the torpedo struck bismarcks rudder making it circle, the ship was just a few hours away of making it to air protection from the luftwaffe, a lucky hit but what an important one.

Bismarck was a monster over 40% of its total displacement was pure armour, no other ship in history had that percentage .

"Resist and Bite" is a good one. About how a small group of soldiers were told to hold a border against the invading Germans, then forgotten about/weren't able to be given a command to retreat.

Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched in February 1939. Work was completed in August 1940, when she was commissioned into the German fleet. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power. In the course of the warship's eight-month career under her sole commanding officer, Captain Ernst Lindemann, Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, lasting 8 days in May 1941, codenamed Rheinübung. The ship, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was to break into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. At the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the battlecruiser HMS Hood initially engaged Prinz Eugen, probably by mistake, while HMS Prince of Wales engaged Bismarck. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, which then damaged Prince of Wales and forced her retreat. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits to force an end to the raiding mission. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, heading for occupied France to effect repairs, Bismarck was attacked by 16 Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship's steering gear inoperable. In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was engaged by two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, and sustained incapacitating damage and heavy loss of life. The ship was scuttled to prevent her being boarded by the British, and to allow the ship to be abandoned so as to limit further casualties. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June 1989 by Robert Ballard, and has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions. A detailed underwater survey of the wreck in 2002 showed that the sustained close-range shelling was largely ineffective in the effort to sink the ship, the many torpedoes launched at Bismarck were also almost completely ineffective, and the massive plating of the armour deck was also found to be virtually intact.

News on the radio in the intro: " .... who blew up the mighty battle cruiser Hood". That was one of the biggest turning points of WW2, the biggest in the battle for the Atlantic and the hunt for Bismarck. Hero ships of those times like Ark Royal, KGV, Suffolk, PoW, Victorious, Renown, Repulse, Rodney, Sheffield, Dorsetshire, Norfolk, basically an entire armada going after Bismarck, should always be remembered.

Good to see you diving into Sabaton, they're one of my favorite bands. I'm not even gonna bother throwing in any recommendations because (in my opinion) you can't really go wrong no matter what song you pick from them.

The first half of this song definitely seems to be about how terrifying the Bismarck is. For me, the second half is more about the plight that her crew faced in being relentlessly hunted down by the Allies. After they sustained damage, they were essentially abandoned by the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe and left to die. Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this song was performed in the waters near where Bismarck's wreckage lays.

The last survivor of the Bismarck died 1 year before this video released. The compass and the office memorabilia was his. The fishing boat skipper is his son.

Thanks for the video! ••• Bismarck's location had been blown, and the allies were coming to take it out. It was trying to reach waters where German air cover could defend, but lost its rudder to a torpedo and was stuck going in a circle. Some say it sank, but most now think that the captain scuttled it to rob the Allies of a prize.

I'd also recommend Sabaton - No Bullets Fly (Animated Story Video). That video is what makes men cry. It's about an event that took place during WW2, when German pilot Franz Stigler was ordered to take down an American B-17 bomber. This B-17 was already thrashed up and held a few soldiers including its pilot, 2nd Lt. Charles "Charlie" Brown. When Franz saw how bad the plane was, and how the men weren't even firing off, he instead decided to escort them out of the killing zone. This was an ultimate act of mercy and compassion during the bloodiest war in history, and Franz risked his life doing this, as he had to go over enemy lines to escort them, and he risked being court marshalled for his defiance.

Next song from Sabaton you should listen to is definitely "Price of a Mile". It about the slaughterhouse of the battle of Passchendale, where the Entente Powers advanced 6 miles for the cost of half a million dead. Then "Fields of Verdun" about the legendary defence of Verdun, a 303 day and night long slugfest and longest continuous battle in history and Frances finest fight.

Going to a concert with Sabaton, the HU, and Lordi in March 2022, and I just know I won’t have a voice for an entire week after!!! If you ever get the chance to see Sabaton live, DO IT!

I know that many others are recommending other songs, but my two favorite are "The attack of the deadmen" and "Devil Dogs" the lyric video has some info about the events of the first and the second on is about how the Marine Corps earned the title of Hell Hound from the German at the Battle of Belleau Wood.

Sabaton songs you absolutely MUST react to: White Death, about Simo Hayha, the DEADLIEST sniper in the history of gun based warfare, and my family's anthem, which we believe should be the Polish national anthem, Uprising, about the Warsaw Uprising in WWII.

