@ballyastrocade5672 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthintz9468 I think the reason they originally cut it (and shortened the bridge) was that it was recorded for a movie soundtrack ("Less Than Zero"), and the director wanted it kept fast and short to fit the opening title sequence, or something like that. As KeKway says, they do that verse when they perform it live. (I suspect the reason they never did a longer studio version is because since it *was* originally done for the movie, the distribution rights and royalties are probably tied up with the movie studio somehow. There's all kinds of contractural weirdness involved with film and TV scores, unfortunately. :-( )

This 1987 song was a return to the Bangles' sixties-revival roots. They had that popular mid-eighties period where they did songs written by Prince and stuff, songs like "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Manic Monday," but they started off in the early eighties as a sixties-revival band that one music writer described as a mix of the Yardbirds, the Mamas and the Papas, and "Revolver"-era Beatles, with great guitar work and harmonies. They even dressed in sixties styles, and they and other bands doing similar stuff inspired Prince's "Paisley Park" phase, which led to his support of them. This cover of a late sixties Simon and Garfunkel song brought their sixties-revival roots to the forefront again.

Paul Simon was a genius at painting a picture, telling a story with his lyrics. I reflect back to a song he wrote in the late 60s' called "Old Friends" and how perceptive he was when he was essentially still a kid, about psychological impact of growing old. I was in my late teens then but now find myself the subject of that song. "...how terribly strange to be seventy." If YOU listen to that song now, when you become 70 you too will reflect back to the time and age that you are now. I believe the song was released on their album 'Bookends', Simon and Garfunkel. I do enjoy your channel here! Good job!

And can we take a minute just to recognise what AMAZING women we had kicking a$$ in the 80s?! Susanna Hoffs is a goddess (check out her cover of "The Look of Love" from the Austin Powers soundtrack btw!!!), the whole band KILLS IT, and even Jami Gertz was that kind of "hot tough." As soon as I saw you start the track, i cranked up my volume to max and put on my headphones, and after 30 years, this track still packs a massive punch... Paul Simon song recorded by him and Garfunkel in a more mellow style back in 1966. This rockin' Bangles' version was used in the Robert Downey Jr. film from the '80s about young, wealthy drug addicts called ""Less Than Zero." Check out the Bangles' "If She Knew What She Wants" (which was their follow-up to "Manic Monday"). It's more in the style you would expect.

It's always a good sign when the original artist approves of your remake. Paul Simon liked this version.

This is their best song in my opinion. Written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel. Love the lower alto voices of the 2 sisters. Thanks Jovaughn. Please do DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS by Band Aid 1, 1984. Charity song involving many popular artists eg. Boy George, Sting, Bono, George Michael, Paul Young, Phil Collins on drums. Written by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure from Ultravox. Many thanks x

J, you should try Joan Jett and the Blackhearts “I love rock and roll” or “do you wanna touch me” and Pat Benetar “Love is a Battlefield” or “Hit me with your best shot”

(As folks have noted) this is a Simon & Garfunkel cover. Please also check their "Where Were You When i Needed You" which is a Grass Roots cover. Preferably the studio version.

They were one of a handful of underground early 80s L.A. bands who were nicknamed the Paisley Underground because they had a psychedelic flavor to their music. They were the only ones to hit it big except for David Robeck, who went on to lead Mazzy Star later in the 80s.

"Be With You," "Hero Takes A Fall" and "If She Knew What She Wants" are more great singles by the group. And they have some excellent album cuts, like "Let It Go," "Glitter Years," "Something To Believe In," and "Dover Beach."