Personally I think Sabaton- Uprising (Live at Woodstock, Poland) is their best, and not just because of the crowd. The song is totally awesome, the crowd and the fact they did it in the country that the history of the song occurred in is just a huge bonus.

I would recommend No Bullets Fly next. It's about care and compassion across the lines of war. The Red Baron is a strong favorite but honestly I would follow it with The Night Witches. Which is about Young Russian Women becoming pilots and overcoming the shortcomings that they where stuck with and how they overcame them.

I have seen these videos countless times and Sabaton is my go to music. I watch you because you have so much joy watching Sabaton. The sinking of the Bismarck was in retaliation to the sinking of the Hood. Only 3 men survived and one was interviewed. When the Hood sank, the boiler blew up, breaking her keel and lifting the only surviving crew to the surface. The Bismarck was “The Terror of the Seas” Thanks Dave. Your analysis is on point and opens new ideas of their depth.

Great reaction! I like that they've inspired you to do more research on the story of the fate of the Bismark. There's too much to tell in one small post, but basically it was the story of one massive ship with the power to sink a whole convoy by itself, which would have essentially starved Britain into submission and ended the war for the UK. So Churchill put a premium on destroying this monster ASAP. It was chased by the Royal Navy into the Atlantic, where the Bismark managed to sink a British battleship the Hood, a massive loss for the UK. Eventually this massive monster was brought to heel by several "stringbags", semi-obsolete biplanes carrying torpedoes. One hit the Bismark's rudder and essentially disabled it such that it ran in circles, and it was only a matter of time before it would be sunk by the Brits.

A personal favorite of mine is "82nd All the Way." It's a song about the most decorated soldier of WWI.

Tommy is one of the best at making his guitar solos tell a story on their own!

Another great song is The Lost Battalion, about the 77th Division in WWI who were pinned down by enemies and somehow made it out with heavy losses but alive none the less. The band altered the sounds of the instruments slightly to make them sound like gun fire and bayonet stabs. Definitely worth a listen.

There actually is original footage somewhere on youtube shot from the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen that was escorting Bismarck during the Battle of the Denmark Strait. You can see how terrifying these ships really were when you can see the main battery firing at HMS Hood. Keep in mind though, that the big plume of smoke in the distance in the end of that footage is actually the british battle cruiser exploding and taking all but 3 of her crew down with her...

The KZfaq channel, Sabaton History, is AMAZING for how informative it is! They cover EVERYTHING over there! The videos might be a little bit long but they are AWESOME! Not sure if you would want to actually do reactions to them but it is totally worth your time to watch! :)

One issue the Bismarck had encountered in it's last battle were the Fairey Swordfish biplanes (the planes that you saw dropping their torpedoes). The Swordfish had the rather ironic advantage of being an outdated design and the Bismarck's anti-aircraft guns weren't calibrated for their slow speed. The AA rounds would either explode too early or too late and the shrapnel wouldn't be able to do any damage to the planes

"We're going down a Sabaton road..." and I'm here for it. Sabaton is easily one of my favorite bands. I would recommend "Primo Victoria" for the quintessential Sabaton sound or "No Bullets Fly" (Yarn Hub animated video) for a story about two pilots in WWII.

Carolus Rex is another good one. So is Coat of Arms, Primo Victoria, 40:1, Resist and Bite and Light in the Black.

ok this song is AMAZING but it doesn't do the Bismark justice cause it is even more impressive than what this song gives you. This is a ship that stealthed its way past radar using whales as cover past the British to secure the french coast and would have utterly destroyed the British hold on the Atlantic if it succeeded in getting there. This ship scared the shit out of the British navy so bad they deployed every ship in the Atlantic to converge on it and attack and it didn't even phase it while it fought off all contenders till one lucky torpedo damaged its rudder making it do donuts only 12 hours from its destination and it took them 2 hours of constant torpedo fire to sink a ship doing donuts

Some background about the Bismarck: It was heavily damaged before it sank, and was being pursued for 3 days (if I remember correctly) prior to it taking its last stand.

Regarding a movie about the ship...it's an old one, but a good one. Even as a kid in the 90s, the black & white 'Sink the Bismarck!' was really good and kept my attention. The ship was infamous for sinking HMS Hood, the pride of the UK's Royal Navy at the time. Debate continues to this day as to how easily the Bismarck blew it up, but one opinion I subscribe to is that a shell found its way below the waterline, and somehow hit in a manner that had an extremely low chance of happening, of which the ensuing explosion found the powder magazine that enflamed the entire ship from the inside.

Sabaton definitely has a way of making you feel epic emotions Defense of Moscow and Shiroyama are two of my favorites (other than Bismarck)

so the bismark after getting surrounded. got shelled by a few dozen ships and a few dozen planes were launching torpedoes, at the end the entire deck was aflame. a torpedo ship of the british navy was able to get close enough to launch ship based torpedoes. at the end the kriegsmarine decided to scuttle their ship to stop it from getting into allied hands. also bismark was the only ship that was a "He". if you were paying attention you would see the pendant he was looking at in the beginning and the end. iirc that was actually the grandson or son of the one that was rescued. some of this ive been picking up from other comments in the videos.

The Bismarck was a German battleship in World War II, one of two (the other being the Tirpitz) that were the biggest ever constructed outside of the Yamato class from Japan. Upon setting sail , it was tracked by the British because they definitely didn’t want this particular ship, getting into the Atlantic, where I could devastate convoys. The HMS hood, and the HMS, Prince of Wales intercepted them engaged them in battle. During the battle. The Prince of Wales was damaged, and one of Bismarcks, heavy shells, impacted the Hoods forward, magazine, resulting in a explosion, which sunk the hood with all hands. Afterwards, the British issued one order sink, the Bismarck, they mobilised practically every available ship to hunt down and sink it. And a lucky shot from a swordfish torpedo bomber manage to jam the rudder less than a couple hours outside of French ports, causing it to go into circles which allowed the task force to catch up with it and engage it. They actually did not succeed in sinking the Bismarck. But did a ton of damage; including multiple hits to the top deck , destruction of the bridge, and Impact hit and craters all along the ship topline, yet it still kept fighting to the bitter end, including multiple torpedo hits, and still remained afloat. So the beast of a battleship had to scuttle themselves to keep the ship as a war prize out of the British hands. The Tirpitz was later bombed by the dam busters using the mother of all bombs, ultimately, sinking it in the Norwegian fjords..

Welcome aboard, my friend! Seeing more people discover Sabaton (and through them, so much history) is epic.

Those little planes in the video are Swordfish, WWI-era planes used to deliver torpedoes. They actually had an advantage because the outdated planes moved too slowly for the Bismarck's guns to track without major adjustment. Still those pilots were so brave to take on the monster. One of their torpedoes struck one of the Bismarck's rudders, reducing its ability to maneuver so the fleet could catch up.

I've been watching all of your Dan Vasc videos, there are way too few people who has discovered him in my opinion so I've loved your reactions! But then I saw that you did a reaction of my absolute favourite band and I had to check it out. If you like epic storytelling of history, then Sabaton is the perfect match. A few suggestions for some more production heavy videos are "Seven Pillars of wisdom", "The Royal Guard" (There's also a version in swedish called "Livgardet" of the same song) and "Uprising". All of them kickass songs. If you want amazing story telling, watch "No Bullets Fly - Animated story video" and "Night Witches - Animated Story video".

The Bismarck took out The Hood in a fight, then fled. She was ultimately sunk mainly due to a Swordfish which landed a torpedo hit which damaged her rudder, meaning she could only turn around in circles. She still tried to flee home and still fought when she was encountered and still a dangerous foe - but she was caught & sunk before making it back home.

The History Channel show, Dogfights (which recreated aerial engagements throughout modern history) had an episode called High-Speed Chase for the Bismarck Battleship which documented the last stand of the ship. It's worth giving a looksee.

The fact that such outdated planes (The Swordfish) was the cause of Bismarck’s demise says a lot. The accuracy in the video was spot on! Not to mention the torpedo striking aft, causing her steering to be beyond repaired. It took grit for those pilots to push through the hailstorm of flak and machine guns. The best part is 0 Swordfish planes were shot down.

The Bismarck was commissioned in August 1940. She sailed along with Prinz Eugen for Operation Rheinuebung on 19 May 1941 for her first and only sortie. On 24 May 1941 at the Battle of the Denmark Strait she met and sunk the British Battlecruiser HMS Hood (aft magazine detonation and mentioned at start of video). On 26 May 1941, Swordfish from HMS Ark Royal (the carrier shown in the video) managed to score 2 torpedo hits on Bismarck, one of which was inconsequential and the other torpedo hit jammed the rudder at full port. As a result of the rudder jamming, the Bismarck was unable to run from the British. The night fighting shown in the video is a reference to the British destroyers that harassed the Bismarck through the night. On 27 May 1941, the British Battleships HMS King George V and HMS Rodney along with the Heavy Cruisers HMS Norfolk and HMS Dorsetshire engaged the Bismarck with the end result being the sinking of the Bismarck.

If you listen to the radio at the beginning it talks about the German battleship which suck The Might Battleship Hood. The Hood had a complement of officers and crew of 1418 men. When she went down only 3 survivors were pulled out of the water.

At the time, the Bismarck was the largest commissioned battleship. She (he?) was sunk in 1941. The Yamato was commissioned later that year and was even larger and more powerful

A fact about the abandoning of the Bismark: even the cat made it off. The cat became know as Unsinkable Sam as he had been on several ships that had been sunk or run aground. He ended up dyeing of old age in Belfast.

Extra History has two series, one for who the ship was named after and another about the ship. Both stories are quite epic, but you need to learn about the man to understand why they named their most powerful ship after him. Actually the Bismark's fate was sealed by a lucky shot he landed. With one hit he completely destroyed the British Battlecruiser Hood, the pride of the British Fleet. To save morale not just in the navy, but the entire country they had to sink the Bismark as fast as possible. They were after her from the start because of the danger she posed for the convois, but after the Hood? They sent everything they had. And I mean everything. Not just everything they had around the British Isles, but from Gibraltar they sent a carrier and even a battleship that was nearly in the US for some repairs turned back to hunt the Bismark. Also, if you check up on the story of the ship, and if the information is still up-to-date they didn't sink the Bismark. They turned it into a floating wreck. An expedition discovered the wreck and they didn't find a single hole in the inner armor belt. Which means the Bismark was scuttled by the crew. Remember that when you learn how they bombarded the ship.

Fun fact: the old guy with the compass at the beginning of the video is the actual grandson of the german sailor who the German captain gives the compass to during the sinking part

That torpedo hit from a bomber essentially doomed the Bismarck. The ship was on its way to an occupied French port to repair and resupply, where German air support would make attacking the Bismarck impossible. The torpedo hit damaged the rudder and made it so the Bismarck turned away from France and began to make circles, leaving it as a sitting duck for the British battle group that came to finish the task

The british home fleet caught up with the Bismark while on its way to a french port after being hit in its rudder and blew it to bits.

Heavily recommend "Attack of the Dead Men" and "Fields of Verdun". Also I dont know if you peeped it in the video,but the kid that survived the sinking of the Bismarck in the video was the captain of their boat.

Bismarck is one of the most legendary ships of the Second world war, as well as being the largest battleship in Europe and one of the largest in the world along with the Japanese Yamato and the American Missouri. Bismarck was launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940. Bismarck's first (and last) campaign began on may 22, 1941. Then Bismarck, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen (KMS Prinz Eugen) was to break through the Danish Strait into the Atlantic and begin to sink convoys going to Britain. The first German squadron was discovered by the British cruisers Suffolk and Norfolk (HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk) on the evening of 23 may. The British battleship Prince of Wales (HMS Prince of Wales) and the battlecruiser hood (HMS Hood) went to intercept Bismarck. During the battle, Bismarck received several hits, at the same time 5 Bismarck's volley hit directly into Hood's artillery cellars. Hood was torn in two by a massive explosion. Bismarck was chased by the entire British fleet in the region. Bismarck's injuries were not very serious, but they caused Bismarck to lose one of his main advantages - speed. The British lost Bismarck several times, but due to the fact that the British intercepted a radio message sent to Bismarck, it was possible to establish the approximate location of the ship. Bimarco left little to the French Brest. Also, when approaching the coast of occupied France, Bismarck could use Luftwaffe aircraft (Luftwaffe - aviation of the Third Reich) to cover. Only compound H, based in Gibraltar, was able to detain Bismarck. This unit included the aircraft carrier Ark Royal (HMS Ark Royal). On the morning of may 26, the Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers flew to the site of the last sighting of the Bimark. Approximately in the same area was the cruiser Sheffield (HMS Sheffield). The Swordfish pilots mistook Sheffield for Bismarck and torpedoed it. The new magnetic fuses of the torpedoes did not work, and the cruiser remained intact. After this incident, the British changed the magnetic fuses to contact ones. By evening, Sheffield had made visual contact with Bismarck and the Swordfish torpedoes were back in the air. Swadeshi was flying very low and slowly, because of this, the crews of Bismarck simply could not distinguish from the sea. The Suodfishes themselves were biplanes that were obsolete even before they were put into service. The British achieved two or three torpedo hits. The ship's cat Oscar, nicknamed "Unsinkable Sam"by the British, was also rescued from Bismarck.
